Heritage cash funds historic site revamp
Thursday 29th January 2009, 11:28AM GMT.
A leading heritage site in Lichfield will be refurbishing its exhibition thanks to a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The cash award coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Erasmus Darwin House museum, in Beacon Street, in the city. Museum manager Alison Wallis said: “It is so exciting to be able to update the museum in this special year. We have learnt so much in the past 10 years that we want to reward our visitors with an excellent experience.
“The museum has established itself as an important part of Lichfield’s heritage.
“Now with 10 years experience behind them, the Foundation who run the museum, believe it is the right time to improve the display.”
Erasmus Darwin House opened in 1999 as a museum dedicated to informing the public about the life and achievements of the grandfather of well-known evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin, the genius Erasmus Darwin.
He was a founder member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham and was way before his time with his thoughts on education for women, the treatment of illness and the theory of evolution.
He expressed his views in his books and poetry which led to him being considered as one of the greatest literary figures of the 18th century.
It is anticipated the refurbishment will take place in June with the grand opening early in July.
Jenny Arthur, chairman of the foundation, said: “Without the Heritage Lottery Fund grant and support from other local funders and individuals this project would not be able to go ahead.
“This is going to be a very exciting year for Erasmus Darwin House.”
The site is open from Thursday to Sunday between midday and 5pm, last admission is 4.15pm.
