Bullldozers poised to demolish chapel

CHAPEL EB 30An historic chapel built 134 years ago in the Black Country could be demolished over safety fears. The once well-kept site in Bloxwich is now an eyesore after vandal attacks.

One chapel at Field Road was bulldozed several years ago, but the surviving chapel, which has a graveyard covering 16 and a half acres, has since fallen into disrepair and become a magnet for yobs. It was closed for funeral services and used as store for grounds maintenance and equipment for a period, but now Walsall Council is considering sending in the bulldozers.

Unless a new use can be found for it by the borough’s bereavement services department, it faces demolition.

Nearby Ryecroft Chapel is already being flattened, and a campaign is under way to save Bentley Chapel.

A consultation over the future of the Bloxwich chapel runs until April. Ideas will be welcomed at a meeting of the Local Neighbourhood Panel on Monday at Forest Arts Centre, Hawbush Road, at 6pm.

The chairman of the panel, Councillor Ian Robertson, said: “It is a much-loved site for many people in the area and this will give them the chance to have their say about it, as it is a very sensitive issue.

“Like the Ryecroft Chapel which has been demolished, it is in a dilapidated state and demolition is one of the options, but we are respectful of people’s feelings about it and we want their feedback before any final decision is made.”

A report to be delivered to the panel says the demolition of the building would bring an immediate saving for the council, which is aiming to cut spending by £12.8 million this year.

Ryecroft Chapel is currently being demolished and the Books of Remembrance relocated to Streetly Crematorium.

And the future of 108-year-old Bentley Cemetery Chapel is currently being reviewed for demolition or revamp.

The consultation period runs until March 31, and ideas are now being sought for the building, which has also been attacked by vandals and is boarded up.
