Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Wolves blog: The merry go-round
Friday 13th February 2009, 10:41AM GMT.
Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd weighs up the managerial sack race as his side suffer a dip in form.
Tony Adams was given 15 weeks at Portsmouth and despite losing just five games, Big Phil Scolari was only allowed seven months to meet the high expectations at Stamford Bridge.
Mick McCarthy is currently the fifth longest serving Championship manager, but he surely knows that if he doesn’t deliver promotion at the end of this campaign, then the Wolves fans may not be as forgiving as they were last season.
Last season we all had to endure a very mediocre standard of football. Rightly or wrongly, I called for Mick to be sacked at the end of a campaign when I felt that the club wasn’t progressing in the way it should.
It was probably shortsighted of me, but the football was dour and I am as impatient as many a football fan when it comes to demanding on the field success.
We all know that is a big problem in today’s game, not just at Wolves, but also at most of the more high profile teams across the country. But how can every single team in the league deliver success?
Expectations at our club have always been high and Mick has come out on more than one occasion to say that this expectancy has often weighed heavy on the shoulders of his young team and has affected performances on the field.
Despite only winning one league game since the start of 2009, there really shouldn’t be any need to panic. After all, we are still clinging on to top spot, with Birmingham and Reading giving us a much needed helping hand by also suffering a dip in form.
But does Mick need to go back to basics, looking at the team and the personnel that brought us so much success in the first half of the season?
In the first half of the season, Wolves almost drowned teams with wave after wave of fast, incisive, passing attacking football that would often wear down the opposition team into submission.
Mick now seems to be adopting a much more tentative approach to games, especially away from Molineux, where the team often looks set-up to snatch a point, rather than attack for all three.
We surely can’t play with two defensive midfielders in Nigel Quashie and Karl Henry, expecting to attack and hurt teams as we have done in the past?
If we do want more of a attacking threat then David Jones, who is a terrific passer of the ball, must be recalled, probably in place of Henry at the moment, who looks a bit leg weary.
We need that zip back in the team. That mean’s playing Michael Kightly and Matt Jarvis as wide as is humanly possible and giving Sam Vokes a decent run of games alongside Sylvan Ebanks-Blake up front.
I’m sure once Christophe Berra settles in alongside Richard Stearman at the back, then the back four should also stop leaking some of the daft goals we have seen of late.
Equally culpable recently has been our goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. His performances of late have resembled a player low on confidence. He is a terrific keeper, but we need him now more than ever, to show that he can command his box and stop letting in goals someone of his quality should really be keeping out.
We should remember that this is the same team that entertained us so brilliantly earlier on in the season. If Mick returns to his attacking mantra, then I’m sure it can be again.
We have seen genuine progression over this campaign, so even if the worst happened and we didn’t quite make it, then I feel Mick should be given another shot at promotion next season.
But would the fans and the board be quite as understanding? Somehow I doubt it.
With Reading having this weekend off, we again have a chance to extend our lead at the top of the league. Unfortunately we have to beat the Premier League players of Burnley to achieve that.
I haven’t been to Turf Moor since 2002, when I witnessed a dramatic game, which Wolves won 3-2 and featured a rather depressing performance from the once great player, Paul Gascoigne.
A win up in the Pennines would be a much needed boost, especially with in-form Cardiff closing in on a top two spot and current having a massive distraction with the FA Cup.
Finally, congratulations to Charles Ross and his nominations at the 2009 football fanzine awards for ‘A Load of Bull’. Show him you care and vote here:- http://www.footballfanzineawards.com.
Have a good weekend.

If Mick does go, I would either like the swansea gaffer, roberto di matteo or Avram Grant, Incey should come back and coach, I think it would benefit our central midfielders and definately Keogh on being direct and aggresive. We have too many light weighters, like Edwards, Jones, Henry we need a real ball winner, how I miss Alex Rae.

