Albion blog: Losing the faith

Tuesday 24th February 2009, 9:10AM GMT.

FULHAM ALBION 22 DHAlbion blogger Jarrod Hill can find nothing positive to take from the Baggies’ horror show at Fulham.

I don’t know about taking the players on a sunshine break, I think they should all chip in for us the fans to have a holiday after their horror show on Sunday at Fulham.

No passion, no fight and a distinct lack of any evidence we had a game plan to get a result.

If I am honest, I have resolved myself to the fact we are going down and it is hard to take. On a number of occasions this season we have flattered to deceive, but the recent performances have been awful.

I have tried conning myself into thinking when we have Jonas Olsson and Jonathan Greening back in the side we can win enough games to survive.

But, if I am honest, we just have too many players who have had to play this season who just are not good enough for the Premier League. A lack of talent I can almost endure, but a sheer lack of fight and effort I cannot.

I sat and watched the game and could not believe manager Tony Mowbray had had them together for two weeks. There was no shape, no urgency, no passion and I had been saying all week I expected them to be fired up to the max.

At the end of last season, most fans were saying we needed to address the lack of balance in the squad, footballers we had in abundance, fighters when things got tough we did not.

Mowbray himself highlighted it as an area which required attention, yet the only midfielder we have signed that is described as defensive in Youssouf Mulumbu was signed half way through the season and we are still yet to see him.

The manager has described him as more of an underbelly squad player, but on Sunday’s display we need him now.

I would take some of our players to one side and tell them to strap a pair on!

You do not have to be 6ft plus to be able to put a tackle in, but Danny Murphy was brushing our midfielders aside on Sunday.

I cant even be bothered pointing out the non performance of certain players, but I sat there flabbergasted when a long punt from defence was watched by our defender Leon Barnett as it sailed over his head and bang we were 2-0 down. Our best player on the day was our woodwork!

I just hope the manager and players can prove me wrong, but my gut feeling is that we are going to be relegated. It wasn’t the result that has placed me in this dark place, it was the performance.

As you all know I am usually pessimistic, yet this season I have held genuine hope that we could stay up and have a good season, but the last two games have completely drained any positive feelings I had.

There are still enough games left to turn things around, but we need to adopt a more resilient approach if we are to get results.

We desperately need some steel to go with our creativity, but do we have players of that ilk available, if we do not then you have got to lay the blame firmly at Mowbray’s door.

I keep saying I like the man and I buy in to the way he wants his team to play, but has he been somewhat naive in thinking we could play that way and stay up in our first season?

Even Arsenal are struggling to do it this season with vastly more resources at hand than we have.

Sorry to be so negative but I am completely out of anything positive to say, I will try and find something for Friday’s blog – but don’t hold your breath.

hi jarrod,,your right in saying there was no passion or fight in sundays game, and this is what hurts most.
we all knew it was going to be a learning curv for mowbray this year but its not happening quick enough is it,,why does he take so long in games we are losing and hes tactics were all wrong to start with to realise and do something about it,last five minutes isnt good enough,,then theres players who alot of fans rate and they cant even get a sniff,ie.cech, dorrans, mulumbu ,pele, donk ,why buy these players to keep the bench warm…i know injuries have played abig part this season and maybe without them we would of done better,,but the ones that are picked each week have to show some passion and fight cos sunday was unforgivable…lets see if things change for the everton game,i doubt it but heres praying you never know…….LEARNING THE HARD WAY,,OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YES..

I too have resigned myself to the probabillity of relegation, we are little worse off than we were two weeks ago in terms of the teams around us, but the gross ineptitude of the Newcastle display, followed by the gross dereliction of effort during the Fulham display leave me wondering where the next point is coming from.

There seems to be a division among the fans regarding TM, those (and their numbers are growing) who want him out,
and those who want him to stay, in spite of what is looking increasingly like a failed campaign.
I am firmly entrenched in the latter, i think no long term good can come from Mowbrays culling at this junture, i do however want him to learn a damn sight quicker from his mistakes.
When a system/plan is not working…….do not persist with it.
Drop/substitute players……whom it appears to us fans are bomb proof.

