Shackell urged to fight for place
Saturday 7th February 2009, 11:54AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has challenged Jason Shackell to prove his worth and win a place from the logjam of central defenders at Molineux.
The challenge comes as McCarthy ruled out any further move for Chelsea’s Michael Mancienne in the Premier League loan window, which opens again next week.
Shackell has made just four starts since his near £1million move from Norwich last August, coming off the bench a further nine times.
He wasn’t even in the 16 for the last two games, including Tuesday’s 3-3 draw against his former club.
Shackell’s chances of playing have been further compromised by the £2.3million arrival of Christophe Berra, who was expected to make his Wolves debut in the Championship clash at Coventry.
McCarthy said: “Jason has to work hard like everyone else – others have been above him in the pecking order, that’s all.
“He has to be in my plans. Neill (Collins) and Jason were different class against Swansea when they played together. Neill has proved all along that he’s very capable.”
The Wolves boss would have liked to have added Mancienne to the roster too, but Chelsea have ruled out a return for the youngster who shone in a two-month loan spell before Christmas.
McCarthy said: “He’s not going anywhere – they’re keeping him. He’s their player and we can only take him for 28 days anyway.
“That wouldn’t be good because we’d have him for a month and then we’d have to send him back.”

MM in for 28 days will be worth it…
Get him in at start of Feb 28th and send him back 27th March. We have 5 games.
Plymouth H
C.Palace A
Ipswich H
Charlton H
Notts Forest A
Thats 15 points to play for we could do with.
Then we only have todo without him for 6 games till end of season and then we can BUY him when we go up.

I’d take Mancienne for 28 days if for no other reason than stopping Blues, Reading or Cardiff snapping him up!!!!

He has to be in my plans. Neill (Collins) and Jason were different class against Swansea when they played together. Neill has proved all along that he’s very capable.”Here we go again MM And the E&S trying to start another debate to seperate the supporters. When all our undevided attention should be on trying to maintain our promotion push MM spouts utter rubbish. If he really believes that Collins is different class and capable then god help us when we go up.Or is this why Sunderland came straight back down with the worst goals against column (105) in the history of the premiership.

I love the quote from Christophe Berra in the E&S article. “There are some real good characters in the squad and they’re all trying to do one thing – get better individually and get Wolves into the Premier League.”
Isn’t that two things? I hope he’s better at defending than he is at maths! Come on me babbies!

Wolves need a settled defensive unit, not one that has had 15 different combinations so far. Dependant on injuries, we should not see Collins again this season. Foley, Stearman, Berra & Ward. With Shakell and Hill as cover. Quite simple really !

Wouldn’t fancy working for some of you lot, ie posters 1 and 3.
We all know Collins is ‘footballistically challenged’, Collins and McCarthy included. He tries his best, we have nothing better, can’t get better and you want to have a go! Where does that get us?! Try being positive sometimes!

Neill has proved all along that he’s very capable.”If MM really believes this then god help us when we go up.For gods sake Mick stop spouting this rubbish and concentrate on the game ahead 3 points a must today.Regarding the above statement on Neill & Jason this sums up just why Sunderland under MM were relegated with the worst goals against column (105)in the history of the Premiership.

Should have been given a chance against Watford and Norwich! He has never been given a chance to prove himself alongside Stearman!
As for that Collins being more than capable comment he was either hammered when he said it or is delusional!!

Vision express mick thats wot you need.

We need to play Berra and stearman as the 2 in the middle. JUST PLEASE FOR GOD SAKE DONT PLAY COLLINS!!! Shackell is ok as back up but collins needs to go.

So he hasn’t been turning any good performances for the reserves?
Oh yeah there is no reserve team.
How the hell is anyone going to fight for a place when they get 0 game time, whether it’s for the 1st team, reserves?
oh yeah we looked a lot tighter at the back on tuesday without Collins didn’t we !!….good job it wasn’t him who made those mistakes …

Idiot McCarthy !!

I THINK WE HAVE LOST IT WITH THE PROMOTION PUSH, AND WILL FINISH IN THE PLAY OFFS…IF WE DO, IT WILL BE GOODBYE TO ‘MUPPET MICK’ CHRIS, EBANKS, HENRY, FOLEY, WARD, AND HENNERSEY………
Report abuse
I BELIEVE WE SHOULD REST CHRIS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON..HE IS SPENT, AND BRING EBANKS OFF THE BENCH…HE IS TIRED
START LOOKING FOR A COUPLE OF DECENT STRIKERS, OTHERWISE, IF WE ARE PROMOTED IT WILL BE A ONE SEASON WONDER LIKE LAST TIME.
WE ARE NOT PLAYING PREMIERSHIP GRADE FOOTBALL AND SHOULD GET REAL AND BUY IN SOME TALENT VERY SOON. LOOK AT CAHILL OF EVERTON OR JOHNSON OF FULHAM, SOMEONE WITH SOME FLARE AND KNOWS WHERE THE GOALS ARE.
WOLVES HAVE NOT PLAYED WELL SINCE LAST NOVEMBER, AND I AM AMAZED THEY ARE STILL ON TOP, WHICH HAS BEEN SHEER LUCK.
START PLANNING FOR A NEW MANAGER, AS MICK IS NOT THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE PREMIERSHIP

Is Berra slower than Collins