Nice blog Nathan… I to wanted mick out last season as the football was the worst Ive seen in years, but like you said we are clinging to the top of the league and should keep with him all the way but he’s got to get the 3 points from these games we have left! not 1 but all 3….. I can’t beleive the amount of donkeys shouting out off with Micks head and get him out jibes that are already posted on most of the wolves stories!!! Were in a totally different situation at the moment from last season…. Come on WOLVES prove these numptys wrong
Report abuse
good blogg! i think alot of us are feeling the nerves and are wondering why it is all going wrong at the moment!
IF we could string together three or four wins I think that would set us up nicely and we know from earlier in the season the team is capable of it!
Fingers crossed for tomorrow! I need wolves to win as im going to be watching the england wales rugby with a welsh family! And i dont fancy our chances there!

You say ‘playing Michael Kightly and Matt Jarvis as wide as is humanly possible.’ That’s the problem and one of the reasons we are getting turned over IMO. Henry struggles as a cosequence, as he tries to man a vast open area in what amounts to a 4-2-4 formation. In this respect, we’ve been sussed out. Mick himself states that teams aren’t having to work to score past us. I agree, which is why a new formation might be a good option, say 5-3-2. But hey ho, up the Wolves tomorrow!
I’m in total agreement with you Nathan. What I cannot understand is Mick’s tinkering with the side that has had a detrimental effect, particularly on the back four. The midfield lets us down as we need at least one fearsome ball winning tackler in there plus one creative ball player along with Kites and Jarvis flying at the opposition like at the start of the season. Once our back four are on song again we should see the confidence levels shoot up.
If MM doesn’t deliver a top two finish and if we lost in the play offs I suspect he could be gone, for better or worse. Unfortunately MM is his own worst enemy in many respects, but let’s be positive – It’s all still there to play for so let’s go and grab it!
Nathan i agree with most of it except if we don’t go up we should DEFINITELY sack him and give someone else a try. Also if we don’t go up we will almost certainly lose players and not the ones we want to lose.
“If we didn’t quite make it. Mick should be given another shot next season.”
Are you having a laugh? Did this guy really just say that? Are you even a Wolves fan?
i never wanted mick to go last year ,i thought he needed 1 more chance .But i think its time to go get ince in now and i think we will go up
Report abuse
Im sure Mick said last season give me 3 years at the most to get promotion. Well this is his third year and sorry failure this time will mean a P45 in June.
Im glad where we are and think we will still make it, but if we dont it will be worse than not going up in 2002!
Heaven forbid we don’t quite make it this season. But I agree, to start again next season with a new manager would be a disaster. Mick deserves one more shot. Do we really want to wait another 3 years?
Oh and Lee (8). Ince? Are you completely Chicken Oriental?
Good blog Nathan. Agree with you, especially regarding our midfield area.
However I dont agree that Mick should have another chance if we miss promotion.
I think Mick is amazing at motivating a young squad and creating a good team spirit. But I do doubt his ability to build long-term, and fully develop the potential that our young players have.
At the end of this season, he has had 3 years. 3 years should be enough to fully develop the team you want, playing in the style you want them to.
However what style does Mick prefer? Is is the fluent attacking approach that amazed us all in the first weeks of the season? Or is it the dire defensive approach, hoffing long balls towards the strikers that we have also seen.
If we do go up, its almost for sure that we will see the departure of Kights, and Ebanks-Blake. There is a chance, that we will lose Foley, Jarvis, and maybe even Vokes as well. What is this young and hungry approach worth then?
Do we trust Mick to rebuild AGAIN?
I certainly think we should keep the approach of trying to build a team of young an hungry players. However in case we dont go up, I do think we should get somebody in, who are actually able to build for the future.

IF WE GET PROMOTED, THE MAIN THING IS..WILL THE BOARD BACK MICK OR LEAVE HIM OUT TO DRY LIKE DAVE JONES. WITH THE RIGHT BACKING HE COULD BE OK, WITHOUT IT HE WON’T DO ANY BETTER THAN HE DID WITH SUNDERLAND.
SO THE MANAGER AIN’T THE CONCERN AT THIS POINT..BUT THE CHAIRMAN AND BOARD MEMBERS NEED TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED, AND PROVE THEIR COMMITMENT TO CLUB..LIKE WE DO BY RENEWING OUR TICKETS SEASON AFTER SEASON.

