McCarthy waits on Berra decision
Wednesday 28th January 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Wolves should know by tomorrow whether their £2m bid for Hearts defender Christophe Berra has been accepted.
But they have been encouraged by news that the player is prepared to leave Tynecastle.
Contrary to reports, Wolves’ latest offer has not been turned down, after bids of £1m and £1.5m were rejected in the summer.
But Hearts are keen to create a marketplace for one of their prize assets in an attempt to drive the price to £3m.
And sources say the SPL club will decide whether to accept Wolves’ offer later today or tomorrow.
Scottish sources say Wolves boss Mick McCarthy received a phone call last Thursday offering them Berra.
Similar calls apparently went in to Everton, Portsmouth, Bolton and Sheffield United, who have also been linked with the player.
Asked about the Berra bid, McCarthy said: “I’m not going to confirm or deny anything, but there has been contact with Hearts.
“But as to any bid, I’m not sure because I don’t think anyone can get in touch with Hearts.”
Wolves are at least encouraged by Berra, who is prepared to move.
He said: “If it (chance to move) did come up, I would like to go. There’s a week to go in the transfer window, but it’s not down to me really. There’s a lot of speculation. It depends if a club makes a bid for me and whether it gets accepted.
“I’ve never hidden the fact that I have aspirations to play at the highest level.
“If an opportunity did come, I’d like to think the club would give me that chance. If you want to prove yourself against the best, you’ve got to take that chance.”

just get him man,but then agen mick want drop his love child collins so berra dont come here it will just wreck ur career and damage ur morale, wen you see collins picked over you week in week out, mick your a disgrace, its time us fans started sounding our opinions in the ground about collins and keogh etc
Report abuse
Well we need to do something soon because our backs are currently not good enough that is for sure. We can not afford to drop more points etc come wolves spend wise but buy now before its to late.
get him in , oay the 3 million if we have to just get the deal done , top class player what i have seen of him
Report abuse
Hopefully a smokescreen for us signing Mark Beevers from Sheffield Wednesday – a kid with a big future in the game.
By most accounts Berra is not quite what we need.
I am wondering if Raffo or Yozzer went to Reading! Fair enough Collins made a mistake – it could have gone anywhere. But the centre backs completely shut out the top scorers in the league! People need to remember that Neil Collins goals at Doncaster and Bristol City have proved vital and he has scored more goals for Wolves that S.Ward, Foley and Stearman combined!! Give the lad time and support the players. Booing will do nothing positive for the club!! We are supposed to be supporters!!
Have to say i’ve not seen him play but we don’t want to pay over the odds, player ratings on sky sports only rate him as a 5, below average but apparently highly rated if the clubs who have been linked with him are to be believed.
I fear this amounts to little more than Molineux lip service, to appease the masses.
So we were offered him on Thursday January 22, and have only acted on Tuesday January 27, despite Hearts being notoriously difficult to get hold of?! And despite us playing the biggest game of the season without a desperately needed centre half.
Excuse me for being cynical, but if we were really 100% committed to promotion, we would have tabled bids on January 1, as soon as the window opened. Do we really have money to spend? Are we doing all this knowing what the answer will be?
I seem to recall we were here before – notably June 2003 when Mr Moxey jetted off on holiday while Dave Jones was sat twiddling his thumbs, waiting to assemble his Premiership squad.
Can we not be more pro-active? 7 clean sheets in 29 league games would surely be a wake up call to the club? Apparently not.

THEY HUFF AND THEY PUFF AND THEY MISS THE BOAT!

If we buy this guy, Mick will drop Stearman and still play Collins, lets see if he brings Jody in on Saturday for Mrs Collins, hopefully he will. Up the Wolves.

Now we will see the level of Wolves ambition. Why wait get in NOW before these other clubs.Show your true colours Moxey

Collins is no good alright he gets a couple of goals but he s a DEFENDER they have to be able to defend first and he can t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love the photo – we get rid of jug ears and replace him with mini ears HaHa
Report abuse
it’s now or never, get M Manciene from chelsea..surely we can afford £2-3m if we were serious about promotion..he is class and inspires confidence at the back.
& Raffo you want to learn that everyone has an opinion – it’s not just yours that counts. It’s attitudes like that which make other teams laugh their socks of at wolves “fans”
I agree we need players (as do 95% of TRUE wollves fans) but I’ll have faith that we get the right ones in to move the club forward, the attitude of some of the morons on here just moves it backwards
Report abuse
I’ve spoken to many Hearts fans who will be crying tears of laughter if they get anything near or above £2 million for Berra as they simply don’t think he is that good

We need an exciting creative midfielder, someone to partner Quashie and replace Henry – someone like Mark Davies who is playing in the premier league tonight.

People need to remember that Neil Collins goals at Doncaster and Bristol City have proved vital?? people need to remember that collins lost us the game against bristol with 2 child like mistakes!! collins has gotta go, i dont care where jus go somewhere else!!! HE IS AWFUL!!!

