Fulham 2 Albion 0 – verdict
Sunday 22nd February 2009, 3:54PM GMT.
Albion were comprehensively beaten by a rampant Fulham at Craven Cottage.
The home side had already rattled the woodwork three times before Bobby Zamora opened the scoring on the hour.
The Baggies found themselves further on the back foot when Zamora’s saved effort was followed up by Andrew Johnson for the second.
It really wasn’t Albion’s day, compounded when sub Roman Bednar had a penalty saved late on.
He had won the spot-kick after a challenge by Brede Hangeland in the penalty area.

Championship here we come !!! What a disgrace in every department, clueless, shambles etc…Time for a change im sorry to say, but we are getting worse in every game

What made me sick was watching our so called manager and the bench laughing between themselves after Bednar missed penalty !!! Joke

At least us baggie fans don’t have to worry when the season’s all over about our players being sold to fellow premiership clubs.

Montone Mowbray – Pack your bags !!! you have proved now you cannot manage in the Premier League, this team needs a MOTIVATOR and you clearly ain’t that man. Listening to you on Sky you are clearly not on this planet.Fulham were up for it why was’nt we,tired from sunning it in Spain ?? – Joke.

We are going down, 2 poor performances on the run and no plan B from Mowbray, we will never achieve with Mowbray playing a yes man to Peace’s scrooge!
Enough is enough. Total garbage, worst performance of the season. Taxi for Mowbray!
It was very disapointing to watch an Albion team who are fighting for their premiership survival, show a total lack of spirit or fight. It has been obvious all season that we lack quality in certain areas of the squad, but to roll over and die in a game of such importance is difficult to take. If that is the level of performance we can expect in the remaining games this season then we will be playing championship football yet again. I love the flowing football going forward at times under Tony Mowbray, but some lessons can be taken from Gary megson in instilling a fighting spirit and a desire to fight for every ball and commit to every challenge. It does not take quality to match your opponents in work ethic and desire, just motivation, and that is what was lacking today.

A POOR SHOW FROM THE BAGGIES,OH WELL WE WILL AT LEAST WIN A FEW GAMES IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT SEASON WHEN WE PLAY WOLVES AND BLUES.I’M OF TO DROWN MY SORROWS WITH A PINT.

A few optimists thought we might add to our one
solitary away win but yet again our pussy cat
midfield failed to protect our suspect defence.
How many times have we said that ? TM what did you
see in valero ? he has had more than enough time to show it. TM says he dosent watch MOD he would
learn that what the pundits are saying is what the
fans are thinking midfield too lightweight and
trying to do a job theyre incapable of Lets see
Dorrans and Robinson in midfield Cech at left back back.TMs dilemma drop his record buy ?
Shocking performance again! Is TM the right man for the job?… I’m begining to have my doubts! Yet again, defending like a sunday league side, with a midfield which was clueless! We desperately need back Ollson and Greening, but honestly believe we’re down now!

Absolutely disgusting display no fight no nothing.Too much talking,They shouldn;t be paid today,i feel very sorry for all the people who have got season tickets and who made the journey to day.Nothings was done in the transfer window about the defence.Mowbury seems fire proof, and totaly out of his depth.

What a disgraceful performance against the type of side that we need to beat to have any chance of staying up. Make no mistake we were second best all over the field, the only plus point being we weren’t beaten by the six goals we deserved to be. I am afraid that there is no way back from this, Championship here we come. With a new manager I hope……
Report abuse
no point in complaining. the harsh reality is that our results are only reflecting our financial muscle and in the premiership there are no hiding places
Report abuse
Another shambles, sorry I think Mowbray has lost the plot and needs replacing now so that the new manager has time to assess for next season. I’d like to know who’s idea it was not to recruit experienced players this season, Mowbrays or Peace, please someone be honest at the club and tell us. I’ll think long and hard about renewing my season ticket next season. This is rubbish.