Good summary, Jarrod. You’ve put into words most of the black thoughts that have been bubbling in my brain since Sunday. One adition I’d like to make is that, to my mind, we are not playing football the Mowbray way;we are not doing what it said on the can;the principles have been compromised. Last season, and earlier this(remeber the frequent comments that we had outplayed the opposition even though we had lost?), we played possession football with slick passing that took the ball swiftly to the opponent’s danger area. Now we play laboured possession football in our own half, make sure we all get a touch, pass backwards more often than a rugby team – and seem to think that’s The Mowbray Way. All it does is allow the defenders to get back, have a snooze, get their hair cut , get into position and repel our so-called attack. Then (and we have seen this so often this season you would think we’d be able to copy it by now), they pass the ball quickly upfield through the spaces generously provided, and sometimes score, or in the case of Fulham, hit the goal frame. It’s my belief that we’ve no defensive midfielders – but we’ve no attacking midfielders either.
And WBAforever – our next points are coming in The Championship!

Why is everybody in the Black Country so negative. Wolves are top but its still not good enough and only 2/3 wins and Albion will be ok.

“my gut feeling is that we are going to be relegated. It wasn’t the result … it was the performance”

Both sentences that I, and I’m sure many more Baggies fans said since Sunday afternoon.

I got Sky HD on Saturday but resisted watching any of Saturdays matches so that the Albion could Christen it for me.

    Thanks for that lads!

It’s the first time this season that I’ve thought we’ll go down.

    We’re 3 points (realistically 4) behind Stoke and a further 3 behind 15th.
That’s 2 wins and a draw more than Portsmouth, Newcastle or Spurs needed – as I can’t see Blackburn staying where they are with Santa Cruz deciding that he suddenly DOES want to play for them).

    Tex.

Someone give him a new map – the one he’s got at the moment seems to be full of blind-alleys and cul-de-sacs.

Jay Simpson was (IMO) the worst player on the pitch – Bednar should have come on earlier.

On the brightside – I always like to try to find one – Mesenguez looked useful, and we’re not Dingles! (Cardiff go top if they win their games in hand!!)

Yes Mowbray must take the blame for the lack of balance in the team, but when the chairman wont pay premiership wages, you wont get premiership players in.

If we can just get a result against a depleted everton on saturday even a draw to take into the arsenal game things could look so diffrent, cuz theres no doubt after the west ham game we have 5 winnable games we just need the players to find some fight and belief from somwhere and i think the only way to do that is to make changes,if tony mowbray persist in playing players that keep letting him down then like so many before him he will be the master of his own downfall, but as i say one result can change everything, aye boing boing weev done it before and we,ll do it agen

I’m glad you can see the positive side for us however I’m afraid I cannot share your optimism.
I do hope Wolves are promoted but knowing that my club will be going the other way makes it a lot harder to swallow. I’ll be honest and let you all know that I turned the TV off when the first goal went in and didn’t look back either. I was completely disgusted by the performance and for the first time in many many years I felt angry because of a WBA performance.

I’m not even sure if I will care to follow them now for the rest of the season, call me fickle but you know what…I’m fed up.
I won’t slate Mowbray in any way shape or form because I guarantee that if he were on the pitch he would have given it his all. It seemed at times that Fulham had 22 men on the pitch, EVERY-freakin-TIME we got the ball they were looming over us and what did we do???
We simply ran into them lost the ball and had the woodwork clattered again. For the first time in many games I felt sorry for Carson, he had no support and as for the attacking options the only player to try on Sunday was Fortune.
Should fans blame this on the absence of Greening come the end of the season when we have a fat R next to our name, then i am sorry but close your traps, their paid enough money to cope with such a loss and they don’t need their hands held. I certainly won’t be engaging in any banter with rival fans for the next season because you know what…we have NOTHING to come back with, no excuses. We have been pathetic.

I was disgusted by Sunday’s display but not half as much as some of the reactions on here. Although some of you never called him Merlin Mowbray, why not go the whole hog now and call him Muppet Mowbray. I used to be proud of Baggies fans on here because they were so unlike the mob from down the road. I hadn’t realised that this was because we were doing okay at the time and we have just as many two faced ‘supporters?’ as the Wolves.
I bet Man Utd are so glad they got rid of Ferguson when they were struggling at the start of his reign or again a couple of seasons ago when they had a fallow period. Now you won’t find a glory hunter who will admit to wanting him out.

