Fatal attack may have been filmed
Friday 30th January 2009, 8:38PM GMT.
The fatal attack on Lichfield man Michael Eccles may have been captured on video, police have said. They believe there may be mobile phone footage of the assault.
Mr Eccles was attacked outside his home in Weston Road on Sunday night as he returned from buying a bottle of wine at a shop in Dimbles Lane. The 43-year-old father-of-five died in hospital the next day.
Chief Inspector Ricky Fields said: “The inquiry team are aware of suggestions that have been circulating in the area that some of the incident might have been captured as video, possibly on a mobile phone.”
He said the suggestions were being investigated and urged anyone with information to come forward.
Police are also keen to contact the driver of a white van who attempted to come to Mr Eccles’ aid on Sunday evening.
Ch Insp Fields said: “At around 8pm on Sunday a white van drove slowly along Weston Road, away from Dimbles Lane, passing the point at which Mr Eccles was lying injured on the ground. The van then stopped and the driver got out and assisted.”
The driver is white, in his mid-30s, and was wearing square-rimmed glasses and a blue, yellow and brown jumper. The van is believed to have been an Iveco Daily or a similar vehicle.
Two men and a woman in a Ford Fiesta also stopped at the scene and police are keen to trace them.
On Wednesday Carl Keatley, aged 20, of Greencroft, Lichfield, and a 15-year-old boy, were remanded in custody charged with Mr Eccles’ murder.
