Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Wolves blog: Stand and deliver
Friday 20th February 2009, 9:15AM GMT.
Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd has urged the team to stand up and be counted in front of a white-hot Molineux against Cardiff on Sunday.
It’s been an odd few days leading up to Sunday’s game, with many fans feeling a loss against Cardiff will see the end of our title and even promotion aspirations.
Rock bottom, desperate and in crisis are strange words to use when we are still top of the league, but lets not kid ourselves, we all know that Wolves are lucky to be still leading the pack.
The game kicks off a run in of 13 games, the majority of which you would expect the early-season Wolves team to win quite easily.
But we all know that this is a different side from the electric, free flowing, early season pace setters.
This is a team who may still lead the league, but whose worrying loss of form has put them under immense pressure from the fans that fear our season’s conclusion may not be a happy one.
Now is the time that our key players – Michael Kightly, Matt Jarvis, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Foley need to shrug off the last few months and return from their siesta recharged and ready to charge to the finish line.
It’s also an opportunity for manager Mick McCarthy to sit down and rethink his tactics. The stubborn old mule will never admit when he has got it wrong, claiming not to be swayed by fans’ opinions and pressures to change the team around.
His bizarre comments that he feels that the team has been over attacking in recent games – whilst playing two central defensive midfielders in Henry and Quashie – has perplexed most of us.
There is little doubt that Mick and his team need the fans on their side from the off on Sunday – that is why the inclusion of a fit-again Dave Jones or Dave Edwards in the middle is a must.
If it were me, I’d play the both of them in a 4-5-1, with Edwards playing the role of the marauding midfielder. Then what do I know? What do any of us know?
Whatever system Mick chooses to play and – call it a hunch – I am guessing it may well be 4-4-2, it’s up to the players to stand up and be counted.
Cardiff fans will make one hell of a noise on Sunday, so the South and North banks need to dig deep and sing loud enough to drown out their patriotic warbling.
There will be nervousness in the home crowd, there is no getting away from that. I’m not going to start happy-clapping and insist that fans should get behind your team and simply forget the last few games.
But we must consider that many of the Wolves team has said that when they lose the support of the crowd, their game is affected massively. So it could be argued that the Molineux crowd have their biggest role of the season to play this weekend.
We must believe that Sunday marks the beginning of the great Wolves revival. We must believe that Mick can reinstall that early season zest and doggedness back into the team. We must stop thinking that we’ve blown it, because we haven’t.
Birmingham, Reading and Cardiff are not going to win every game remaining and neither are we.
Think we have got it bad? Imagine being a Charlton fan? Three years ago they were supporting a team that were mid-table in the Premier League, now find themselves miles from safety at the foot of this turgid league.
I’m sure they would wet themselves with laughter if they heard Wolves fans using words like rock bottom, desperate and crisis to describe our current plight.
Although I’ve no doubt that Cardiff’s former Wolves striker Jay Bothroyd will return and score, I’m going for a 2-1 win on Sunday and a kick-start to a promotion that is very much still within our grasp.
Have a good weekend and c’mon me babbies!

Unlike Mr Swain yesterday this is spot on. Dave Jones (ours!) is a must in midfield in a 4-4-2, but the problem is teams sitting back and not letting us use our wide pace so that’s the problem MM must solve. I can’t remember the sheep lovers making much noise in the past, but we must stick together. I think DJ was the best manager we’ve had in 20 years, but let’s finish his automatic promotion hopes.
the answer to it all is mick must start dave jones in the middle, sometimes he can have quiet games but everytime he is not in team we dont create chances and most of time fail to score, and for changes the tactics why its served us well all season its just mick got to pick the right players, henry, quashie dont work and if its them for sunday you cna forget the win, buit good blog anyways, rather be were we am than charlton….do or die for me sunday

Look, this “la-la, we’re top of the league, everything is rosy” attitude is silly. Look at the facts and look at the trends. They have won 1 in 9. To get promotion, they need to win a minimum of 6 of the last 13, probably more. Form tells you this ain’t gonna happen. Live with it.
Nerves in the crowd provide nervous footbal, back the boys from the South and North and give them the fighting courage.
We are top for a reason and need that form can return but all the negative and all out attacks on some of our players does not help.
Keep the faith and maybe the Fat Lady will be singing our song by the end of the season.