Mowbray is going no where with this team, why doesn’t he admit that the players are not good enough for this league. At Fulham today they where out played by a team that was nearly relegated last season, the score should have been5-1 .When his he going to com on TV and say they where Crap as every baggies fan see, but not Mr Mowbray its bad luck this and bad luck that. The players he has no are the players he has bought so he has to stand or fall by them and I’m afraid it is the latter. When are the baggies fans going to turn against him, I’m afraid if he doesn’t change his methods, and he has stated he will not change then I’m afraid his time is running out
Report abuse
I have looked at all the remaining fixtures for the season, and playing like we did against Fulham, cannot see another win!!
I am now getting concerned with Mowbrays Steadfast rufusal to play anyone in midfield who can actually win the ball. Against Fulham he started with 4 central midfielders meaning at least two were out of position. This is compounded by the fact that they created nothing going forward and do not give the much maligned defence any cover whatsoever. This is Mowbrays team and he still will not accept that without some steel and some fight we will go down. I was angry and embarased by the performance at Craven Cottage and other manager e have had in the recent past have been fired after such a showing. Simpson is not good enough he does not see the passes quickley enough usually running into blind alley’s and invariably losing posession. Unless Mowbray accepts this fundamental fact we are doomed. We are toopredictable and move the ball so slowly we are easy to defend against. I can’t se us staying up unless he changes tactics bigtime
Report abuse
Saw the game live here in sunny Brisbane. Albion play some good stuff up to teh last third, then , there is no penetration. That Valero is so over rated, does nothing but pass sidewards or, to no-one. Koren is a smart little player but is too good for the front two. Simpson looked like he was carrying a knock? and that donkey between the sticks hardly inspires confidence in his defence does he? Have to start winning soon or its back to the CCC and derby days with Wolves
Report abuse
For the third match in a row, we were absolutely pathetic – no organisation, no desire & very little ability.
I can’t see where the next point is coming from.
Another abject performance by a group of very average players. Sorry ToMo but the natives are beginning to doubt your abilities. Everybody else seems able to see the blindingly obvious except you and Venus…..WE NEED A DEFENSIVE/HARD TACKLING MIDFIELDER DESPERATELY!! The back 4 have no protection whatsoever, nobody snapping into challenges to break up the play. Surely Mulumba is worth a try? Lets be honest the Spanish lad, Manuel is a total joke. Why he keeps getting picked is beyond me. Koren will never put in a committed challenge. Morrison poor today. Tex did ok. Best of the 4 – then you substitute him!?!?!? To be fair to Brunty he did ok when he came on. No wonder the back 5 are so nervous and look so poor when the ball just keeps coming back at them. The faith is draining fast ToMo. Changes needed for Everton – please drop Valero and replace with either Mulumba or Dorrans.
It has to be said. Performances of THAT quality are not acceptable at any level. Outplayed from beginning to end, no confidence, no game plan that was recognisable and some just didn’t want to know. If Fulham had been lucky, they could have had five goals. Carson, Barnett and Meite worked hard enough, Robbo was adequate, (mind elsewhere?), Tex did have a go before subbing and Fortune needed some help, but didn’t get it. Morrison didn’t look fit and Simpson, did he actually play? Koren was the only one who looked his usual self in midfield. The rest, lightweight, inaccurate and ‘lost’ without a map. The big derby is looking more like a Championship match again next season. Greening, Olsson and Clem are being missed more than any of us dared think.

So, that’s the result of four days intensive training in Spain? What a joke! Without the help of the woodwork and some fine saves from Carson Albion would have been thrashed 7-0!
I see that Mowbray is now bemoaning the lack of Premiership experience in the side – well whose fault is that Tony? Many fans told you what was required in the January transfer window yet you failed to act. You put this side together yet you seem clueless as to how to get them to perform.
The champinship beckons and the scary thing is that I cannot see this side bouncing back into the top league for a long, long time.
Time for the manager to look at his purchases, and realise he made fundamental mistakes. No experienced centre half, in fact no Premiership experienced player. Living on borrowed time Mr Mowbray, and can’t expect miracles off young kids like Simmo. And Meite……what an awful buy. If he is 2m then so is Neil Collins!!!

Joke, pathetic, abject and overall a very sad day. We had no pride no spirit no nothing, I thought I would be sorry to say this but I am not, Mowbray has to go now.
We have been playing poorly for a long time now and that “performance” ws the icing on a very mouldy cake for me yesterday
I know as albion fans we have to have a thick skin, but after that shambles yesterday you have to ask yourself why do we bother
Tony, thanks for your service but do the graceful thing and resign, you have lost the dressin room and unfortunately lost the plot
A very sad day in my 17 years of supporting the albion

Wow! I thought I’d posted FIRST not 24th! That performance certainly brought out the Mowbray Haters in force. Where are the others like me? I still want him to stay because he has the guts to try FOOTBALL for us but he could well crack under the stress. One point made somewhere above was ‘we don’t move the ball quickly enough’. THAT sums up yesterday in a nutshell. It was a bit like the Spain v England
match, we couldn’t pass water and were much too slow because there was next to no movement.
Young Simpson needs to stop wondering whether he’s impressing Wenger and start impressing us! He’ll be available to buy at the end of the season not available to try in the Arsenal team. Can we repair the damage? And we still need a vociferous CAPTAIN.

I’ve always been quite supportive of Mowbray but it’s difficult to defend him after yet another performance of such dross. We must have more steel in the midfield – by motivating all of the players to put some effort into their game & by picking players who have the ability to tackle. I’ve seen most of Albion’s games, home and away, this season but I’m not wasting any more money on going away on the basis of that performance.