The match against Fulham was a disgraceful performance. I have lost it with TM for some time now sadly—he’s a well meaning sort of bloke but BUT I support Albion and he has lost the dressing room because he continues to pick wrong players and put players in the wrong position. Koren is a central midfielder Morro is a wide one Valero is a joke and must not be picked again and what have Cech and Pele done to deserve not being picked. What has happened to Zuvy—in his first games for us he was great now he looks lost Also what does Grant do? Since he came we have got worse and worse and what about our fitness guru —more injuries than ever before. Bring in Curbs.

    Jarrod,
Any Albion fan will agree with your points. I don’t get the stick Peace is taking in some quarters though! Mowbray has spent a lot of money and none of it has gone on experience. All of his signings have been in and out and as you say there is absolutely no steel in the team (Robinson excepted but he is all steel and no ability). I applaud what Mowbray wants to do but as others have stated here, if it is not working change it. What difference would a Carsley or Nicky Butt have made to us. Our back four look rubbish because the midfield don’t know how to defend and the strikers are not scoring because the midfielders move the ball so slowly we are easy to defend against. We buy Valero for a record fee and then instead of playing him in an advanced position where he impressed for Mallorca we ask him to pick the ball up deep and then critise him for not being effective. One other point, we seem to have gone downhill since Grant arrived. He failed at Norwich so why did we take him on. I agree though we do appear doomed as Mowbray seems to have given up trying to win away games.

It’s not looking good, in fact it’s looking pretty terrible. In saying that, we still have plenty of winnable games left, and most of those being at home, if we can emmulate the atmosphere of boro and spurs at home, who knows, we can certainly beat sunderland, bolton, wigan and stoke! and I’m pretty sure that will keep us up if i’m honest.

I’m not defending mowbray, he has been naive this year, and we have to understand that he has to defend is players in post match conferences, i was appalled sunday, but we still need to stick by the bloke, at the end of the day, our youth team beat liverpools last week 4 – 0 and i think that has to be the influence of mowbray!

if we do go down, he is the man to bring us back up….

Please Tony, tell the players the truth, THEY WERE EMBARRASING, not only to us the fans but to themselves, you have to lay most of the blame at the managers door as he picks the players and tactics and tells them how to play, but the players are the ones on the pitch not mowbray.
Blaming Carson is unfair, a goalkeeper is only as good as his defense and if that is crap what else can you expect him to do, I for one cant fault him for being bloody nervous everytime he gets between the posts and sees the 4 muppets in front of him. Defence too needs protection from the midfield, its job is to both aid defence and attack, if it is as bad as ours then we can do neither, so we will keep losing every week until Tony accepts that it needs sorting and pretty sharpish.

We all have off days and unfortuneatley all 10 outfield players had one at the same time. So lets stop doing what the dingle fans do best down at the custard bowl and demand that we sell/sack everyone. The main problem I feel is that Mr Peace will not spend any money I think he is preparing for the Championship. Tony was promised £7 million to buy Thompson & meet Trejvo(sorry if spelt wrong)buy out clause, so what has happened to that money? My personal opinion is if we sack Tony who is going to want to come and take over, probably some Premiership has-been or an up and coming nobody. When will the penny drop?
Without exception, week-on-week, i witness our defence allowing the opposition the time to look-up and put the ball into our box. This ultimately results in a goal against or us having to witness the numerous comedy-like actions to get rid of the ball.
Some of these actions would not look out of place with the clowns in Billy Smarts Circus!!!!
Sunday’s match was no exception and its making me wonder what is happening (or not happening) to address this?
    Come on TM.
Forget the thought of us ‘playing’ ourselves out of this situation – we do not have the ability – and get back to basics.
You and your backroom staff have enough defensive experience between you to educate our players.
Do the ugly things like close-down quickly, put the foot-in, put that tackle in etc, to try and ensure we get the required results.
    Surely its not that difficult.

Remarkably, ALL is not lost as there are enough points still to be had to keep us in this division.
Then next season we may be able to recruit better players and play the attractive football that you want and which we supporters would ideally want to see.

p.s. I was also troubled by the apparent lack of concern by the staff/bench towards the end of the game on Sunday. WBA 2-0 down, TV pans-in and time to laugh.
    What was all that about????

