New Albion duo backed to shine
Saturday 21st February 2009, 11:12AM GMT.
Albion boss Tony Mowbray has predicted important roles for Juan Carlos Menseguez and Youssouf Mulumbu in the Baggies’ survival fight.
The deadline-day loan signings are both in line for possible debuts at Fulham, after impressing during the warm-weather training trip to Spain.
French midfielder Mulumbu was an unused substitute in the 3-2 defeat to Newcastle, after moving from Paris Saint Germain.
Argentine winger Menseguez is available for the first time, after moving from San Lorenzo in his homeland for the rest of the season.
Mowbray said: “They both showed up well in Spain. Menseguez seems to be a player who thrives in space.
“His first week here was snow-bound and we had a quarter of a pitch under covers, so it was quite tight and a bit physical, because he is quite diminutive.
“Yet, in the open spaces on the grass, he can skip past people with good tricks and he has the ability to deliver crosses. I am pretty sure he will play an important part.
“Mulumbu is what we have been looking for. His strength is winning the ball back, he has got a lovely personality, has great humility about the way he plays and he knows his strengths.
“They will both travel with us to Fulham. We will see what we decide on a starting line-up but they are both in contention for the starting line-up as well as the bench.”
But Mowbray has warned against heaping undue pressure on his latest signings.
He said: “I don’t want to build them up as some secret weapon that’s going to roll the Premier League over. They are a couple of young lads coming in and trying to make an impact.”

I know it’s Saturday because we had sausage, swedes and mash, lovely brown, thick gravy followed by Belgian chocolates. The results today mean we can only depend on ourselves to climb the table, which is as it should be. The new men will probably come on as subs. Keep it tight for 20 minutes, then attack, attack, attack!

What survival, we will never have another Great Escape,How can we survive with the players we have today they have no fight backbone or the will to win,and who;s fault is it Mr Mowbrays. He said on TV we will have to win most of our home matches,is that starting with Arsenal which is our next home match .I think he is living in a world of his own if he thinks we can stay up be just winning home matches Im afraid his methods are championship not premiership
