Shackell’s off for Jason
Friday 30th January 2009, 3:52PM GMT.
Wolves’ forgotten man Jason Shackell admits he’s been in an unfamiliar place over the last few months.
Not that the near £1million signing feels alienated by his relatively new team-mates – far from it. In fact, several of his colleagues feel his frustration just as deeply.
It’s just that after four years of virtually unbroken regular football at Norwich, Shackell has found himself on the outside looking in. At the age of 25, that’s not an ideal scenario.
But the former Canaries skipper is hoping to take what he hopes is another big chance against Watford, with Neill Collins starting a two-match ban for his dismissal at Reading on Tuesday.
Shackell said: “It’s the first time in a few years I’ve been sitting out a lot. But this is a big club with a big squad and when the boys are doing well, there’s nothing I can say.
“If I do well, hopefully I’ll get a run of games because that’s the only way I’m going to be able to force my way in. That’s what I’ve got to do for myself but I just want to the boys to win.
“I haven’t started many games and it’s quite tough to keep yourself match-tough and match-sharp and to be ready when you’re not playing. The Preston game was a bit of a wake-up call for me to tell me I wasn’t quite right.
“So I had half a game in the reserves just before Middlesbrough and I went into that game feeling better, fitter and sharper. I thought I performed better and was fairly happy.
“I’ve played a couple of games recently – one not so good against Preston, and one where I performed a little bit better against Middlesbrough. I’m waiting for my next opportunity – whenever it may be.
“The aim is to string a few games together and hopefully I can do a good job. Fingers crossed, I might get an opportunity but you never know. He (boss Mick McCarthy) could always bring someone in and he’s still got Jody (Craddock).
“I’ll keep my head down and hopefully I can get the shout. I’ll be waiting and, if I do get the opportunity, I’ll make sure I’m ready to take it.”
Shackell has found patience is a virtue as he has been forced to wait for his chance. He admits the dressing room banter has helped keep him going.
He said: “I’m not the only one – there’s a big squad here and so quite a few boys not playing. But it’s a team game and we’re a squad and everyone is keeping everyone else on the ball.
“The main thing is the team is doing well and Wolves are winning games – it’s not about me as an individual or anyone else.
“We need to make sure we really push on so we finish the season strongly.”
Level-headed Shackell never expected to walk straight into the team, despite the fee and his higher profile at Carrow Road.
He said: “When I signed (in August), the boys were unbeaten and that run continued. It hasn’t really halted all the time I’ve been here.
“Being selfish I want to play games but I want the team to do well. I’m doing my bit in training and waiting, and trying to grab those opportunities when they come up.”
Shackell insists the healthy team spirit means there will never be any players wishing ill on another – just encouragement.
He said: “The lads all want each other to do well here – that’s one of the reasons the boys have done so well. Everyone gets on and they all want the best for each other.”
Shackell expressed his sympathy for Collins, who has been under the spotlight again after scoring an own goal at Reading on Tuesday night before his sending off.
The former Norwich defender said: “I felt for him and maybe it was a bit harsh. We’ve spoken and he’s frustrated.
“I’m not 100 per cent sure what he said, but you see it on TV with players having a go and, half the time, the ref will just calm the situation down and that’s the end of it.
“I feel for him, because I thought he did very well the other night. Even for the goal, the ball could have gone anywhere. You can go into depth about any goal – it’s never just one person’s fault.
“It’s normally a multitude of errors. Neill was just unfortunate in that he got his head to it and 99 times out of 100 that wouldn’t have looped up over Wayne.
“But Neill’s a good lad who will get his head down and be back before you know it.”
Wolves have gone five league games without a win but Shackell stressed the mood was hardly all doom and gloom.
He said: “We’re still two points clear,. It’s a fine line between getting the right result. We were very close to holding on at Bristol after a good performance and we had a good win against Birmingham in the FA Cup.
“It’s definitely not all doom and gloom – we’re all positive.”

He is a very good player but needs to play to get continuity.MM will always play Collins even in goal if we were short of a keeper.I wonder if anyone has noticed that since MM made Jones a fringe player we dont win games anymore.

This guy must be wondering what he has done wrong to have Collins playing ahead of him. Lets see if he can put a good shift in tomorrow.

