Meite in line for Hull return
Wednesday 28th January 2009, 12:45PM GMT.
Abdoulaye Meite could hand Albion a much-needed boost by returning from injury in time for the Premier League trip to Hull on Saturday.
Manager Tony Mowbray hopes the Ivory Coast international defender could return to full training tomorrow and might figure on Saturday for the first time since suffering a hamstring strain at Chelsea on Boxing Day.
James Morrison made a surprise return as a substitute against Manchester United while Gianni Zuiverloon started for the first time in a month.
And Mowbray hopes an injury list that featured 11 names at the weekend is beginning to clear.
“I think we’ve come through without any fresh injuries,” said Mowbray. “It’s good for Morrison to get 20 minutes and Zuiverloon got an hour. Hopefully the injury list is going to start sorting itself out over the next week or two.
“I hope that Meite might be pretty close at the weekend, might make the bench – we’ll have to wait and see.
“Going into some important games over the next few weeks we could do with one or two back.”
However, Mowbray admitted the loss of captain Jonathan Greening for up to six weeks with a medial knee ligament strain would be a severe blow for his side.
“Jonathan is a big player for us and he’s a big loss,” said the manager.
“He’s integral to the way we play and he’s a leader for us on the pitch.
“When you lose your leaders out of your football team it becomes more difficult. ou need people to pull together.”
Morrison could return to the starting line-up against Hull on Saturday while Slovakia international Marek Cech is standing by to replace Paul Robinson if Albion cannot overturn his red card against Manchester United last night.
The £1.4m summer signing looks poised for another chance to establish himself in the Albion team just two weeks after he questioned his future after losing his place to Robinson.
Mowbray said: “That’s why Marek is here. He’s here because he’s a good footballer and he’s suffered because of the boy in the team in front of him.
“If Robbo does have a ban, Marek will have a chance to play.”

Dear Keith
I am a west bromwich albion supporter who went to the game against manchester united yesterday. I go to every game at home and most of the away and have done for many years. During my time as a season ticket holder i have never witnessed a refeering performance as bad or a sone sided as the one from MR Rob Styles yesterday. It would not be unfair to describe mr styles performance as simple cheating. So many simple descisions that were quite obvious were given in the wrong direction. This performance echos the comments made by Mr Benitez regarding favouritism and i hope you review the referees performance. In any line of work mistakes should not be rewarded, i fully undertand mistakes can be made by referees but seeing is believeing in this game.
I would very much like a reply
Regards

Sorry Braggies fans, but you are all up in arms for nothing, it will get you exactly nowhere and I will tell you why.
1. The sending off was absoloutly correct
2. It WAS a full on studs up bad challenge
3. It was a worse foul than Ashley Youngs the week before and you Braggies were the first to condemn it, yet you seem to condone Robinson, Why?
4. Youngs red card was not contested by MON, the Villa fans or Young himself, Why? because it was deserved.
5. If that foul had been against you and the player had got away with it, you would have all been on the march to FA HQ
6. Your anger should be directed to Robinson, not Stiles.
Now stop bleating about it and get on with the job of survival.

Hilltop,
Can I first say that WBA are a team I have admired for probably more years than you have been born, they are my second fave team and I would love them to stay up.
I am not trying to be rude or derogatory, I am just putting my personal opinion into this debate, because I thought thats what these pages were for
That said, please dont call me foolish knowing that what I have said is correct.
The red card will not be reversed, get over it. He went in with both feet up and could have caused injury to the player.
You are all seeing the red mist, calm down, get behind the team at the next game as I know you will and spur them on to survive in the Prem.