great blog nathan, I’m thinking mick should try a 5-3-2 , 3 god centre halves along with kites and jarv tearing up and down!!yes…it would mean them covering the whole length of the pitch with a bit of defending too but when it works its like having 13 players out there! i know some here might think that is a strange statement but i’m sure a man of your footballing knowledge knows where i’m coming from! what do you think about that Nath? and anyone else on here too?! a change might be as good as a rest!!
i can’t belive some of what I am reading!! You want Mick out? (lee – 1120 for example)
This is a tram of perennial underachievers (with the exception of 1 play off win under Jones) and the manager that nearly got there last year and has kept the team at the top of the league for most of this seasion should be sacked??
you must be mad.
OK they look a bit nervous and have suffered a dip in form – fortunately so have the others – but sacking him would be lunacy
Report abuse
What is it that make us think that Mick is such a great person at finding young talent.
Look at our 3 best players:
Ebanks-Blake – was allready banging goals in for Plymouth.
Jarvis – Team of the year in League One, yet Mick continues to say he was “unknown”.
Kights – Mick didnt find him
I agree Vokes and Foley are bargains, however what about the millions of pounds wasted on players such as:
Darren Ward
Shackell
Potter
Eastwood
Elliott
Also Jones and Edwards werent cheap considering how little they play.
Also, despite the young and hungry policy, 3 years into Micks reign, we still dont really see academy players given a chance.
So what is it that make us wanna keep him if we fail promotion?
We would have to rebuild anyway, so what is it, that make us trust that Mick can do it?
Is is the amazing youth work he did at Sunderland, or at Millwall?
Mick has done a good job, and at the time after Hoddle left, he was probably one of the best managers we could get. But give him a 4th season?
Great blog. Completely agree that progress has undoubtedly been made this season. If we don’t make it this season then, in my opinion Mick should be given another go. Wether we’d be able to keep this team together is another matter. I doubt wether the majority of fans would be willing to let Mick build another team. Wolvesmod – Are you being serious? If anyone looks like they don’t support Wolves it’s you!!
The muppet should be sacked even if we do go up,he aint got what it takes.
yes im being serious. Look at the rubbish mick’s brought in. Eastwood, Shackell, Potter, Elliot, Ward x2 the list goes on.
So if we don’t go up… give Mick another go? With what squad?
SEB, Kites, Foley, Hennessey and co. will all of gone.
And we’re back to square one.
Why would you want to keep Mick if he fails after how many years trying to get us up? In my opinion he should of gone when we finished 7th last season.

we should have signed Jason Scotland from Swansea and Chris Commons from Derby..
Mind you we had a good midfielder and let him go for peanuts..

The facts of our season to date are clear
1) We are top of the division
2) We have been their all season
3) We have won more games than any other team in the division
4) We have scored more goals than anyone else
5) We have the best striker in the division
Stop worrying about next season stop moaning and support the team. Every other side in this division wants to be where we are now.
We are going up, up the wolves!

I GENUINELY.. ALONG WITH MANY OTHER WOLVES FANS BELIEVE DAVE JONES WAS GIVEN THE SHORT END OF THE STICK FOLLOWING OUR FAILED PREMIER SEASON. HE WAS A GENUINELY NICE GUY AND HAD A BRILLIANT RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FANS. WE ALL KNOW HE’S A GOOD MANAGER TREATED PROPERLY..LOOK HOW WELL HE’S DOING AT CARDIFF.
IF STEVE MORGAN CAN USE THE SCOUSE FACTOR AND TEMPT DAVE BACK TO MOLINEUX..(SHOULD WE FAIL TO UP) I ALONG WITH THOUSANDS OF OTHERS WOULD WELCOME HIM BACK WITH OPEN ARMS.
OK MICKS DONE GOOD WITH HIS TIME HERE, BUT HE’S NOT IN THE SAME VEIN AS JONESY..DAVE IS YOUNGER, WITH EXCELLENT MAN MANAGEMENT SKILLS AND DOES PICK HIS BEST 11 ON MERIT NOT FAVOURITISM. NOTHING PERSONAL MICK, BUT JONESY IS THE BEST MANAGER WE’VE HAD IN DECADES..HE WAS HEARTBROKEN WHEN SACKED..AND FULLY DESERVES ANOTHER GO .. WITH THE RIGHT BACKING DAVE WOULD GET US UP AND KEEP US UP..NO PROBLEM.

