We can still be champions – McCarthy

Monday 23rd February 2009, 10:11AM GMT.

WOLVES V CARDIFF 19 EB 22Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has smashed club protocol by declaring his side can win the Championship title.

The manager insisted for the first time in public after the 2-2 draw against Cardiff that the Championship leaders can finish top of the pile.

McCarthy’s confident statement goes against the board’s pre-season ban on the ‘P’ word designed to quell expectations.

Despite winning just one of their last 10 games, the draw extended Wolves’ lead by a point to four ahead of second-placed Birmingham and five clear of Reading with 12 matches left, after they both lost on Saturday to Coventry and Bristol City respectively.

McCarthy is convinced that if players and fans share the belief, the title and Premier League football will be coming to Molineux.

He said: “We want to win the league and I still believe we can. If we have a collective belief, we can do it.  We need that belief from everyone, and not anticipation of some sort of disaster.”

Wolves have now taken the lead in six of their last 10 games and failed to win.

Against Cardiff, Syvlan Ebanks-Blake put the hosts in front after 11 minutes before Michael Chopra (31) and Roger Johnson (48) struck for the Bluebirds.

But Wolves snatched a point nine minutes from time, after goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos fumbled Kyel Reid’s cross over the line.

McCarthy paid tribute to his team’s spirit.

He said: “I love the attitude of the players because it’s never-say-die. It proves the spirit and desire is there.

“They had the stuffing knocked out of them by that second goal and came back to get a point.  We always seem to be playing uphill – giving a goal away and having to come back into it.”

McCarthy is assessing the fitness of Matt Jarvis (knee) and Stephen Ward, the latter after he came off with what appeared to be a leg injury.

Either he’s stating the flippin obvious….we are top of the table and if we win every remaining game, we will be likely to stay there….or he is making a comment based on recent form…which is barmy!

A Championship winning team shouldn’t have to keep coming back from behind because they wouldn’t often go behind in the first place.

Secondly, we huffed and puffed in the second half and created absolutely nothing! It also says something that when we were gifted a goal and should have gone for the jugular in the last 8 minutes, it was Cardiff who pushed forward for the winner!

Yes…in the light of other results, it wasn’t a disaster but it’s a bit rich talking of finishing first when the form guide puts you 17th and you consider a lucky home draw as evidence that you be champions.

The truth is that if things don’t change drastically and by some miracle we do scrape top position, we’ll be one of the poorest sides ever to achieve that feat!

Are we ever going to achieve a clean sheet? Looks remote at the moment, mind you we held on to the lead for 20 minutes yesterday so we are getting closer!! Reading have four very easy games coming up starting at home to Forest on Saturday. So we are going to have to get our act together and win a game even if its 1-0 off three players’ backsides!!

I thought 1st 25 minutes were excellent, as every game goes on though we always struggle in the middle of midfield. This team was crying out for a quality mid midfield man and for some unknown reason the board or McCarthy failed to act. It could have been the best money they ever spent. If I had been Morgan I would have insisted Mick spent some money in the 1st week of Jan. However, 1 point better off than Saturday morning. Get behind the team when they are playing or stay away from Molineux.

Is any team in the division in a position like Man Utd, heads and shoulders above the rest? No. So you need to have realistic expectations. We have the opportunity IF we believe to win this title and gain promotion. It is now about everyone pulling together. IF ALL Wolves Players n Fans pull together for 12 remaining games – we will win. Can we agree to put off any negative thoughts, gestures and comments?

Roger Johnson unmarked header for their second. Why does Vokes get 1 full game up front & Keogh is straight back in! Henry is awful just because he is captain doesn’t mean he can’t be dropped!!! Why not give Gleeson a go – MM will not use our youth system! It was handed on plate too us this weekend with Reading, Blues & Preston losing and we still can’t take advantage! Going up as champions. MM will live or be sacked by that statement if we dont go up at all. He says he bans the P word but goes and says the C word. If you pardon the pun. But on a serious note we need to keep a clean sheet otherwise we wont be winning many matches between now and end of season. Vast improvement yesterday. First 25mins we were in total control and on another day could have been 3-0 up before they equalised. Once they did, as Dave Jones said, you could feel the tension building on and off the pitch. Henry had a dreadful game (he will bounce back I’m sure), which meant that Cardiff took control of the midfield and looked fairly comfortable at 2-1. In the end we got out of jail thanks to their keeper. SEB ran his socks off, Keogh played well in the 1st half (ok blazed one over from 10yds but unlucky when he hit the post)Jody looked solid & Berra got better as the game went on. Much of the same as we were for the first 25mins against Plymouth on sat should see us alright.

Stephen Ward played ok on Sunday, with the 1st goal he was unlucky the ball didn’t go out of play, more importantly who was marking Chopra! The 2nd goal was lack of marking by I think Mr Berra.

