Shackell’s back at Norwich

Tuesday 10th February 2009, 11:36AM GMT.

jason-shackell.jpegWolves have allowed defender Jason Shackell to return to Norwich on loan for the rest of the season.

The £1million August capture from the Canaries goes back to Carrow Road having made just four starts for the Championship leaders.

He has seen his chances decrease further with the arrival of £2.3million centre-back Christophe Berra from Hearts, with 34-year-old Jody Craddock also preferred to the 25-year-old against Norwich last week.

It was a meeting between Shackell and new Norwich boss Bryan Gunn during that 3-3 draw that sown the seeds for the move.

Gunn said: “It’s fantastic to have him back. I bumped into him at Molineux last week, realised that he wasn’t a part of (Wolves boss) Mick (McCarthy)’s immediate plans and it was an opportunity to bring in a quality player, in an area of the pitch we need to get cover.

Shackell added: “I saw and spoke to the gaffer last Tuesday and I’m obviously happy to come back to a place I know so well. I want to play games and it’s a good opportunity for me.”

When are you going to buy a defender that can actually play for Wolves Mick?

What a waiste of time. Suppose he will get a game though then we will bring him back to sit on the bench with Hill and Friend…and probably Berra as Neil Collins will see to that.

    What a joke!

Worth remembering how lucky we are to have Steve Morgan bankrolling our Club well beyond its means.

McCarthy has wasted pots and pots of money on players who have little or no residual value and have signed hugely expensive long term contracts.

Another Million (plus wages sign ons etc) down the drain… or the revenue from 3000 season ticket holders on one player.

Next time someone says ‘get your cheque book out Morgan’ on here etc ..remember – the numbers just dont add up

I just hope Mick gives Berra a better chance to prove himself! i would like to see Mancienne back here but would he fit in now with Berra and Stearman in the centre??? Stearman isnt doing a bad job, few mistakes here and there but overall a quality defender and to pay over 2million for Berra he has to be good so could it work??

To all those who say he wasn’t given a chance – did you ever actually see him play? I saw him in two games and he was dreadful in both. Add that to the away game at Norwich where we conceded 5 and he looks pretty unimpressive.

MM watches him in training every day and considers he’s not good enough. That being the case, I’m glad he’s going back.

Obviously a very bad buy in the first place, but all the talk of ‘not had a chance’ is nonsense.

He was always ever going to be a fringe player. However, I do agree that he had few opportunities to impress due to Mick’s selection policy (if anyone can fathom that out). Less chance of getting Mancienne back now that Scolari has been sacked, Wilkins will not be allowed to make major decisions, especially on player’s movements. Another different Centre-back pairing at Burnley? Craddock and Berra, Stearman needs a rest.

Just be glad that we are not Chelsea throwing money at ageing players in the hope of some silverware.(Oh we tried that a few years ago didnt we!) Yes we are struggling at the moment but we are still top and need to rally around the young team and ensure we stop the rot starting with saturdays game. And we sell Mark Davies to Bolton for £750,000 (figure quoted from Bolton director, not Jez Moxey), who is 20, and will probably make Bolton millions, irrespective of any sell-on clauses.

As a solid defender you would have thought MM would at least got the central defenders playing well and until he does we will not build on our goal difference. I grow so weary of the majority of you prats who call yourselves Wolves fans. Sure, Shackell didn’t get a run in the team, but when our centre-back pairing was playing well at the start of the season, it made no sense to change it, and now we’re at the business end of the season and scrapping for every point we can get, he’s been ABYSMAL whenever he’s had an opportunity. He made Preston’s Sam Parkin look like Torres! Let him go, he’s clearly not going to make it at Wolves and there’s no way in Hell he’d get a look-in if (touch wood) we find ourselves in the Premiership next season. McCarthy is doing an excellent job and is the first to admit when signings don’t work out by getting rid at the earliest opportunity (Eastwood, Elliot, Potter, Ward, Johnson, McIndoe).

For Christ’s sake, it’s whingeing idiots like half of the people posting above who are going to contribute significantly to the wheels coming off this promotion campaign. On Saturday afternoon at the Ricoh we hadn’t played two minutes when a bunch of ‘fans’ behind me started slating our defence and midfield. Absolutely deplorable behaviour.

Can’t see why everyone’s so negative – he goes to Norwich & plays competitive football (whilst they pay some/ all of his wages) which means that if we do need him due to injuries etc he’ll probably be sharper & more match fit than if he stayed at Compton & played reserve matches. If he eventually goes back to Norwich…such is life; I’d expect us to get a fee for him of some sort. he might even come bacl to Wolves as I doubt that Craddock will stay for next season & we’ll still need squad players.

