Wolves clash to shut car parks
Saturday 21st February 2009, 11:00AM GMT.
Streets will be sealed off, car parks closed and pubs shut in Wolverhampton tomorrow due to the “high-risk” clash between Wolves and Cardiff City.
Hundreds of police officers will descend on the city centre to keep the peace between home fans and up to 1,400 away supporters – resulting in disruption for shoppers and motorists.
A grudge developed between the clubs after Cardiff supporters battled with riot police in the Steve Bull Stand in 2006.
Violence spilled on to the streets after the final whistle, with yobs hurling stones in the city centre and one police officer being knocked out.
West Midlands Police has categorised the match as high-risk and Wolves as a “bubble” game, meaning away fans will be escorted both to and from Molineux.
Jack Hayward Way, Molineux Street, Camp Street and Great Western Street will all be closed tomorrow, with car parks in those areas out of bounds to the public.
The Cardiff coaches will be parked at Faulkland Street car park, which has 180 spaces and will be closed all day.
Chief Superintendent Richard Green, said: “The whole policing operation is planned to minimise risk to supporters, tackle any potential disorder and ensure public safety.”
Pubs in the city centre have also been advised not to open until 1pm, when the match kicks off.
Cardiff fans will be in the lower tier of the Steve Bull Stand tomorrow and not served any alcohol. The security measures will be at their strongest from 10 minutes before the end of the game and up to 15 minutes afterwards.
