Wolves defender search continues

Friday 30th January 2009, 11:42AM GMT.

6280290Wolves have refused to rule anything out as news emerged of interest in West Ham defender Calum Davenport.

But the club have confirmed they have  finally entered talks with Hearts over defender Christophe Berra.

Reports of a successful £3million bid for 26-year-old Davenport are untrue, as Wolves have not yet made an offer. But the 6ft 4ins former Tottenham centre-back is one of several central defensive targets the club is eyeing.

Wolves face competition from Sunderland for fit-again Davenport, whose last of just 13 league games for the Hammers since his £3million signing from Spurs two years ago came on Boxing Day.

Berra remains a possibility after Hearts non-executive director Sergejus Fedotovas – also director of the club’s parent company UBIG – flew over from Lithuania.

Fedotovas only tends to get involved in transfer deal and, with Hearts believed to be experiencing financial problems, star assets such as Berra could well leave before Monday’s 5pm deadline.

Hearts are said to want £3million for Berra, while Wolves have offered £2million. Chelsea’s Michael Mancienne remains another possibility.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: “We’re not ruling out anything – we’re working towards Monday’s deadline.”

Boss Mick McCarthy has partly cleared the decks by allowing Darren Ward to join Charlton on loan to the end of the season. But he won’t allow Jody Craddock to leave until he has signed a replacement.

mancienne would be a fantastic signing he played brilliantly for the club when he was with us on loan he was defiantly a fans favourite. i go to most of the home games and when stearman and mancienne played together it looked like a class partnership. so lets hope we can get mancienne in by monday. Keep Craddock and send out Collins and sign someone else – everyones a winner!

Craddock was good enough to start the season and it showed how much we missed him last year when he left so why is he not good enough again now?

I appreciate he isnt getting any younger and isnt the quickest anymore (but neither is collins) but an experienced head may just stop the boat from rocking ……….

Perhaps Collins sending off at reading could be a blessing in disguise. IMO our back four lacks expierience, we now have pace with Stearman so let’s play Craddock alongside him. Problem solved for now!

I’m afraid all we’re still hearing is talk but no actual action!
It’s now Friday and still no positive news just another player leaving the club and no one coming in.
It seems that some fans and the club think that all we need is a central defender and all will be ok. We need more than that! A quality attacking central midfielder and another striker to freshen things up are needed. As I mentioned on Nathan’s blog imagine if Ebanks was to pick up an injury. We would be deep in the mire as Iwelumo is totally out of form, Keogh doesn’t score goals and Vokes although highly promising is umproven still at this level. I’m afraid the clock is fast ticking down to 5pm on Monday. I think we will end up with nothing which im my opinion will be totally unacceptable. I hope that McCarthy, Morgan and Moxey prove me wrong.

All those people who are saying we should spend £2.5 and get him I fear your a bit misguided. He is a great propsect and even if Chelsea accepted an offer people presume a player who has made the England squad and touted as an England future starter, would drop a league………..I cant see it to be honest. The best we can hope for is a loan and if we make it up then we may be a more realistic club for him. Signing a 3 year deal with us when we cant guarantee he’ll be playing Premier stuff next year…………he has to give himself the best chance of playing for England and at the moment it isnt with us. It seems we are being treated to yet another smokescreen entitled “we have tried to sign a top defender but his club wanted too much”. It’s allegedly worth something well over 30 mill to a promoted club so why are we quibbling over a couple of million now? We do need to splash the cash to add a bit of quality. When I think of the Wolves team I don’t feel with have any technically gifted players, they are a bunch of enthusiastic, full of energy tryers. Kightly can’t take freekicks or corners, and SEB and Iwelumo never look as potent as say a Hunt, Doyle or C.Jerome. When Albion played us the season before last, at times they looked awesome. The likes of Kamara, Koumas amd Greening looked to have superb technique. I was also very impressed with Jimmy Kebe for Reading on Tuesday night. That’s the sort of player I feel we are missing, a passer and freekick taker, basically a quality player. Unfortunately I think Mark Davies could well have been this player, but que sera sera.

I feel like a lot of people that we need at least 2 signings, a central defender that does not make as many mistakes as collins and a forward that is able to score goals, because Iwelumo has lost his confidence in front of goal and Keough is more a link man than a goal scorer.