Yes that was dire, almost as bad as last week. I know I’ll get shouted down but I’ve seen performances like that in the past under some of our better managers.
Tony Mowbray has a lot of hard decisions to make. First team coach, fitness coach, some of the players but I think he is the man to do it. If we get rid of him, who do we replace him with? One of the old tired tried and tested brigade, perhaps give Robson another go or a young up and coming manager, like Tony Mowbray was and who will have to learn the ropes all over again. Either way they will want to bring their own players in and we will be back to square one. Perhaps we should try for Mourhino.
Tony Mowbray has tried to do things in a different way (if I remember correctly most on here were right behind him at the end of last season, some still are but they now have knives in their hands) Yes he has bought most of these players but due to our financial clout, most of them are gambles. Like it or not unless we attract a rich investor then we will remain a yoyo club. Surely this is better than staying mid championship.
I think we will now go down but twelve months is a long time in football, remember Derby a year on from beating us in the play offs. I fully expect us to gain promotion and possibly passing a bankrupt Hull going the other way. Not much consolation at the moment I know.
All I can say is let’s stay behind the team for the rest of the season, I know it’s not going to be easy but how many have sung ‘Albion til I die’ now is the time to show you mean it.
Say no to knee jerk reactions. Sacking the manager isn’t always the answer if the man is any good and I still believe Mr Mowbray will come up trumps in the long run. If he’s given the chance.

im not one for calling for the managers head but when he leads us back from the championship next season(party in the vine)i just hope hes learned from his mistakes, lets just see the season out now and come back better and stronger for our expierence,is there really any point sacking tomo now,aye boing boing MOWBURY

We were a disgrace. There’s not one ounce of fight from any of the players. We were shambolic all over the pitch.
I’m fed up now of sticking up for the management “giving them another chance”, MOWBRAY OUT NOW! To top everything off, he was standing there laughing on the dug out! I can’t believe he hasn’t been sacked earlier, but of course Mr Peace would have to pay him out, so we’ll just have to stick with him, playing players out position.
I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve lost all heart, I’ve got no desire to go to the matches week in week out knowing what the outcome is going to be. Next home game Arsenal midweek, do I bother going in the cold to watch us get mauled, or stay in and watch sky sports news??

Let’s look at the bigger picture. Football management is the most over-rated executive job in Britain. Trawl the websites and hardly any supporter is happy with their manager. They all gamble with our money and support and trust…and just hope. Tony Mowbray at least tries to play football and maintains a dignity. He rightly does not criticise players on radio or TV. He keeps any internal disputes to himself. BUT he has been given reasonable funds and backing. The entire squad, apart from Robinson, Greening and the injured Clement are his signings. AND some of his on-field decisions are inexplicable, starting with playing Cech – bought as a left back – right side, midfield, during the first game at Arsenal. Some players he’s bought and sold, or put out to grass on loan, leaving us mystified as to why they have been bought at all. Does he just change his mind after seeing them perform for us? YET to sack him now seems extreme. We were singing his praises only last May, with a team which won our first title since 1920. We were also through to our first FA Cup semi final place since 1982. Is there anyone out there who we could honestly say would do a wonderful job? Nigel Pearson? Sean O’Driscoll? Or some has-been from the prem’? Mowbray’s biggest mistakes include his stubborn resistence to the blindingly obvious – that we need a ball-winner in midfield as a guard against the back four – and random purchases and loans from all over the world. Our team does not seem to share a common language on the pitch. But it’s not over yet.
(You are right, Dudley Baggie, number 2, the laughter on the bench at the penalty miss, with Fulham left to defend what would have then be a one goal lead for two more minutes, was an absolute disgrace).

Games are running out fast now as is the patience of many fans who although appreciate your footballing philosophies, wont put up with continuously watching such performances (if you can call them that)as against Newcastle and Fulham.

Too many players obviously not fit and the same dismal format in midfield. Not one midfield player has a tackle in them. Robinson and Barnett are nowhere near good enough for this league.
I, at this juncture will not join the reactionaries and call for the managers head.
However, i will not follow him blindly regardless,
and i am increasingly difficult to accept the same obvious mistakes week on week.
EVERYONE knows that Koren`s best position is in the centre of midfield, EVEYRONE knows that Morrisons best position is wide right, why play them in a role reversal, and why persist with it when it`s clearly not working.
Valero, the worst of a bad bunch on Saturday, and should have been hauled off, but somehow you knew that he wouldn`t be, likewise you know he will be selected against Everton regardless of many grossly ineffective displays.
One thing that the manager cannot be blamed for alas is the unacceptable capitulation of our midfield out there on the pitch.
One can accept losing, but not in a manner that the opposition have more time on the ball than they would in a training session, funamental closing down just did not happen, and showed a complete lack of desire, fight, determination, and worse of all, any semblance of interest.
Ummm.. well that was a pretty gutless performance all round. So much for a sunshine break…they would have been better off spending time learning a few basics. Obviously a complete lack of confidence running throughout the team, but I must say that Fulham at home this season are a much better team than ever they used to be. Anyroadup we have absolutely no chance of avoiding the drop back into the league of death and Mowbray will have until October to demonstrate that he has the bounce back factor. Can anyone explain whys Tex played 4 mins of the second half and then was subbed. What did Mowbray see in those 4 mins to convince him to make the change??? I noticed that when Tex came off he spent about 60 seconds ‘chatting’ to Venus and Grant about the decision. Bizzare or what !!