Average price £20 per ticket makes it £200 k per home match. Fans are rightly expressing their disappointment, personlly I found Sunday an embarrassment. We are all looking for scapegoats, TM, the coaches, JP but really we all have the same reasons to be upset. I am sure that we all believed that this season would be different. Think of the players who represented us in the Prem in the past. I would not like to name them but we all know who the are. We looked at the squad and thought that with a few additions they would be good enough. JP came up with a few bob and if TM could unearth a few more Koren`s then all would be well. Sadly we have signed players for a lot of money by our standards who are just not good enough, Moore, Valero Beattie, Kim etc. TM says judge him on his team and yet the only “automatics” in my team would be Robbo(for all his faults) and Greening, neither bought by TM. We are all expressing our collective disappointments in different ways but really all we require is a bit of fight and commitment and then if we ain`t good enough, so be it.

I’ve said it before so here goes again.
We need a manager who shows PASSION and who gets players in who have PASSION. Players who will run themselves into the ground for the team and fans.
The problem is, any player who displays a bit of passion and/or stands up to TM gets transferred out or left in the reserves.
Our TM doesn’t like players who have an opinion and/or stand up to him otherwise there would be more passionate committed displays from the players and, very important for me, a passionate CAPTAIN on the field who motivates and directs the players.
JP doesn’t like managers who stand up to him so Mego Pearson and Robbo – like them or not, have gone and we have Mr. Placid, don’t rock the boat TM.
Note past comments. He TM- can get angry with us. My words – but we aren’t frightened of him and we do our own thing!
    Right or wrong????

Bully et al., you know I’m in the “TM IN” camp too, so do stick around.

Sure, we may be going down, but we will be back, sooner in my view, WITH TM at the helm.

Realsim says it’s time we stopped flogging ourselves too much, and instead, injected a little gallows humour.

So, next time you watch Albion, do it the Fulham way …

I presume you are referring to me. If you read what I said you will find that I merely alluded to the fact that early in his career many of the airheaded Man Ure fans were calling for Fergies head. I did not say TM is the new Sir Alex, just that if we sack him we will never know will we? Just like Man U could have listened to the knee jerk brigade and sacked him. Understand?

Well, I feel better after my explosion on a previous post. At least there are those who want TM to stay, regardless. And I’m with them. Totally. I do have a little worm eating into my brain though. Many moons ago I used to take a very keen interest in boxing. Boxers went away from temptation to train, out in the woods usually. The best trainers always made sure they ‘peaked’ for the fight and DIDN’T OVERTRAIN. What I saw on Sunday gave me the impression of stiff limbs, in other words, they froze. The timing goes, the flexibility with it, the quick reaction time out of the window. That isn’t so obvious with the goalkeeper so he was fine. It’s my suggestion to help because you all know we can, and have, played much better than that. They looked and were jaded. Are they therefore superfit or super-stiffed? (I did want to use a different word but E&S give us a good bit of leeway).

Jarrod, i don’t think i’ve ever read anything on these pages before and thought my god, did i write this? absolutely every key of that was exactly what ive been saying since sundays non-performance! 100% spot on mate!

I’m not going to join the TM out brigade, what on earth will sacking him achieve anyway? However, i dont blindly support him no matter what either, some of his decisions baffle me (no, make that infuriate me!). Why no Cech? Why does he persist with the useless Valero? Why drop Pele who came in from the cold and did very well? Why hasn’t he given more chances to Dorrens, who looks no worse than several regulars who seemingly are guaranteed a 1st team shirt?

The way i see it we have nothing to lose now, the players owe us for the last 2 non-performances, so should show some pride and fight and TM should send out a team to have a right good go at the opposition from the off regardless of who they are! Attack!

we’ve become predictable 2 most teams, we can’t break through the big defensive teams because there isn’t enough pace our power in midfield.we play like a spanish team but without the right players, we dont get enough men in the box when you’ve got chris brunt on the pitch. and our defensive play all round is woeful and embarrasing. marek cech should be playing wenever he’s played his creative steams forward and he was a regular at porto till he got injured so he’s obviously talented, even play him on the left wing. still 2 b positive we still have a chance, just hope we can get greening and olson and the new signings keep us up.

Agree with everything, didnt see the game Sunday only really listend to a little on the radio when i was took off injured in my own game, what i heard was pathetic and the lack of fight is down to the fact we have little european players ie Valero who havent experienced a relegation battle in the prem before and therefore will cost us this season, i said at the start we needed to bring in players like James Beattie (who for the knockers at the start of the season, HE IS SCORING). also stated we needed a Boateng sort of player in our midfield, Mulumbu may not be exactly the same player but at least give the lad a go.

