Traffic chaos as two hurt in crash

Saturday 21st February 2009, 2:00PM GMT.

Two motorists were taken to hospital following a three-car smash in Wolverhampton this afternoon which caused traffic chaos on the outskirts of the city.

The collision happened on Goldthorn Hill, about 80 yards from the Aldi supermarket, as the road was busy with Saturday shoppers making their way into the city.

One of the injured suffered neck injuries and was removed from his car on a spinal board before being taken by ambulance to New Cross Hospital.

The second casualty is believed to have suffered less serious injuries, but was also taken to hospital for checks.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident, near the junction with Parkfield Road, just after noon.

Motorist Derek Weekes said the accident caused major traffic problems in the area.

“There were no diversions set up so people were turning up side streets, but finding themselves on a housing estate unable to find a way out.

“People were driving round like wasps in a bottle,” said Mr Weekes, aged 54, of Dudley.

The occupants of the third car were unhurt.

The road was expected to stay closed for two hours.
