Players back Carson to bounce back

Nemanja Vidic scores the third goal.

Albion have again rallied around Scott Carson after the goalkeeper’s latest blunder in the 5-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Manager Tony Mowbray and midfielder James Morrison have both given the England keeper ringing endorsements, after his mistake handed United their second goal at the Hawthorns on Tuesday.

The £3.25million summer signing dropped a corner at the feet of Carlos Tevez and the Argentine scored to give United a 2-0 lead just before half-time.

Mowbray said: “I am not concerned because he also made some great saves. I don’t want it to become an issue and I don’t think it is because he makes some great saves.

“He is a young boy who is going to progress in his career. He is not the finished article.

“He wants to be the best goalkeeper he can be and I want him to do that too. I know he has a lot of improvement in him and at this moment he needs my support and he will continue to get that.”

Carson’s error against United came less than a month after a mistake allowed Gabby Agbonlahor score for Villa in the local derby defeat at Villa Park.

But midfielder Morrison insists Carson still enjoys the full support of his team-mates.

Morrison said: “In training it doesn’t come across that he is down. He is a bit of a joker and he has been joking about this week as well.”

Albion’s captain Jonathan Greening has set a target of February 28 for his comeback from a knee injury.

The Baggies skipper has his sights on the trip to Everton as a potential game for his return from a medial knee ligament injury.

Greening is facing the first prolonged injury lay-off of his 14-year career, after injuring his knee against Burnley in the FA Cup last Saturday.