Tony Isle of man.
Styles is probably the worst ref in the league, that I’m sure fans all over the UK will agree, I also believe he should be relegated to the lower divisions, but that said, he doesnt get it wrong all the time and I sincerely believe that this is one decision he got right.

thank you for the compliment, you must be really old then. If you take your time to read the all of the articles relating to mr styles, you will understand that nobody thought the result would be any different, and some concede that the red card was a 50/50 call. What has incensed so many people was the blatant inconsistancies for identical situations, i.e. ronaldo and bednar rounding the keeper and slotting the ball in the net after the whistle had blown, only one booked, the ability for lots of united players to question the refs decisions without punishment, yet 3-4 of our players do it and get booked. The gross misjustice of decisions that went on CONTINUALLY throughout the match. Please if your intentions are honourable, then you wern’t there you didnt see, 26,000 people cant all be wrong

First of all, I’ve had a go at you in the past. When you first came on I thought you were a wind up merchant, since then I’ve realised that your criticisms are generally constructive and well thought out.
However. I think you’re wrong on this one. Most of the ex-players I’ve heard agree that it wasn’t a red card. The linesman had an excellent view and didn’t even flag for a foul. Stiles who was on the other side of the pitch almost had the red card out before contact was made.
That said, the red card has been the focus of all the attention along with Carson’s mistake for the second goal, no players or fans thought there was a foul.
The reason the fans are up in arms is Stiles performance over the ninety minutes. Any physical contact resulted in a free kick their way. Numerous throw ins wrongly given Uniteds way, a couple of times he overturned the linesman’s decision. Two Albion corners given as goal kicks. The one that anyone will have difficulty arguing with is the yellow card count. Question which team of the two is known for mobbing the ref and showing dissent and which is known for respecting ref’s decisions? Which team received numerous yellow cards for dissent and which received none? Add to this that when one of our players questioned a decision, he’d be waved away like a naughty schoolboy and then booked yet when their players did the same they received a big smile and an arm around the shoulders.
I’d reiterate what someone else mentioned, if Villa or indeed anyone else is to have a chance of winning the League then ‘referees’ of Stiles, Deans and Rileys ilk need to be rooted out and hopefully other fans will support Rafa’s rant rather than ridicule it.
PS. I’ve been watching football almost fifty years and I’ve never seen a display like Tuesday nights before and hope that I never do again, although I wouldn’t count on it while Fergie’s still around working his wiles.

Hi Real Bully Hoo.
Your right, I am not a wind up merchant, I really do care for WBA and what happens when injustices occur because of incompetant refereeing, I also agree with your comments on Rob Styles regarding his bias towards clubs like Man Utd and also his handling of the game throughout was very poor.
I presume that you were at the match and probably had it taped from TV too, I only saw it on TV and from what I saw, it was a full blooded challenge. Nothing wrong with that, but the camera had almost the same view as the ref and as soon as I saw it, I shouted out “he’s gone”
Now I will agree that had that be the other way round, the card would have been yellow and the Braggies fans would have been screaming for a red, go on, tell me I’m wrong. I know if it had happened against my team, I certainly would.
In finishing can I tell you, I used to walk to the Hawthorns with my Dad from Oldbury when I was a kid and it cost me 1/6d to get in, on alternate weeks we would get a Chara Banc to Villa Park. My first albion game was against Blackpool, I think it was 1948 but I’m not sure about that? but yes I am first and foremost a Villa fan with a lot of room in my heart for the Braggies.

Difficult to re-wiew something once you’ve seen it but I’ve stated on here previously that in my view the red card for Boro’s Digard, quite similar to Robbo’s challenge, should not have resulted in a red, also the one given to the Spurs lad was dubious. What wouldn’t have been so obvious on TV was that the pitch was very greasy and there were TWO players sliding in not one, the difference is that whatever you think of Robbo, he can take it as well as dish it out and doesn’t resort to the theatrics of the other player involved. My point really is that I’d like to take a couple of steps back from the current trend of removing any physical contact from the game. Not going back to the days of going through a player from behind or flattening the keeper but if a player’s too much of a wuss to take a tackle then they should take up a less physical game.
Good luck to your lot and I’d love it, just love it if they pip the cheating reds to the title.

If that red card is what it takes to give Cech a run in the team then I’ll take it.

I was at the match on Tuesday night and having watched the baggies for over sixty years I can honestly say that was the worst display by a referee I’ve ever seen. What is worrying is with this league being so close, at the end of the season those five goals could have a huge effect on the relegation situation if it goes down to goal difference.