No Nathan this is not the side that entertained us so brilliantly, mick has messed with it to give Keogh and Collins a place in the side,he has played Keogh in every position except keeper. Last week you tried to fight his corner, but iff we as a club have any aspirations of playing in the premiership next season,I defy you or any other fan on here to tell me they honestly believe Andy Keogh should have been given a new two year deal..We are supposed to be aiming for the big time, iff any player or manager doesnt come up with the goods,,dont put your arm round them and say itl be ok,,rip them to bits and tell them its not ok,we pay them good money to perform on a Saturday, iff they dont get rid..Iff I was given the honour of wearing the Gold and Black,I would put a shift in,I would be useless but I would put the shift in,would you kick me off the pitch,or pat me on the back for trying. My point is iff something or someone is not good for our club, there is nothing wrong with saying so.

One hundred percent correct we have more attacking players then defenders this team only know how to attack yet we are going through a point proving exercise that we can defend or can’t as the case may be.
McCarthy don’t go there just play wide, sharp attacking football until you can get players in such as Mancienne even Collins plays better at centre forward but don’t go there either.
Hennessey is too nice; a one-year training placement with the SAS will improve his character to match his ability.
When football managers set targets as low as win 12 out 20 games you know they are swaying towards negativity and they soon become accountants just like Moxey, his perfect team would consist of eleven goalkeepers.
Wardy has his work cut out tomorrow with their winger if we try to defend we lose simple as that, our defence can’t sustain continuous wide attacking pressure.
One other question if Wolves go up are the player’s good enough? The answer to that should bring forth the question of job preservation!
Interesting points Nathan and keeping the manager would certainly help with stability but should we fail to go up this time (and the possibilty could become reality if we continue our poor form) then many of our best players will be sort after by Premiership teams and there is little doubt they will go, contract or no contract!
We all have to remember that football is a business and money talks, the Championship is not rolling in money like the Premiership and all players dream to play there and if not with Wolves then with whoever offers the most hard cash!
McCarthy is not my favourite manager and I wanted him out last season but this time around he has put us top of the table, whether he can keep us there only time will tell but if he fails and we do not make the Premiership, what will Morgan & co do, release him or give him another few years?
Hopefully we will make the Premiership this time and if we do, we will all be asking the same question – can McCarthy keep us there?

We gave Mick some stick last year as the football was dire but at the moment we are top yes things need to change if were gonna stay there… but I I fail to see how it will help the situation if we sack him great Idea that is!! It’s important to remember that man management is a vital part of the manager’s role. That extends to “putting a comforting arm round” a young player’s shoulders or “kicking someone’s butt” when required. MM knows the players better than anyone and you have to trust him to do what’s required in any given situation. We only see “the public face”, who knows what goes on behind the scenes. Sure MM seems to have his “favourites” and can drive us mad but we have to believe we will go up this season. Also “rewarding” players with contract extensions is a demonstration that they are wanted at the club, and intended to boost morale. Finally having a player signed up for 3-4 years is likely to give us a better re-sale value should the player leave. We don’t want to let a player’s contract run out as with Miller and others. With the Mark Davies scenario we are told that Wolves were in talks with the player, his Dad and his agent. He obviously wanted Premier League football now rather than wait. Enuff said!

I 2nd what southbank no.24 said.
Mick aint half the manager Dave Jones is.
At the end of the day, Dave was and is wolves’ best manager during this time and should never of been sacked.
If Sir Jack had showed some ambition he would of given whatever Dave wanted, just like that Wigan chairman did.
But most fans will never say a bad word about Sir Jack, so you can’t win.
Regarding No. 24 I was gutted that Dave Jones was not given proper backing after missing out on promotion. Then when we looked like we might make it through the back door of the playoffs and did in great style, why was he hung out to dry? We had achieved the aim of Premier League football and he was given so little money to spend it was a joke. Not giving Butler a two year contract had a bad effect in the summer before a ball was kicked. Losing him to Leeds and having Murray and Lescott out long term with Miller missing part of the season meant we always looked like we would come straight back down and back to square one. Cort and Camara gave us hope near the end and who knows what might have been had we stayed up. The resulting sense of disappointment and deflation gave rise to poor performances and the board got their wish to sack Jones. I suspect they had wanted to see him fail in our promotion season so they could have got rid then.
I would have loved Jones to have still been at The Mol today. As for a comeback I think it’s highly unlikely as Jones was disgusted at his treatment. Such a shame as he was so grateful for Wolves giving him his chance after the debacle of the Social Services case. I was rightly proud of Wolves for giving him that chance. If it came to it I would be just as proud if he came back. Still we march on at the top of the league despite everything. Rollercoasters have got nothing on Wolves!