Most of these comments will be self evident to all Wolves fans. Why don’t you tackle the real issue and the real culprits:the failure to supplement the squad with an additional 2 quality players in January. This failure rests squarely with the CEO and the owner.

another fair submission Nathan. Keep it up.
Dont know if its a jaded recollection of the past, but im not convinced mick will will ring the changes necessary, and he will stubbornly persist.

Recently we have played Sheff United, Bristol City, Burnley, Reading and Preston! All fighting for the playoffs or promotion. Not rubbish teams. These teams are in top few places. Thats 5 out of 9 games against decent teams! We have only two(maybe 3) games now till the end of the season against “difficult” teams. That leaves 30 or 33 “easy” Points available!
Reading have still to play Bristol, Blues and Sheff United. Not easy games!
Blues have us, Sheff United, Bristol, Reading and Preston! Not easy!
I tell you whos run in I prefer! I would take being 2 points behind blues come the last day the season when they play Reading away!

I wish I could be there on Sunday. who ever is in the team on Sunday must give their all. They have I’m sure enjoyed their break away and now is the time to stand up and be counted. They have the ability that’s already been proven this season. So to all wolves fans that can be there. Get behind the boys and show them just how much it means to you all.

Sounds reasonable. Amazingly, having criticised you most of the season, I am in complete agreement with you. Blimey, I need a lie down.

At last a voice of moderated sanity – whether self evident or not.
Nice post nathan – mr swain please take note.
I am certainly not in the pro-mccarthy camp (in fact i wish him all the best in Korea), but between now and the end of the season i am fully behind the club as a whole. We can do nothing about points lost and bad performances gone before much likewe cannot do anythink about promises made or what was or wasnt done in january.
If we just get behind the team whether you like mccarthy or not, like moxey or nor, trust morgan or not – it is the best way to get the club 12 points from 6 matches and that will suit me fine.
Come on you wolves !!!!!!!
P.S.
MM no problem with attackin!!!!!!! :
We would all prefer 4 wins and 2 losses
THAN
6 draws

Much more accurate views and insights from this blog, than from Swains drivvle.
The players need to strap on a pair, and MM needs to change things up. The fans always get behind the team when they see things are being done right. Two defensive midfielders isnt.

I’m fully expecting the players to be out of condition and a touch plumpish on Sunday. I know I am after a few days in Spain with a couple of restoratives in the morning and leisurely lunches and dinners.

Comments 2 and 4 – It’s all been said before. Do you want promotion this season or not? Stop the blame culture right now and get behind the team like never before. When we go up we can start planning for next season. Failure might look on the cards but we have turned it around twice already this season going on great runs. We are going to do it again. I think we were right to question everything after last Saturday’s performance, but that is history. The future starts on Sunday. Nathan’s blog is spot on. Martin Swain not so.

Fans should exactly forget the last few games.
Every game we play is the most important game we face. Whether that be the first of the season. A game when we are clear by 9 points. Or when we’ve won one in nine.
We shouldn’t be waiting for the first mistake as has happened in the last few games. We should be giving our all to the people who are on the pitch for the 90 minutes.
Outside of those 90 minutes then criticism or, as at the start of the season, further praise can be given.
But whilst that match is happening it is the single most important thing.