There is no disgrace losing at Fulham, they are as good as anyone at home despite being rubbish away. It’s at home that you will shape your future, that’s how Stoke seem to be doing it. Make the Hawthorns a fortress and you can still do it.

Didn’t see the game – thankfully – but read TM’s comments on the WBA official site. Everything he said was fairly reasonable, but more revealing was what he didn’t say – nothing about the team needing to play BETTER, nothing about the need for more COMMITMENT, nothing about the lack of TEAM SPIRIT.
Seems to me that TM’s given up, and that’s communicated itself to the team.

Hello Malvern
You are right, it`s no disgrace losing to Fulham,
what was a disgrace though mate, was the air of acceptance and inevitabillity by our players that we would lose.
us fans told TM that we did’nt have the firepower at the beginning of the campaign to survive at this level, wouldnt listen until it was to late, screamed at him we needed a fighter in midfield, there’s absolutley no protection for our defence, it’s the most spineless & gutless midfield i’ve seen for many a year. VALERO well enough said…
Report abuse
Earlier in the season, Mowbray kept on insisting that our forwards were good enough (despite what the fans ere saying)before eventually relenting & making two good signings in January.
Time to listen to the fans again, Tony – play an enforcer in Midfield alongside Koren (Pele/Mulumbu/Barnett) – we will get nowhere without one because at this stage of the season, you have to fight to earn the right to play your football.

It’s a disappointment I know, but is relegation back to the championship such a bad thing? It’s no fun sitting bottom of the pile in the prem, rarely winning, and watching terrible performances from a team you know can do much better.
At least in the CCC you will be winning games, working towards things other than just ‘trying to get out of relegation zone’ .. Yo yo’ing for a while is a part of higher class football, IF Wolves did manage promotion this season I can only see us in the exact same position as you this time next year, as we were the last time we were promoted, and I remember thinking ‘I wish we WERE back in the championship’ Until you can be absolutely comfortable in the prem… Nobody likes disappointment week in week out. Who cares if the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea won’t be prancing around on your home pitch. Work on winning championship games next season, building a great team, and sorting out your manager.

Well, after Fulham, there is now much more certainty about our Short Term future; there is something powerful about maintaining realism.
First up, very disappointed with the lack of energy, intensity or fight. I know that TM can motivate people, though right now, its not really happening how we’d like, is it?
This is the key reason why I now feel 70% certain, that the siren call of the Championship is stretching out her languorous hand for next season.
The only things that can change the current parameters, are things we can do in the Short Term; get injured players back, start fighting, get a stronger spine, do things at home, unite.
Changing the Manager in my mind is a Long Term decision; the risks, rewards & impact in the Short Term, are questionable.
It is my sense that it is the People on the Park that will make the biggest difference in the Short Term, hence that ought to be the focus.
The People in the Stand too play a role, and losing some doesn’t help the cause, despite how understandable their choice might be.
Personally, I’ve always liked TM. I like the smile he has brought to our faces these past 2 years by playing the kind of football we desire. I like his humility and courage.
So, the Premiership may once again be a bridge too far this season, but I’m sure the Learning will pay off, in the Longer term …

Tony Mowbray CANNOT motivate players otherwise we would not be in this position and playing so badly!!
Good managers can get the best out of their
players most of the time.
In the Championship his team has more time and space and skill to play attractive football AND win games but the Prem. is much more skilful and competitve and has shown TMs limitations – Stubborness bordering on obsessive unwillingness to change playing style and accept that players need to be dropped.
He has some good players capable of performing really well but something is missing.
Have they finally also lost faith in Tony Mowbray. It would explain the poor performances. Look how the Chelsea players (allegedly)played poorly and Scolari was sacked.
The same players performed at a different level at the weekend!!
The ship is heading for the iceberg Tony.
Its time to change course otherwise you will take us all down with you.

I wasnt keen on Simpson keeps trying all the fancy footwork and gives the ball away too much, think i would rather have Moore, Valero doesnt seem to commit himself enough and i couldnt understand why Brunt was a sub and didnt start the game. Also amazed how Mobray is still in the job.