The problems lie with Morgan not keeping his promise over the 30 million he proised to put into the club when Jack Hayward gave it him for £10. I wonder what Jack thinks of him not keeping his promise to his beloved Wolves. Imagine we got to the premiership, he could then sell the club for say £100 million + and make one hell of a profit out of us, with hardly putting a penny into the team. So I say Morgan show the colour of your money before the fans wake up to the biggest con trick ever. If Morgan really cared he would put big money into the club now, as at the time of writing we have made more money out of transfers in the window than we have shelled out, is that a club going all out for promotion.

I don’t like talking up Albion but one of the main reasons they got promoted last season was due to them having a superb midfield for the championship and they all chipped in with goals on a regular basis.

Wolves must look an attractive option to Mancienne. He would command a great salary and essentially be guaranteed to be playing Premiership football next season unlike at Chelsea where he is number 3 or 4 in the pecking order.
The agents are probably pushing it as well as they dont get paid unless there is a transaction.
Asking price is probably stumbling block but I think anything under 10 million would be fair to both Wolves and CHelsea.
Lets face it, if he’s as good as we think he is we will be selling him in a few years anyway as we did with Joleon.

All wolves fans can see the problem, a pacey forward gets the ball in that channel on our right side and no-one is quick enough or big enough to get under them and stop it.
This problem will again be exploited over the remaining games unless Morgan, McCarthy & Moxey start thinking like Premiership management, otherwise we will be cannon fodder should we be lucky enough to make it.

(60, bb1957)i agree. we’ve never gone for the very best. Be it players or managers. i remember back in ’76 writin to the club sayin ‘go get Cloughie’. They got Chung! 2years later he’s won the league an Euro cup on peanuts! What if eh? In late ’95 when Taylor was sacked i said ‘get O’Neill from Norwich. He’s fallen out with Robert Chase (chairman)and is lookin for a club to match his ambition. theirs a spark,an aura about him few people have.’ So we get McGhee from Leicester!! Leicester appoint O’neill. 6 months later they’r promoted & go on to win 2 league cups. In the early 70′s we were only 2 or 3 players short of winning the title. McGarry signs the likes of Farley, Jefferson, Shaw, Oldfield, Gould,O’Grady while at Derby Clough goes for David Nish, Colin Todd, Archie Gemmil & Terry Hennessey. A year later they’re Champions. In ’77 we go up with Forest. Chung gets Daniel, Rafferty, Bradshaw etc. all decent but not top drawer. Cloughie gets Kenny Burns, Shilton, Gemmill, McGovern etc. They conquer europe. To understand why the club has failed you have to look into the past to see the fundamental flaws going way back to the idiot John Ireland in the 60′s to the idiots Hayward/Moxey in the present. Will Morgan turn it around and lay the foundations for REAL sustained success? Well its too early to say. But having been bought up watching Shankley’s Liverpool he should know the core values & what it takes. I wish him well.

Do you really think Wolves fans pay for there season tickets to dream that one day we’ll have a great start to a season like this, just to be DISSAPOINTED by the TOTAL LACK of ambition shown by MORGAN and the board ??

He payed 10 quid for OUR beloved club, promising 30 million investment ! WHERE IS HE INVESTING THEN ???

    he’s spent LESS than we’ve recieved !

I could of given Sir Jack a tenner, no i could of doubled that and give him 20 and promised investment once were in the premier…

Can anybody PROVE ME WRONG and tell me where any of that 30 million has been invested ?

This is the BEST opportunity weve had to make investments count for years SO WHY ISNT HE ??

And dont tell me the players are’nt there ! Sonko, Berra, shittu to name a few just in defence would come if we offerd DECENT MONEY and DECENT WAGES !

Were top of the league ! surley quashie isnt the only player we can attract?

74 I agree we should be taking 6 points from the next two. In fact we should take 9 points from the next three but I think that our defence will cost us big time in these games unless we rectify the problem now! We also look poor in midfield at the moment and we need a decent attacking central midfielder to feed the strikers when our wingers are getting double marked.
In my opinion if we get a quality centre half and quality attacking central midfielder we shoould get top two. If we don’t we will struggle to make the top two which would be a disaster after being top for most of the season.
Come On Morgan, Moxey and McCarthy the next couple of days are hugely important. If we have to pay over the odds for two quality players so be it. It could mean the difference between promotion this year or more misery at the end.

