Wolves in pole position for Berra

Thursday 29th January 2009, 11:41AM GMT.

berra2.jpegWolves are in pole position to land Hearts defender Christophe Berra and are hopeful their offer will be accepted.

The Molineux club’s £2million bid is the only one on the table for Berra. Sources reckon Hearts officials are meeting to discuss the swoop for the Scotland international.

The Tynecastle club want £3million for one of their star assets, but have seen efforts to attract rival offers hit the buffers despite calls to Everton, Portsmouth, Bolton and Sheffield United.

Sunderland have also joined the chase but are believed to have another preferred choice. That leaves Wolves in pole position to land the Jambos captain, who turns 24 on Saturday.

Difficulty in contacting Hearts’ Lithuanian power brokers has led to Wolves remaining extremely cautious on the prospects of the deal.

In any case, they are ploughing on with other potential deals – including the prospect of Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne returning to Molineux.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: “We’re keeping our options open.”

A couple of outgoing deals could also hinge on the Berra transfer. Out of favour centre-halves Jody Craddock and Darren Ward are keen to get first team football and could leave on loan.

Wolves have until 5pm on Monday to complete their transfer business.

Do some people need reminding of where we are in the league when they make their Mad Mick or Muppet Mick comments? Are they not happy that we’re top of the league at this stage?

I’ll admit, Collins is not the best CB in the league, but compared to what I’ve seen of Shackell, he’s Rio Ferdinand. At the moment, he’s the best we’ve got, so get behind him and the rest of the team.

After the Doncaster match, I looked at our fixtures and said we’d be lucky to be top after the Reading game. We are and now 4 of our next 6 matches are at home and in those matches and on these message boards, that I’m sure some of the players read, we need to be 100% behind the lads.

If you’ve got nothing positive to say, say nothing!!!!

Id rather be top at the end of the season than now. Being top in Feb mean nothing! It matters at the end.

7 wins is all that is really needed but its been 7 wins since boxing day. People are understandably nervous and worried. If we had won at Brisol and Blackpool we would of been 9 games from promotion. 9 out of 17 looks better than 11 out of 17.

I have a feeling 3 teams will get above 90 points this year!

So keep cheering the boys on, whoever is playing! 2 this week and that leaves us with 5 wins! And beat Cov, well then thats down to eight wins! It could all be decided on the last day, I dont mind being 3rd on last day and a point behind blues or level on points. They have Reading away and we have donny at home! IT AINT OVER TILL ITS OVER!

Granted we’re not playing as well as we have done but we are FOUR POINTS CLEAR of Brum for automatic promotion and you get some idiots saying MM and Moxey should be sacked!!! With comments like that you can see why other sides supporters laugh at us sometimes.

We do need a central defender and I will question the decisions if we fail to acquire one come Monday night. But please, don’t lets get hysterical and put things in perspective. I’m sure the Bluenoses would still swap their position with ours.

Bob wolf – thats the thickest post ive read in ages……

I am a bit annoyed at the club for now almost having to rush transfers through for Monday. We should have had contingousy plans in place for the start of the window. No offence to Collins but most fans knew if Macienne was injured or suspended we didnt have quality cover for him. For this reason I think we need 2 defenders in in case of injury. I would not ideally have Collins even on the bench. Its not his fault and he does try but he isnt good enough for this league.

I also think Ebanks and Iwelumo need a kick up the backside, Vokes needs a start. I would also drop Kightly on Saturday and play Reid as he hasnt looked anywhere near the player for months now and at times he looks like a pre madonna…….I hope he gets his magic back soon but Reid looked handy against Boro and actually ran at players like kights used to do.

Overall, we are in a great position but we need to strengthen at the back and sharpen up at the front. Fairly obvious isnt it when we have taken 3 points from 18…………….

