Hit-run victim’s ‘miracle’ recovery
Wednesday 11th February 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
A holidaymaker who was feared dead after being mown down by a hit and run driver in Spain has made an astonishing recovery.
Rebecca Loynes was hit by a taxi in Campoamor, near Alicante, on December 14 last year, knocking her 35 yards down the road in front of her horrified boyfriend Jim Plimmer.
The 26-year-old was clinically dead for more than one minute, but a passer-by managed to resuscitate her and rushed her to hospital.
The impact left her with serious brain injuries and doctors predicted she may never walk, talk or see again. But despite all the odds, the B&G Locks supervisor is now walking, talking and fully sighted and just weeks aways from being allowed home from Alicante University General Hospital.
Rebecca, who is a former army cadet, has had to have operations removing part of her skull and rebuilding her shattered arm, as well as being treated for a punctured lung and loss of sight following the accident.
Her amazing battle from the brink has resulted in her being nicknamed “macho miracle” by locals in Spain, said her mother Michelle.
The 50-year-old has just returned to the family home in Ravenscroft Road, Willenhall, after being at her daughter’s bedside with father Tony, aged 52, as well as younger sister Stacey, aged 21, for the last six weeks.
“There have even been nurses and nuns coming in just to touch her because they have heard about her miraculous fight back,” said Mrs Loynes.
“She is a very tough girl and they are calling her Macho Miracle.”
Boyfriend Jim, whose family has a villa in Spain, has remained with Rebecca, who needs one more operation to replace part of her skull.
It is hoped she will fly home within weeks and be back in Willenhall for her 27th birthday next month.