MATE WHEN WOLVES ARE WOBBLING LIKE THEY ARE NOW..THERE’S NO EASY GAME OR EASY 3 POINTS. WE USUALLY STRUGGLE MORE AGAINST LOWER HALF TEAMS THAN TOP HALF ANYWAY. WE’RE UNDER PRESSURE NOW..WITH A YOUNG RELATIVELY INEXPERIENCED SIDE, WHICH I THINK WILL BE OUR DOWNFALL WHEN THE PRESSURE REALLY BUILDS END OF APRIL BEGINNING OF MAY.
THERE’S NO DOUBT A TOP 6 FINISH IS A CERTAINTY FOR US, BUT THE TOP 2 PLACES LOOK LIKE THE’RE SLIPPING AWAY FROM US. I REALLY HOPE I’M WRONG AND WE MANAGE TO HOLD ON TO TOP OR SECOND PLACE, COS I DON’T THINK WE’LL MAKE IT THROUGH THE PLAY OFFS IF WE MISS OUT ON AUTOMATIC PROMOTION.
BUT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO SUNDAY..EVEN THOUGH CARDIFF WILL BEAT US I’M AFRAID.

I think our ambition said it all in the january transfer window. that is the ambition of wolves, if we were serious for promotion, than we would have bought the players to fill roles we are lacking in. Quality midfield, and one more quality defender.

Midfield is the key on Sunday.
If the midfield performs as it has done for the last couple of months we are in trouble.
McCarthy must pick the right blend in midfield though and one of Jones or Edwards, preferably Jones must play.
If McCarthy starts with Henry and Quashie in midfield together and we dont perform and get a win on Saturday the blame lies with him.
I just hope we come out all guns blazing like earlier in the season and get the three points we desperately need. A defeat, even a draw is unthinkable. We need a win!

Let’s be honest, our Home support has been rubbish. Empty seats everywhere. Our biggest crowd? Blues at home was it and Sheff Utd? That’s it. Every other game has been 22,000 – 23,000 and hardly a top of the league atmosphere.
Derby, Norwich, Sheff Utd sell more tickets than us. Even Leeds and Leicester in League 1!!
Hopefully our armchair and express and star comment page fans will turn up to help us out in the Playoffs.

Just an opinion mate. How can anybody honestly say that we will win on Sunday. We have won once in 9 and this blogging idiot is just happy clapping the fans into thinking everything will be ok.
We are going to blow the run in after such a wonderful start and I for one won’t be bothering with my season ticket for next year.
We needed serious investment in the transfer window and instead we picked up second hand second rate rubbish. Quashie? Reid? We could and should do Berra…..
I’m a realist, as I think a lot of fans are. Get rid of Mick now, he’ll walk at the end of the season with a million quid in his pocket and the odd appearance on TV when Barnsley are playing.

IDIOTS THAT WANT TO GET ON PLAYERS BACKS ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE GROUND.
We can still do this as we have enough winnable games. We will score enough goals but need Hennessey back to the form of last season, not Henry and Quashie to play together and Berra and Stearman to forge a partnership.

I stopped posting as it was all so negative. Whether we go up or not we will all be here next season. I do not believe MM sends out a team to lose, he has been naive at times in stubborn selections when we can all see the midfield problems. 13 games to go and we are in the top two, back to back wins will send this team’s confidence sky high and they are coming, maybe not Sunday as a draw looks highly likely but we will go up automatically as long as the fans and MM find the testicular fortitude to stay the course.
Come on Wolves!!

