Seven hurt in bus bridge crash

Saturday 31st January 2009, 3:54PM GMT.

BUS 2 EB 31Seven people were injured when a double-decker bus ploughed in a low bridge in the Black Country this afternoon.

A shower of bricks fell to the ground as the bus hit the railway bridge in Corngreaves Road, Cradley Heath, becoming wedged underneath.

Paramedics treated seven at the scene for injuries and crews from Brierley Hill, Cradley Heath and the major rescue unit from West Bromwich were sent to the scene.

Ambulance spokeswoman Claire Thomas said: “We had many emergency calls about this, the first came at 11.54. There are seven walking wounded. An ambulance and an incident support officer were sent to the scene and a non emergency ambulance.” Firefighter Al Partridge from Cradley Heath fire station said: “With all the road works that are going on it looks like the bus may have had to take a diversion and it just got stuck. There were 21 people on board.

He added: “It got under the bridge, it is just the back part that got stuck.”

The accident delayed rail services.