I’ll take money off all you doubters now…we ARE going to go up we just need a bit solidarity in the ranks and not be getting on the players backs. I’d be wearing a man nappy everytime I stepped out at molineux just incase i made a mistake and the so called fans jeered/booed/heckled me. No wonder McCarthy is changing the tactics to a more defensive style so as to nullify the trepedation of the’molineux fear factor’

24. You said David Jones always picks his best 11.
Remember Cardiff play off final ? Where as Alex Rae after scoring the winner at Reading ? How about the cup tie that season at Southampton ? Only one David Jones that matters.Lets hope he gets a recall with Henry on the bench. What Mick has achieved this season is brilliant. If we do screw up we can all have our say in May. In the meantime get behind him for automatic promotion.
Come on you Wolves !!

Booing and jeering players (Keogh and Collins included) is NOT going to serve any purpose at this stage of the season when things start to get a bit fraught. It is down to Mick McCarthy that we are top of the table. If we get promotion he will rightly get all the credit. BUT if we fail that will equally be down to Mick. Having got us to top spot by 7 points a few weeks ago he had the chance to bring in whatever reinforcements he wanted in January. He brought in Berra and Quashie and said that the squad was good enough. He knew the team had gone off the boil before the window closed but he felt that two signings were enough. It has all been in his hands so he lives or dies by the squad which is 100% his choice. If he is a good enough manager we will go up this season. The odds are still in our favour.
If we go up he will get immense credit for taking a second club into the Premiership. If we fail, having held a 7 point lead and having had the chance to improve his squad more if he had wanted, can he really expect another chance to do better next season?
MM has not changed his tactics; he still plays 4-4-2 with two wingers and twin strikers. Playing Quashie in midfield hardly constitutes shutting up shop. That said I believe that the time has come to play to win promotion away from home against the top sides, not necessarily to win the match. This means setting out our stall to keep clean sheets and to rely on the brilliance of Ebanks Blake to nick goals. At home our crowd easily drown out the to**ers who moan about MM only getting us to top of the league or players (but not all players!) making mistakes. At home we are a handful but we have suffered a dip in form, get over it.
This is the best team I’ve seen at the Mol since Dougan & Richards era, if we don’t go up this season what will sacking MM do for us. In reality we are a Championship side with aspirations of greatness. If we go up we will be odds on for relegation, we may even be elevated to the ranks of a Yo-Yo club for a few seasons. I can imagine the moans & groans we would have to listen to then from a section of our loyal supporters.
In our last season in the Prem we had one high spot, we beat Man U, the rest was mostly painful garbage with poor and mediocre teams regularly hammering us. If we think it will be different this time remember Middlesbrough. Take off the blinkers, they played us off the park, they out passed us, out thought us and over-ran us. We blamed the ref but in reality they could have been three up at half time.
Enjoy this season, relish where we are because next season if we are in the CCC the doom mongers and moaners will have their say and if we are promoted and have a battle the doom mongers and moaners will have their say.
Football has changed so much in recent years I honestly believe that the real enjoyment is in getting to the Premiership, once there the real nightmare begins.

19 – You’ve just said that in your opinion Mick should have been sacked last season? Clearly you were well off the mark with that one. Any new manager would be starting from scratch, another three years? Wheres this sudden clamering for Dave Jones come from? Wolvesmod and southbank, you have both been critical of our recent slump in form, have you forgotten who was manger when we got our ‘bottlers’ tag? Double standards chaps. Whilst Jones was a decent manager, letting that lead slip, does not represent a GREAT manager in my books. Instead of looking to the past and mud slinging at every opputunity, support the lads until the end. Our support may just pull us over the finishing line in first place. But the time for reflection and evaluation is at the end of the season, not at the most critical time!!!