80 CHRIS. I meant his sons not so much Jack himself. Just got in from a hard day at work! Sorry. But Jack has to take a lot of blame for not overseeing his investment more. When he sat in the stand at PVale near the end of 89/90 we were 8th. Countless millions later at the end of 05/6 we were 7th. If you had taken over a business in the city & 16 years later you had missed all your targets & were still at Square 1 what would your shareholders think? Sorry but it is failure on a spectacular scale. Jack Walker took over Blackburn 2 yrs later & went up in his 1st season and won the Prem title 2yrs after that. They’ve been in the Premier every year bar 1 since & also won the League Cup. Why did Walker achieve so much for a similar investment at a smaller club? Because he was there every day keeping people on their toes. I love Jack as much as any fan. The club’s infrastructure he improved greatly. Stadium & training facilities? fantastic. But he tolerated apathy on the field & it ruined his years with us. When the dust has settled on the Hayward years the historians will say he failed & missed a golden chance to add to Cullis’s success, to rejoin the elite at the dawn of the Premier League. He failed where it matters most. On the pitch.

    The Usual Suspects

Yadder Yadder Spend £30M Steve Morgan has no ambition?

One common theme running through the lack of better quality players must be between Moxey and MM

Before anyone starts banging on about – Wim Top of the league blah blah just look at how many centre backs we have with no pace (that we have bought) – Surely there are players out there in any of the leagues that have pace and potential? & are a better prospect than mssrs Collins D Ward and Shackell?

As for Prem quality players – How many want to make the step down (unless they are young reserves) or would prefer (fringe players) to stay and fight for a place (which means for some pick up my wages and who cares)- It has been reported that Marlon Harewood doesnt want to make the step down to the Championship!

Taking off the MM tinted specs for a second; If the likes of Vokes and other players who cant get a regular game ahead of Keogh Collins etc – MM’s rep for his “selective” selection process must be “common knowledge” in the world of football in the UK – My fear is that when promoted; Will MM “Buy in bulk” ala Sunderland promotion or does he have the “nouse” to attract the better quality players that could assist us in the Prem?

Back to present day events – Stearman is a good buy that needs a defensive partner that has quality – not necessarily super fast

We should have moved forward the moment Mancienne was called back by Chelski – looking more for a wiser head with some pace that can blend with Stearman into a partnership

We brought in Shackell – Young & hungry – But does he have any pace? Is he good enough? Has he really been given a chance? How must he feel after signing on for and buying into MM’s game plan – only to find that Collins can do no wrong? (When the lad Collins was doing ok fine but when he starts dropping clangers regularly?)

Finally; Is JM following up on a list of players drawn up by MM or is JM “trimming off” certain names from MM’s list, & handing back JM’s list of “budget players”? & Have these players been scouted thoroughly (not just a knee jerk reaction)

PS IF we bring in additional players – lets just hope they are an improvement to the squad and not just potential “bench warmers”

    UP THE WOLVES!

I also note with interest that McCarthy has put part of the blame for our recent run of poor results down to ‘strikers panicking in front of goal’ astounding absolutely astounding, could that be due to the fact that we have only been playing with one striker & one clown up front recently.

My answer is simple McCarthy, play the man who is used to scoring & reignite the best striking partnership in the divison, not the boy who is usless!!!!

If Moxey is so savvy why are you so selective in the deals that you refer to? Why no mention of Frankowski, the failure to get any money on Miller,or more pertinent to today why under bid for Berra in the summer, waste £1m on Shackell and then bid the market price for Berra 5 months later. How much will we lose on Shackell? Thanks Chris (98), but i am only stating what we all know i suppose. there are other examples of clubs who have progressed on the field under rich owners while we havn’t. Boro(Gibson), Wigan(Whelan),P,mouth(Manderic). Then there’s Bolton & Fulham. Even Reading have had more seasons in the Prem than us! Also we havnt even won an ‘automatic’ promotion in 18yrs! Even WBA have managed 3 in their last 4 attempts! But having said all that we can only hope Morgan has analysed & identified the reasons for this failure and is planning a way forward on the pitch different to the Hayward model. As i said, you have to look at the past and learn from it otherwise the humiliation will continue. Sir Jack deserves credit though for keeping us in English hands & Morgan is a football fan so knows the game. I feel we have been given another chance so I dont want to see Wolves ruin another potentially bright future.

Who said there couldn’t be any deals on Sunday? To my knowledge these deals went through yesterday: Shay Given [Newcastle Utd > Man City], Theofanis Gekas [Bayer Leverkusen > Portsmouth], Tal Ben Haim [ Man City > Sunderland] and Chris Killen [Celtic > Norwich].

The reason for waiting is that you can often get a better price once the seller knows it’s now or never. (So long as you’re not panicking more than he is, of course!)

And for gods sake, we’ll probably get Berra, so instead of mancienne, get a Central Midfielder in!!!!!!!!!!
