Rachael truly first lady for Eva role
Wednesday 4th February 2009, 11:45AM GMT.
Evita
Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton
By Stella Stokes
Following in the footsteps of Elaine Paige and Madonna isn’t easy. But rising stage star Rachael Wooding as Eva Peron is a triumph in this compelling Lloyd Webber masterpiece.
The show is so well-directed and slick that audiences will find the complex story of the rise and fall of the Argentinian first lady entirely through music and lyrics easy to follow.
A powerful opening sees Argentina in mourning following the premature death of Eva from cancer before the story picks up from when she was a gutsy actress seduced by powerful men.
Wooding is outstanding in the role portrayed with emotion and conviction, with her vocals a highlight in the Don’t Cry For Me Argentina balcony scene.
Any Dream Will Do finalist Seamus Cullen is technically flawless as Che, while Mark Heenehan as Juan Peron has a great voice and a commanding stage presence.
Nikki Mae as Peron’s mistress gives a beautiful performance of Another Suitcase in Another Hall.
This production is at the Grand until February 14.