You ask how we can say with ‘certainty’ Wolves will win on Sunday? Simple – We can’t, but then again, would you rather read FANS with an air of positivity about Sunday or those that come on here just to say ‘We WILL lose on Sunday and We WILL blow promotion this season’ .. Because if saying we will win on Sunday is ‘impossible’ to know, then so is saying we will lose the match and our promotion fight.
As people have rightly pointed out, form is temporary, a run of 13 games unbeaten is the main reason we still have top position still as it stands at this moment. The form dropped, as expected at this point in the season, for all teams, the fact that we are still top by 3 points goes to show rival promotion chasers also face the same form dips otherwise we’d have been overtaken by now.
Fair enough, there are games in hand for other top teams, namely Reading and Cardiff, this doesn’t guarantee they will all be wins. both clubs have some tough fixtures coming up, where as we have faced our toughest challengers already. (Unless you count Birmingham coming up, but I think they’re in much the same position as us) But that’s not discarding the fact that every one of our remaining games IS crucial, lower clubs fight harder to scramble points toward the end of a season, so it was never going to be a walk in the park. But the fact remains, the team that absolutely blew away any other challenger between august – November is STILL our team, bad form right now, I agree, but it’s still us, still our manager, still our lads.. Fully proving we DO have what it takes, within us. And I don’t think at this point in time expressing the opinion (yes you are entitled to it before someone comes on with caps locks) that we WILL blow promotion ‘again’ .. If we are so doomed why bother coming back season after season to say the same things? Evidently you remain Wolves supporters, throughout disappointment. Our support at matches and our reaction to the team with our cheers may or may not help surge them on.. But does that mean we should stop? No – our ‘job’ as supporters is to go to these matches, cheer and cheer, and when we’re poor, and we’re disappointed.. We cheer some more. So then it cannot be said, we are the worst supporters in the country , the most fickle, bla bla .. Because WE KNOW how passionate we are, and always have been.
So take each match as it comes.. Lets wait and see for Sunday, before stating unknowable facts such as ‘we Will lose’ .. Because I know WE CAN win, will we win? .. We’ll see..

Read all the above and can see whose glass is half full and whose is half empty! All teams go through a purple patch and that is what we are seeing at the moment. “The criticism only comes from a minority of people but sadly they seem to make the most noise.
“The idiots on the message boards seem to rule the roost as I well know from my past history – ask any manager and they will tell you they are the bain of our lives these days.
“They don’t have a clue what’s going on inside the club, what happens day in, day out, but they are all sat up there in their mum and dad’s attic, still at home, 40 years old, and telling you what you should be doing.
“They don’t know half of the things that go on and what you have to deal with.”

A fair and reasonable post by Nathan, certainly more in-tune with the fans’ feelings than patronising Martin Swain.
Not one Wolves fan truly wants us to fail, we all want (crave) success. For that reason alone, I implore EVERY fan who turns up tomorrow to bust their lungs with endless singing. Now is the time to pull together, once and for all. I don’t fancy seeing this golden chance slip away and I know you lads don’t. So, take the opportunity to lift the roof off for 90 MINUTES. Should we fall behind, DO NOT make the huge mistake of throwing in the towel. CARDIFF WOULD LOVE THAT.
Let’s do our part FIRST and see what impetus this gives our team. If they fall short at season’s end, at least that pig-headed and outspoken Mccarthy bloke WILL NOT be able to point the finger AT US. Don’t give him the lame excuse he’d need to cover his own mistakes.
McCarthy is 100% correct in viewing these last 13 games as a new, “mini season”. Let’s all go down the Molineux as if we were starting all over again, from fresh. No matter WHO is selected; no matter which formation MM picks, we HAVE TO SUPPORT THEM TO THE HILT to get the result we desperately need.
Make Molineux a cauldron of hate for Cardiff and GET ON THEIR BACKS just as much as you should be getting BEHIND OUR BOYS. The Taffs hope to get a comfortable ride, but let’s give them hell!!!
WOLVES.
ENGLISH.
PROUD! ;-)

Sunday will be a typical Wolves game.W ehave it in our power to capitalise on 2 poor results by our challengers. So, it’s a dead set defeat, and ‘as you were’. Wolves are renowned for failing at the worst time.I dont have to remind anyone of our play off record, or games against PL teams in teh FA cup.If you want a “sould destroyer” , floow Wolves. Cardiff will be exactly the same.

Well that was certainly lucky for Wolves, only hanging on to a draw due to a mistake by the Cardiff goalkeeper.