I agree with several of the above posters in believing that Dave Jones was the best boss we’d had in years. He was very unfairly treated in my book, too. Sir Jack did much right, but spending so little on keeping Wolves up was the biggest mistake the old chap ever made -along with sacking Jonah.
Dave Jones is a plain speaking man, but he also conducts himself in a very dignified manner. He sets a fine example for others to follow and I, for one, would be delighted to have him back.
As for Mick, well, 3 yrs is plenty long enough to have achieved promotion. If we fail, I don’t believe that Mick would have a leg to stand on in his own defence. The team selection (tampering?) is his, the substitutions are his and the players brought in are his. If we fluff it after having held top spot for so long, it would be criminal and simply inexcusable. Then there’s the contentious issue of ridiculously-extended contracts to the likes of Keogh, Collins and Ward: just what is Mick playing at, ffs?
As for our dodgy defence, sorry, but there’s simply no excuse. Three years’ of McCarthy dictatorship later, and we’re still no closer to having a solid, reliable back-four. As a former centre-half himself, I’m amazed Mick still hasn’t sorted our Achilles heel.
And what of the fans? Would they be able to stomach yet another season of McCarthy arrogance? No manager in all my 40 years’ support has, to my memory, ever been so willing to make frequent digs at the very people who keep this club alive and well. If we don’t agree with his methods and we wish to question them, then we’re entitled to comment. Not according to dictator Mick, though. He needs reminding that respect is a two-way thing.
Mick’s done a pretty good job overall, I admit that. However, his flaws are once again surfacing and I’m pretty sure that the warring fans will be even further divided if he were to stay (assuming we don’t go up, that is). Can Wolves afford that? I don’t think so. Anything less than another, storming start to to next season would have the natives up in arms and baying for Mick’s blood. Anyone care to doubt that, even for a moment? Personally, I’d put money on it.

I think mick should be sacked. The side we have is;t good enough and isn’t a side that you can see will stay up they will just go down. Look at what he did recnetly he knows he needs a new centre mid and doesn;t see the answer right under his nose. A centre midfielder who is better than the ones we havem got and hes turns him down. Would you say that is a good manager? Then he signs a striker on a two year deal who is awful and just a workhorse with no goals. Keogh. Wolves in the side they have about 6 players in their squad I can see adjusting to the premiership. Just not good enough. I mean he has all the backing and all the money and he doesn;t spend hardly anything and exp[ects us to do well. Well I will tell ya Mick it doesn’t.

mmmmmm, interesting conversation,
It’s great to be top of the League, but where we will finish at the end of the season is not clear.
If the team believes they can do, then they probably will – if the fans get on the players backs, well the fans will get what the wish for, failure and another season in the CC.
Support the team, get promotion. Complaining is only going to get you one result.
If we do get to the Prem well that looks to be a whole different issue – how fast do you want to come back down?
My surprise packet for the season has been Hull, awesome what a team can do if the just believe in themselves, and the fans GET BEHIND THE TEAM. Yes I know they may still get relegated, but when the team went up I gave them zero chance, just shows how wrong I can be.
MM may not be everyone’s favorite but are you not all wolves supporters, it is your team get out and support them through thick and thin.
For those a little bit older remember the years in the old 4th division, how far things have come since them………….
Just be proud of the team and support the players, for as we all know we are the WOLVES.

Hold on a second, where did I say Mick should be sacked? At the end of last season I said just that, but this season he has my full support, not that he really gives a stuff about nuggets like me.
I even said that if we don’t go up then he should be given one more shot at it next season. How many players and fans will stick by him is another thing.
So, oxwolf, boycott all you want, call me a moron if thats how you get your kicks, but get your facts straight eh?

the problem is our centre midfielder Jones, henry and edwards are just not good enough. they’re all mick’s signings and he’s failed to sort it out in the window. i fear it will cost us our promotion and if it does the manager will have to take responsibilty. when the new boss does come in though and yes when rather than if; i hope he will stick with the wolves culture of playing with wingers the last thing we need now is a tippy tappy manager like hoddle. at least mick’s got the formation right if not a lot else.

He might have the formation right but not the tactics. Its same same old wings and nothin through the middle. Any team just need to stop the wingers and they have wolves. A doddle.
