Goal was my fault admits Berra

cardiff21Wolves defender Christophe Berra held his hands up for Cardiff’s second goal in the 2-2 draw at Molineux.

Making his home debut, the £2.3million January signing from Hearts lost scorer Roger Johnson, who flashed a bullet header past goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey to give the Bluebirds a 2-1 lead from Paul Parry’s 48th minute corner.

But he still walked away with a bottle of champagne, with his performance was enough to win him the sponsors’ man of the match award.

Berra said: “I was pleased with my overall performance, but the second goal came from the guy I was supposed to be marking and I was disappointed.

“The guy just got away from me a bit.  As a defender, you don’t want to lose goals but I’ll go back and look at it. I’ll speak to the manager to see how I can improve on it for the future.

“Mistakes happen to every player – even the top players in the world. But they’re always learning how to get better.

“I have to keep working hard at my game, and, as centre halves usually don’t hit their peak until they’re in their late 20s, I’ve still got a lot of things to learn.

“I’ll still make mistakes in the future but I’ll also do good things and it’s just important I learn from them.”

Substitute Kyel Reid, whose cross was fumbled home by keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos for Wolves’ 81st minute equaliser on his Cardiff debut, sympathised with Stephen Ward in the build-up to the Bluebirds’ first goal, scored by Michael Chopra on 31 minutes.

He said: “I thought we were a bit unlucky with their first goal, because it was a great block from Ward and the ball came back to him (Parry) to cross.”

Berra expressed his relief that Wolves managed to emerge with a draw to extend their lead at the top of the Championship to four points, after a superb first half-hour when the team looked back to their best.

He said: “I’m just glad we drew 2-2, but especially after that first half performance. We were impressed with that and we created a lot of chances.

“We took the game to Cardiff and we have to take the positives from it.  It was a great fightback and especially with Birmingham and Reading dropping points, it’s a point gained over them.”

Berra is confident Wolves can clinch promotion if they can reproduce football their first half display.

He said: “Cardiff are flying in the Championship and we’ve had a dip in form, but everything is still to play for and I’m sure if we keep on playing like we did – especially the first half – we’ll definitely gain more points than we lose.”