He won’t get a game at Wolves, that’s football and we all move on.

I have been studying the goals we have conceded of late and i believe that Hennessy, is the player most at fault for conceding goals. he is making poor descisions, coming off his line and making poor attempts at stopping goal scoring situations. He is not commanding enough with the back 4 and leaving us in disaray.

He will be a good goalkeeper in a few years but he needs to toughen up a bit and become more of a man and a talker on the pitch.

Find a Goalkeeper that can command the back 4 and we will stop making silly mistakes.

The subsequent loan signing of Mancienne confirmed that ! Yes – a bad buy by MM,which happens (even to the likes of Alex Ferguson) but overall his transfer business has been very good.Kightly,Jarvis,Ebanks-Blake,Foley etc have all improved the team no end…..and they have increased hugely in value.Remember what he first inherited after Hoddle ?? Our back up, as it currently stands, for Berra and Stearman are Collins and Craddock. Collins simply isn’t good enough and never will be and Craddock I’m afraid has seen better days.
McCarthy needs to pull a few rabbits out of the hat in the loan market to freshen the team up particularly in central midfield and possibly another centre back as competition for Stearman and Craddock. Not given a chance. Good solid defender who, if given a run, would not have let anyone down. Berra and Shackell would have been a very solid partnership at this level.

    It’s OFFICIAL

MICK MCCARTHY HAS LOST THE PLOT!

    1 win in 8.
2 DEFENSIVE Midfields on saturday which didnt work the last time Quashie & Henry played.
1Million pound player and he gets sent to Norwich where MM fully endorsed the 4 year contract to that Clown called Neil Collins!

Arms around Andy Keough and a 2 yr extension goes to his “putting in a shift ethic” rather than goals per ratio which is sub standard.
Mark Davies leaves wolves where he was offered a derisory contract!
Chopping and changing a side week after week as he clearly does not know his best line up.
Flitting away more or Morgan’s money!

Wolves are going the same way as Watford. MM managerial credentials are now being scruntised aswell as the business decisions led by Moxey.

What is happening to this season which promised so much…..

Don’t think MM liked the fact that Shackell refered to him as “he” in a recent interview when he was saying he’d waited for his chance, “He (boss Mick McCarthy) could always bring someone in and he’s still got Jody (Craddock).” Plus it assumed that MM would pick him, a fatal assumption, personally I was impressed a couple of years ago when we played Norwich I thought he stood out, MM hasn’t given him a chance which I find very strange. I believe MM pushed him to the edge and when he showed a lack of “respect” then that was it.

This player was scouted and recruited when a member of our squad he does not appear to fit in-Well yes – not given much of a chance but do we really pay 1 million for a player who is-Captain of his squad-Player of the year twice at Norwich—We think he is that bad we are now sending back to a Club that put EIGHT past us this year.

I have to say MM is ridding his luck this is a fiasco and of course Mr S will come back to haunght us———My dream is alive but do not say MM is that good- We have had a good start to the season It is pity but I think his luck is running thin particularly after the last performances.

We need to pull ourselves to-gether stop rating this bunch of players at SUPERSTAR status-They are average players and MM needs to get them doing the basics.

Hi Bill, thanks for your response. I have plenty of time for fellow Wolves FANS, and would also acknowledge in response to your comments that the poor form of certain players and team choices by McCarthy and his management team DO contribute significantly as well.

What frustrates me is that, as many above me have pointed out, everyone must surely agree that we’re better placed to win promotion than we have been for years and if it doesn’t happen this season it’s reasonable to assume that we will be forced to sell some of our brightest young talents (namely Hennessey, Kightly, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, and possibly Stearman). If that happens, we’ll be set back a number of years before we can mount another promotion challenge.

So why why why can’t the fans just unite and get behind the team no matter what? If a player’s having a great game, cheer him. If a player’s having a poor game, cheer him LOUDER. Coax a better performance out of players by vocally supporting them, not slagging them at every opportunity.

As a season ticket holder for nearly 20 years, I have no intention of toddling off, and if home truths are hard for some ‘fans’ to read, perhaps if they who should toddle off.

    Respectfully.

If you believe we are in a profit on transfers then you are sadly deluded about the real world of business and football

My point (8) (which I concede I should have expressed better) is that we are lucky to be bankrolled to a point where Mick can make expensive mistakes such as Shackell AND be in the market for £2m plus players in the January Window.