TM has said on many occassions he works for the Football Technical Director who handles all transfer activity. I understand the Technical Director was promoted from Youth Team Coach. You have to question his experience for such a role at this level or was he promoted because he is a ‘yes’ man to the Chairman? TM is taking all the critism for the players brought into the club, but what I would like to know if they were TM’s choice or the Technical Directors ?

Unfortunately the Chairman has made sure he now owns the club lock stock & barrel( & it didn’t take him long to put it up for sale again once he had eliminated many of the remaining shareholders). This season has been a disaster with both supporters & players having given up. Just look at the lack of fight in the last two games. How different from the ‘Great Escape’ season. A review of club policy & ‘what went wrong’ needs to be carried out at the end of the season, relegation or otherwise. All parties including remaining shareholders & supporters should be involved & the conclusions & recommendations made available to supporters. It wont happen, when did you last hear anything from the Chairman?

Well all i can say is way to go jarrod hit the nail on the head there mate.. I must add tho Sunday i watched the game an I got really angry watching the lack of inner fire from our players! start of this season we played really good football passing quick testing Arsenal?.. apart from the few mistakes by Leon Barnett.. i dunno about you but why do they play him he is the biggest culprit to our losing silly goals this season which results in a big fat 0 on the points board. Where we have been ontop winning the games then oops he’s f*cked up again.. Everytime that ball gets played in his direction i grit my teeth and cower!.. why can’t he put cech in the middle… atleast he’ll get a game cause if i recall earlier on in the season he did this!… and he worked well!.. Plus Pele has put in strong performances over Barnett why drop him now for that cock sausage… Ok rant over..

Just one more thing Keep the faith in our Manager & Pray for a new Owner !!

What a difference 12 months make? Mowbray was the best thing since Cyrille pulled on the No 9 shirt, and now he is no longer fit for office.
Mistakes yes, naievity yes, punching above our weight yes, worth the sack NO!
We have a chairman who doesnot want to invest the money that other clubs do, and expects the manager to cope with that scenario. TM knew the brief when he took over.
Valero has yet to prove he has what it takes, and yes he cost a packet. But Koren didnt, Tex didnt. Not everyone you sign will be world beater. I am sure that Valero will come good, he probably needs a confident team around him, just like alot of the others!!
I was at Fulham, and i too was embarrased at our performance. But the fat lady is only warming up. I posted pre season that a championship manager told me that TM had 10 million budget, wages inc. I laughed thinking it was a wind up. I am not laughing now.
I still believe TM is the man, and if we do get the R we will bounce back.
I think we would struggle to attract another manager better than what we have. JP has a reputation to uphold!!

Get marek cech in he was brilliant when he was picked and was star man.
Nearly ever goal we let in comes from robinsons left side of the park
we need to get rid of valero robinson barnett put in mulumblu cech and get metie and olsson

I am still in shock over the Fulham performance to be honest, i’d be ashamed if my sunday league side played that bad and the 5 or 6 people that watch us would be turning away in disgust and embarressment, just as i did watching the albion on sunday.

Since the opening day at the emirates a couple have things have baffled me:

1.why marek cech can’t get into the team, either in the midfield or preferably left back

2.why mr mowbray cannot admit his mistakes

3.why we never invested in strikers in the summer, or ever got rid of our best striker

i am not saying with cech playing on sunday we would have beaten fulham, but i think back to errors and just general lack of quality of mowbrays bit on the side at left back, and think would a player of cech’s quality have made those errors? and perhaps games such as wigan would have gained us a few extra points

i also think back to the game cech actually featured in, his man of the match display, defending confidently and being a great outlet down the left, a lot better outlet that our number 3

i understand mowbray wants to play the right way, and i admire that, but there is playing the right way, and playing the way that will win you games in the division you are in, and i’m sorry, but as the january window approached, it was clear to see the way mowbray had us playing was taking us down, so why not invest in a lot of steal? we signed a “one for the future” and thats it! i just don’t understand

as for the firepower, although jay was utter tripe on sunday, i think him and fortune have the potential to be a great partnership, but i cannot see why strikers were not signed in the summer, mowbray spent over 20million in the summer if i remember rightly, and did not sign the thing we needed most, a goalscorer

i am sorry for the essay, but i am a wound up baggie