I agree, Jones gets the ball out wide early on to Jarvis/Kightly in space. With Henry/Edwards they receive the ball facing their own goal with two players on them.
I fear another Henry/Quashie midfield tomorrow.

he can save us a few million pounds if he performs and becomes a regular. But clearly Mick isn’t too keen on him so who knows.
It really is about time we got this central defence sorted. Craddock will still do a job for us but if mot spend the money to get quality. Surely we can afford it.
Big big day tomorrow. We really need to get the points but Watford beat Burnley….how do these things happen???????? Qpr smashed Blackpool and Doncaster beat Sheffield Utd. why can’t life be simple….Wolves always win and the rest don’t. Not much to ask is it?

Is he any good though? I know he’s not had many opportunities but he’s hardly set the world alight when he has played. I’m not convinced – bring in Davenport and Mancienne

Please………if there is a God, let Shackell have two consecutive man-of-the-match performances (Please, Please….).

GET shittu/berra and mancienne (he was at the wolves training ground 29/1/09 for a 5 mil deal), a centre mid dunno who maybe mark davies back on loan or jason koumas/michael brown and please please get marlon harwood/danny welback or ross mccormack from cardiff because iwelumo is a half season wonder.

Just remember who his centre half partner was against preston ……COLLINS!!!!!!!!!!! would have been better off with wolfie.

1. although I know where your coming from the fact is we stopped winning and started looking nervous at the back as soon as Mancienne was recalled. Im not going to slag any player off but im sorry as long as Moxey is in charge of the purse stings we will never make any major signings. £30 investment what a joke!

Errm except the last 5 league games Jason when you should have been in the side ahead of Collins !! Im not a Collins basher but even I can see that the lad struggles at this level. Would be agood League 1 player tho – sign him up GT !!

1. Geoff Bull – Yes, I’ve noticed that the omission of Jones, for whatever reason, co-incides with our inability to win games. We need another winning streak, no draws, starting tomorrow of say – 5, 6 or even 7 games (just like the previous two occasions this season) – and I think we’ve cracked it.

COME ON JASON SHOW MICK WHAT YOU CAN DO,YOUR A GOOD PLAYER AND DESERVE TO BE IN THE TEAM.

never been given a chance a very good player at norwich not a bad player over night, needs to play with steaman not that muppet collins, but muppet mick do not like him for some reason.so why buying him if not going to play him.what he had 4/5 starts a bit of a bad joke, none with steaman.

I believe that he should bring in Jody Craddock tomorrow, but I know MM won’t. However, I’m not into slagging players off either, and whenever they cross the white lines in a gold shirt they have my full vocal support.
I also believe it is wholly wrong of us to slate MM for picking whoever when we are top of the league, and I believe we can be still top come May.
However, I hope and pray that Michael Mancienne, Christophe Berra and Callum davenport will all be in come Monday because then we can let Darren Ward and Jody craddock move on with our blessing.
Neil Collins is limited, but young and keen. He is not comfortable on the ball, but he is powerful in the air. He would however be reasonablee reserve cover for the 3 names above and Stearman.
We need to do the right deals for the club, and bring in premiership quality defenders asap. Bluntly if we do go up, Collins is not capable of playing at that level – but nor is Shackell. If we had Berra, Mancienne, Davenport and Stearman we might be in with a chance – especially if we could get Murray fit for the premier league.
Support the lads, back the Man who has put us top of the league, and lets get 3 points tomorrow! Come on you Wolves.

Thank the lord Shacks is in and Collins is out.

i have it on VERY VERY VERY good information that this evening a 2million pound deal has been made for “somebody”.
finally! we’ve bought someone!

If Wolves played American Football Neill Coliins would be fantastic! Bring him on at corners and free kicks, JOB SORTED! BUT! ask him to defend and play 90 minutes = accident waiting to happen.
Sorry but HE AINT GOOD ENOUGH MM, OPEN YA EYES.

1. Yeah, Dave Jones was that bit a quality we need in the middle of the park, Karl Henry is class but Jones posed an attacking threat so Iwelumo and SEB could create space which made us such a potent force earlier this year.
Hopefully we get Jones back in the team because I think he will be the difference between automatic promotion and play offs.

Shackell to play a blinder MOM, MM declares he’s the answer to our problems JM happy with squad no need to spend Super offer on earlybird and life in the garden is all rosy again.

What is it with managers going all out for signings and then NEVER playing them. You think MM is bad. What about Robbie Keane at Liverpool?

On the hearts web site berra is at wolves today to agree personal terms and will not play today in the SPL

Good luck Shackell!
Prove your two cents worth son. :)

Well the logical thing would be to bring him in for Collins, but no thick mick had a better idea and decided to bring in craddock instead…*cough*