But we have some really winnable away games Derby, Forest, Sheff Weds, Barnsley. Then some games we could something out of on a good day Coventry, Burnley, Palace. Blues away I would gladly take a point. Only 3 games at home we will have to be at our best… Cardiff, QPR and Ipswich. All other “should” be an easy 3 points. This article is purely a comment passed by E&S without anything added from the club from yesterday. It says Wolves are the only known (to the E&S) club to have an offer on the table for Berra and that the offer is a million short of the asking price (I thought Jez liked to keep fees undisclosed, but clearly he has publicised this offer to the press).

We are being described as ploughing on trying to get the Mancienne deal together. But remember, since we last had Mancienne he has since been in an England squad and his profile has been raised a fair bit. He’s not an unknown kid.

I don’t want to pour water on any of this excitement as with Mancienne in the defence Wolves go up, with Collins we don’t (it really is that simple), but I for one am going to wait and see.

How can some of you say shackell isn;t good enough whats he started 3/4 games 1 agasint boro prem oposition ya can’t judge him by any seeing him in a few games. As much as I want to see Neill Collins prove he is a decent CB it just isn’t gonna hapen and I think agaisnt reading it summed him up completely. Yes Collins does score goals and has got us a share of points but put that against how many goals which were his fault and points he has cost us (Preston, Bristal City, Reading to name a few). Shackell cannot be compared to Collins and definatly isn’t any worse then him. Critise Shackell when he has had a good run in the team.
Stearmen doesn’t look confident along side Collins as he did with Mancienne his game has got worse along side Collins.
Berra never saw him play just heard the hype lets just hope if we do sign him he adapts pretty damn sharpish to this league.

How Mick can select Collins ahead of Shackell is beyond me. He pays £1m for a defender, and then plays a man who last year broke the world record for number of penalties conceded.

Then his other favourite Ward is replaced by the pace-man Jarvis, so he creates a role for him at full back.

And now, when Iwelumo can’t win a thing in the air and gives away foul after foul, he plays Keogh rather than Vokes, who wins everything in the air, holds the ball up well and scores goals. If you play with 2 wingers who put balls into the mixer, get the big man on the end of them!!

It’s time to draw a line under the season now and look forward to the task ahead. In my book, even if Blues average 2 points per game (championship form) from now on they will achieve 89 points. Your falling for it again, the window is nearly closed and we have supposedly made a couple of million (Davis)and spent nothing,Mr Morgans wallet still hasnt been opened.People are saying were top of the league,,we are,but we are going backwards, our management are happy to have 26000 buying tickets every week,in the championship,no premiership players to buy,no premiership wages to pay,no need to spend any money.Well they should be happy because we wont be going up,in a couple of weeks we will be out of the top two,and we will get beat in the play offs.

If Collins (after his suspension)and Shackell are our 1st choice cb’s for the rest of the season we will miss out in the playoffs! Don’t know much about this Berra (but he experienced and is the right age, and must be a big improvement on either of those two). If we don’t get him, I would love to get Mancienne back and pair him with Stearman. Also I think we need some more firepower up front as Iwelumo and Ebanks Blake have gone off the boil, cheap option could be Mifsud from Coventry.

Have to agree. Ive been saying for years. This club under the guidance of moxey has no ambition. Thats why MM is manager. They are happy to be competing for a play off place, but do they really want wolves to go up? No, I don’t think they do. We scratch around for players nearly all of which are poor to fair, none are real quality good enough for the premiership.

If you think back to the days when we had Keane and Lescott, now they were quality and we have no one that comes close in this squad.

I’m happy to have a bet we wont go up this year, but MM will be in charge next, and the endless monotony of championship football will roll on .

Berra….Haven’t seen him play but if he was any good Rangers or Celtic would have bought him before now. Three international caps with the competition he faces for those positions doesn’t fill me with confidence nor does the fact that Mcleish is in the market for a centre back and Berra isn’t on his radar and he will have seen plenty of him. Could be wrong but circumstantial evidence is pretty convincing and thats all we have if we haven’t seen him play!