Throughout January I got tired of reading post from idiots on here saying ‘Get your Chequebook out Morgan’, ‘Show you care’ ‘ I pay £xxx for a Seaon Ticket therefore etc etc’

2 seasons ago (pre Morgan) we were without a parachute payment and truly Potless. 22 seasons ago we were bankrupt and now are a lucky to still have a Club to even write about (Yes I was at Chorley… both times)

Lets be grateful that Mick can afford to make expensive mistakes in one Window and then in the same Season dive into the next Window and spend another £3m in fees, wages, sign ons etc to try again to fill the same position

last major trophy 1980 league cup , maybe but i think they expect to win the champions league every year so their perfect personal lives would be complete , they blame everyone for everything mm ,moxey, morgan , the players , other supporters , the truth, forgive me if im mistaken, is that only five british clubs have ever been good enough to win the (european cup) champions league , celtic, man utd, liverpool, villa, forest , and the national team have only been good enough to reach world cup quarter finals 1990 apart from winning 1966 , 44 years ago , my point is unrealistic expectations are placed on players and teams , by everyone and when they fail, the blame game starts, to win promotion this season would be deserved even if lucky , to survive in the premiership, will require major investment, luck and a massive change in the way supporters think, 102. i dont think your friends up the road are laughing at us , they are crying because they are going to get relegated again . if top 3 win all thier remaining games 104 points/bham 102/wolves115 (refer to my earlier point about unrealistic expectations) . will and always have supported wwfc 100% ,

    Anybody see this article??

While standing around at Molineux chewing the fat last week after the 3-3 draw against Norwich City, one of my colleagues mentioned a character he had invented called ‘Miserable Dave’.

Now Miserable Dave is a Wolves fan. He’s typical Black Country, just to paint a picture for you.

He’s a loyal, hard-working, knows the value of a pound – loves the Wolves. Okay? You can see where we are coming from.
He’s not always been known as Miserable Dave, though. Oh no. He’s only recently been saddled with the nickname.

Only in the last six months when Wolves began to surge clear at the top of the Championship.

Ever since then he’s been waiting for the bubble to burst in an ‘I-told-you-it-wouldn’t-last’ type of way.

So each match that is not accompanied by a three-point haul is met with a raise of the eyebrows and a puff of the cheeks.

It doesn’t matter to Miserable Dave that footballing logic dictates that very few teams outside of the affluent elite have the ability to go through a season without a blip along the way.

No. He knew it wasn’t going to last and he’s told you so.
    It’s an understandable reaction.

You see, seven years ago Wolves were in a similar position, cruising towards the Premier League for the first time when the wheels began to fall off.

At first, it happened so slowly that you didn’t notice it.

I was actually there at Molineux on a sunny Spring afternoon when they lost 1-0 to Grimsby Town in a match they were expected to win comfortably.

There was none of this masochistic streak back then.

It was more a case of: ‘Oh dear.’ The overwhelming feeling was that Dave Jones’ team had accrued so many points that surely it was a case of when, not if, they were going to stroll across the finishing line.

Only Gary Megson’s West Brom had other ideas. You see, they kept winning and narrowed the gap until on the final day of the season, they clinched promotion at Wolves’ expense.

It was horrible for Wolves. It is the the thought of going through that hurt again that has made Dave miserable.

Dave doesn’t want to see the prize dangled before him for nine months, and then taken away at the last minute once again.

    That’s understandable.

But by the same token, if you’d said to him at the start of the season – and don’t forget the bookmakers had made Birmingham City and Reading favourites for promotion – that Wolves would be six points clear of the third-placed side with about one-third of the campaign left to play, then he would have been happy enough.

    What’s the difference?

It’s the expectation that is slowly eviscerating Wolves’ fans. That gut-wrenching feeling that it is happening all over again.

But it’s not. The situation is totally different. West Brom aren’t there for a start.

There’s a different manager and a young group of players that want to progress together.
It would be a shame if Molineux becomes gripped in the kind of fear that appears to be dogging ‘Miserable Dave’.
And that’s because the best way to garner these last nine victories would be to try and allow Mick McCarthy’s players to relax.
There was a joy during the first couple of months of the season when the team was playing with freedom.
They had different angles of attack and were a real handful, let me tell you.
Hopefully, the addition of Christophe Berra will plug a gap in the home defence that has never been truly convincing since the Paul Butler/Joleon Lescott partnership was broken up.
But please Wolves’ fans, don’t fill Molineux with apprehension. It won’t help. Honestly.
In the end it will all be worth it.
For the big grin on Dave’s face, if nothing else

Now lads and lasses, does this remind you of anyone?? or any group of people??

Sorry but this is spot on with Wolves fans at the moment!