My main concern was with the central midfield’s lack of protection to the back four, this to me is where most of the problems lie and where MM needs to concentrate sorting out. He also needs to work on Kightly staying out on the wing and not coming into the middle so often.

In the space of 60 seconds we saw what is still wrong- Keogh misses a sitter then they go up our end and attack a lad who despite the 100% effort never was and never will be a left back that can defend as is needed, and the ball is in our net.

If MM was brave enough to start with Fanny Craddock in the middle he should have exercised the luxury of including Stearman at left back.At least he is a natural defender,

Get some perspective on the current situation:

We’re top….not third, or our usual seventh. We’re top, folks.

This division is damn hard to get out of, let alone win. We should know, we’ve tried for enough years.

The squad IS strong enough to win the league. Have any of you constant moaners ever considered what effect these comment pages have on the players? All this rubbish about how they don’t deserve a few days in the sun, etc….
It wasn’t a holiday. Get over it.

Next – why do Wolves fans always (and I repeat ALWAYS) assume we will go out and win at a a canter? The opposing eleven players just might have other ideas. It is the height of blinkered arrogance to expect our team to stroll to victory. Apart from the odd game (and I accept Burnley was rubbish) the lads have worked bloody hard. When they’ve lost, it might be because the other team played better than we did. Think about that for a minute..

I repeat, we’re top. We’re doing OK. The best way to ensure premiership football and a title to add to the club honours is to GET BEHIND THE TEAM. Let’s support them, not slag them off.

I want Wolves in the premiership so much it hurts (my first match was in 1976 so I don’t have to justify anything I write here) and I believe these lads can do it. They have my complete support. If any of them read this, please ignore the mindless idiots and keep going.

What Mad Mick keeps doing is starting with Keogh, (he’s determined to make a point to the fans), then with barely anytime left in the game, after realizing that Keogh is crap, he brings on Vokes with too little time to make any difference. Another example is the fact that the fans have been complaining about Henry and Quasie in central midfield, so guess what? Our stubborn prat of a manager will start them everytime. What we need to do now, fellow fans is call for the team Mick wants, then, and only then will we get the team we really need. So come on people, start blogging for Collins, Keogh, Quasie and Henry to start every game. Using the fans as a reason for poor performance and results is the oldest excuse in the book and very easy to do – Personally, If the players were busy doing the business – Would they care about isolated comments?

You’re so smug and convinced you’re right that you cannot accept that we all have different opinions on Wolves. That difference applies to everything in life, too, so get used to the idea and grow up, will you? Football’s NOT an exact science, ffs. Still, if nothing else, the childish comments reveal the juvenile age of the poster, and I’d rather talk to adults, thanks.

I agree with The Usual Suspects in questioning whether we have MEN or MICE at this club. We keep being reminded that they’re a young team, but this is a tough world, and we can’t afford namby pambies. If they’re “man” enough to play for Wolves, pick up their fat salaries, drive fancy cars and be generally pampered by the club, then fans -their paymasters, don’t forget- have every right to express their views.

The Usual Suspects also mirrors my view in that the players and management have a ready-made, convenient ‘excuse’ where the fans are concerned. Blaming the fans for the club’s woeful record of failure for the past 25 years has become the norm, it seems. Certainly, McCarthy’s arrogance and outspoken comments since he arrived -though understandable to a degree, in fairness- are imflammatory and hardly cohesive despite his assertion that “we all need to pull together”. Your words and actions are contradictory in the extreme, Mick. All you’ve achieved is to divide the fanbase even further. Still, that’s to be expected from a man who sees himself as the first Molineux manager to be fireproof.

I wish I’d had the good fortune and ability to play for Wolves -we all would. Pulling on that Gold shirt is an honour that should not be taken lightly. Maybe seeing Bully wear it with such distinction (and many other greats before him) spoilt me because now I expect all that follow to emulate his lead. That man NEVER knew a lost cause, NEVER accepted defeat and NEVER gave less than 100%. He never made excuses, either. He earned his money -all that I demand is that our present lot do the same. That’s not a lot to ask but, if they’re not up to it, make way for those who are. Players are merely tools to do a job and selfishly mercenary in nature, so let’s not get TOO protective of the little dears. They’re employees, not demigods.

Post 55: Well said. Glad to see you standing your ground and making your point. As a paying fan of only 40+ years, I’m but a mere whippersnapper in comparison. ;-)

    67. If you hate the Wolves as much as you make out and you must hate us as you have never got a good word to say about us, the drivel you write in ALOB and on here is proof of that, It’s almost as if you don’t want us to do well or go up and you’re only happy if we fail so you’ve got something to whinge about, after all Jiwal stands for John Ireland Whinge Alot, so why don’t you do us and yourself a favour if you ain’t got anything good to say don’t say anything.