Bob Wolf said: Jan 29th, 2009 at 12:42 pm TelfordWolf – I take it you weren’t there on Boxing Day against Sheffield when Ward and Collins were playing and Mancienne on the bench? Despite Ward getting ripped apart, it took him an hour to replace him. That is why Mick should be sacked.

RichWolves – Reid is useless. Yes, he put in a good shift about Boro but I remember his crossing landing in the front row of the stand!!

Shamrock – we are top now, but won’t be come the end of the season. I’ve seen the failure under Taylor, McGhee and Jones from this position.

    Mick out!!

Hi Bob, i feel i have to chime in here!

I was there on boxing day, Mancienne was out of the team that day having been suffering from a virus that was going round at the time, he was on the bench because of his commitment to carry on playing. This virus also effected Stephen Ward who (foolishly i will admit) wore his heart on his sleeve and played on when he possibly shouldnt have. I would love to see you play football against one of the nippiest wingers in the league when you cant keep your bowels in check!

We are top of the league because we deserve to be top of the league. There are 23 other teams in that division that would bend the earth to be there, show some support you muppet. Dont get me wrong, i agree with getting collins out as quick as possible, but if you were a proper supporter you’d show support to anyone who wore gold and black.

As for your “Mick Out, Ince In” ideas. Where are you getting the idea that ince would finish the job when part of the reason he was sacked from his role at blackburn is because he kept crippling his players on the training pitch? Becuase that is exactly what we need, SEB, Iwelumo, Kights, Jarvo and Foley out cuz your manager cant differentiate between training ground and his midfielder days from 10 years ago!

Well, I admit that I was caught up in the euphoria and started to believe that Wolves had altered their business plan and were going to take the riskier route into the Premiership.

Now it is obvious that nothing has altered and in a few weeks time we will be in 3rd place and then struggling to make the playoffs.

The killing that Mr Morgan will make over the close season as we sell our cream is mind-blowing, I estimate that Mr Morgan could turn his £1 investment in Wolves into £20M at least, possibly more.

Go to google and type in ‘spl highlights’ to get a look at Berra in action. Don’t know who Scottish wolf is but you only have his word for it that he is a ‘Scottish wolf’. Whereas if you check out the highlights you can make your own mind up. SW is entitled to his opinions, but the majority of fans up here believe Berra is the best centre half to come out of Scotland in a long, long time. As for Celtic or Rangers, both have expressed an interest, but ‘Mad Vlad’ hates them with a vengeance and wouldn’t give them a heat of his poop on a cold winters night.

Sign Berra, sign Davenport, then we dont need Mancienne. Yes Mancienne is a very good defender, but looked average against birmingham at home and avergae against QPR away, Stearman was class against the Blues and QPR so why waste 3million on Mancienne when clearly a premiership proven defender like Davenport, and by far Hearts’ best player Berra, would be better.

Kightly needs a few games on the bench to regain his desire and hunger on the pitch.

He needs to play Kyle Reid, because he too is pacey, and works hard and played really well against Middlesborough.

And for all the Albion fans out there, next season is our turn in the Premier League. But this time we will show you how its done.

Sack mick? Who sacks their manager when they are top of the league????? PPPLLLEEEAAASSSEEE!!!!

Some of you have spent too long on Champ Manager. You speak about “Sign this player,” or “sign that player,” etc. You forget some things that happen in the real world. these include:-

    1. the team owning the player has to want to sell.

    2. the player has to be better than who he is replacing.

    3. What will the signing do to dressing-room morale. (Is he a “Big-time Charlie,” etc.)

    4. Will he hit a goal-drought, patch of indifferent form, etc just like some of our existing players are doing at the moment.

    5. Do you know more than Mick as to who is any good or not. (The answer to that is probably, “NO.”)

    6. Does he fit in well with the method of play where he is at, but might not at Wolves.

    7. Does he want to come.

    8. After his first game that he is not world class will you lot boo him, and insist he be dropped, sold, and replaced with a new player of your choice.

Let’s get behind the players and manager we have. After all, they have gotten us to the top of the league.
