Parking charge plan scrapped
Wednesday 28th January 2009, 11:29AM GMT.
Controversial plans to charge residents living near Wolves’ Molineux ground £10 a year for guaranteed parking spaces outside their homes have been officially scrapped.
Wolverhampton City Council’s ruling Tory cabinet admitted defeat, saying the Liberal Democrat group effectively blocked the plan after it was thrown out at a December council meeting. Liberal Democrats said it was unfair to penalise people for living by the ground. Tory councillor Paddy Bradley told last night’s cabinet meeting: “I suppose you could say that democracy has won the day.
“I was told at the full council meeting that this yearly parking charge was not wanted, so I have to accept it.
“I admit defeat gracefully on this occasion.
“It is a shame but the Liberal Democrats took a view and there is nothing I can do about it.
“Unfortunately, we have to scrap the idea.”
Plans also proved unpopular with residents who live near the ground, according to feedback to the council over the last few months.
People who live by the stadium in Waterloo Road want parking permits to stop football fans clogging their streets but do not want to pay for them.
The council says it would have to have a yearly charge if it introduced a scheme so it could pay for itself. It is about to cut £40 million from its budget over the next two years and says fresh investment in parking enforcement around the ground on matchdays is unlikely because of financial pressures.
When Wolves play at home, many fans leave their cars in nearby residential streets, causing residents a headache.
Bob Barratt, head of highways, said: “We will continue with the current arrangements for matchdays around Molineux and hope the parking situation gets better.
“We want to see more intensive enforcement around that area but at the moment that’s all we have.”

“People ..want parking permits … but do not want to pay for them.”
That just about sums up the attitude of these greedy so and so’s.
Who exactly would pay for their parking permits (via council tax)?
Everybody else of course.
I’d love a guaranteed parking spot outside my house but unfortunately the road belongs to all road users so just suck it up Molineux residents or put YOUR hands in your pockets for a privilege that others do not have.
A guaranteed parking spot on a public road.

Very good points Mike. Wolves matches don’t come around that often – 23 home matches plus maybe 1 or 2 in the cup.
So for 24/25 days of the year you don’t get a guaranteed spot outside your house.
Plenty of people have to deal with worse than that and don’t expect others to pay to improve their situation.
Those in Whitmore Reans get the benefit of being right by town, supermarkets, transport links etc.
If residents have their cars parked in the street first, surely there is no problem. So that probably reduces it down even further!

Parking enforcement during match days is just one element of the solution that is required to the massive traffic problem in and around the Chapel Ash area. The problem of traffic congestion, cars cutting through side streets at high speeds especially between Compton Rd & Tettenhall Road is just compounded on match days.
The council have been promising traffic calming solutions (including match day permits) for years. This shouldn’t come at additional cost for the people who live in the area it should be funded by the inflated council taxes we currently pay. I am sure it will take a serious road traffic accident before this plans are considered again.
David/Mr Boyd how do you expect traffic problems in your local area to be funded? Or should we (the people who live by the Molineux) have to pay to save our childrens lives? Get real!

Have any of you ever seen what it was like before the permit scheme was introduced?
The local streets were bumper to bumper and if two cars came from opposite ends there was no place to pull in and give way causing chaos as traffic built up behind them, also not so long before the permits on a match day the fire brigade couldnt get down the street to a house that was on fire and the firemen had to run from the top of the street to help the people out the house not a nice thought especially if it was your family trapped in the house! or would you say never mind at least the footy supporters got to park a few hundred yards closer to the ground and didnt have to walk?