We need somebody at the back with Stearman, Sorry
to say but Collins will cost us our top 2 place the kid just cant cut it to many mistake that are now costing us big time, thank god he got sent off last night and will miss 3 games maybe this will be micks chance to drop the lad….. come on wolves dont blow it now…

5. Jon
Re Collins – ok he has scored a couple of goals, but please don’t bring him up as a hero against bristol city! Collins tred to play offside when the player was clearly onside by 3 yards and he went on to score and then he tried to force the player wide and fell over his own feet! I don’t knock players but Collins is clearly not good enough as a championship first team regular. Squad player ok but week in week out he is single handedly costing us points. And yet we have given him a 4 1/2 year contract….puzzling
As for Bera only heard bits and pieces not seen him play. People who have commented to me are split 50-50, could go either way.
Mancienne – Chelsea would not let him leave for less than 4 million, look at Curtis Davies to Villa, 1/2 the player Mancienne is.
comment 17 . i heared similar to you off a celtic fan who watches games up there . he says he s ok . but no way is he a proven player at a higher level. mind you if we paid a million for shackle , then i must be worth half a million . i went to the game last night and as much as i would have wanted dave jones in midfield , Quasie played hs heart out. he did well and for those who may have listened on the radio etc and got adifferent vibe , the 3000 of us at the game gave him a good clap when he was subbed . played his heart out . keogh who s been better lately , did nt want the ball . collins who i usually defend was poor . jarvo was amazing . on the plus side , i dont thing reading looked very good and may struggle at loftus road on saturday .
Wait till tomorrow to see whether £2m has been accepted. What sort of comment is that. I’m sure its a headline to make it look as though the club are ‘trying’ to bring someone in following last night’s game and following fallout. Its pretty well common knowledge that Hearts aren’t going to accept anything less than £3m.
Bottom line is we desperately need a reliable centre half, be it Berra or whoever – Collins failings over recent weeks has exposed our real problems at the back. I agree that he is a threat in the air in the opponents box but surely this should be secondary. He is a DEFENDER and the priority should be to play someone who can defend properly – anything beyond that should be a bonus! Mancienne never threatened in the opponents area but he was good at what he was supposed to do – Defend. Stears gets forward – without too much success so far (probably should have had at least 5 goals to his name) but at least he is pretty reliable and seems to learn from his mistakes. Mistakes that are mainly made when he is playing out of position to accommodate Collins.
Bottom line is we need a decent centre half and we need him now.
Did some miles the weekend, saw the Boro game, then in a hotel in Lytham on Sunday read the Sunday Telegraph who generously gave Collins 4 out of 10 for his Saturday performance. I wonder how he got that many, maybe one for putting his boots on the correct feet, one for his shirt the right way round etc. The report also stated the Boro manager said 7/8 of his team that started were from their academy – did you read that MM I wonder. Driving home to Nottingham on Monday I passed the Reebok, surreal moment this, our best academy prospect of the last 5 years going there, why? I mean Man Utd or Arsenal yes, but Bolton. Its so ridiculous you couldn`t make it up. Play offs here we come.
Get Berra,Mancienne, and two top class strikers to compensate for what you haven’t spent so far, the rest should fit around them and if you are lucky we may stay in the prem if we get there.
Do something or the next match may be the supporters v board.
I think we are nearly there with this one.
To be honest some of you fans, ranting about Collins is not going to acheive nothing. We clearly have a problem at the back which Mick is accutly aware of. This is why we bought Mancienne in and now Berra.
The problem is deeper than just Collins, Shakell is even worse and Jody is getting on a bit now.
Best of a bad bunch really
Report abuse
NO NO NO go and get someone who has either been very succesful at this level or even division 1. I can think of a few before this guy,we are top of the table with ambitions to go up ALLEDGEDLY go out and spend some serious money on a quality proven c/half and a creative central midfielder. This could repay the club 10 times over if we spend around 8 or 9 million now.
IF WE DO NOT GET UP WE WILL LOSE OUR PRIZE ASSETS NEXT YEAR AND WE’LL BE BACK AT SQUARE 1 RE- BUILDING.
Mr Morgan get your cheque book outwith the sale of Davis i believe we have re-couped more money than what we’ve spent under you. MM stop being stubborn and playing your love childs Keogh and Collins
Report abuse
The last time we were in a position where we had to spend was when we got promoted, we didn’t and came down, i agree money has to be spent now to ensure promotion, otherwise this squad will run out of steam. Now is not the time to be too hard on negotiation , save a bit now and lose a lot at end of season!!!!
Come on board speculate to accumulate!!
Well said Jon!. Neil Collins is not the only reason why we lost last night. I have been watching Wolves since 1974 and i can tell you there have been a lot worse defenders over the years and some played in the old Div 1 for a quite a time. He will only get better GIVEN THE CHANCE. Now come on give him support.

Raffo,
If you could base your posts on common sense, that would be great for everyone.
When Mancienne was signed, it was as a replacement for Collins. You’re posting on a an article regarding Woles signing someone who is also clearly coming in to replace Collins. Have a little think.

Pay £3m for him, or £5m for them to keep Colins for us, either way it money well spent.

5 Get real! The first requirement of a defender as that you have to be able to defend! Collins CANNOT AND NEVER WILL BE GOOD ENOUGH AT THIS LEVEL. At the end of the day you have to put this down to the Manager. He picked last nmights team and neither Collins nor Keough are anywhere near good enough. Vokes must be wondering what is going on – he scores a good goal against a Premier side (I know thet are not brill) and plays well and still MM picks the Muppet Keough instead even though he rarely contributes.
HERE’S A CHALLENGE TO ALL WOLVES FANS -
CONVINCE ME OF WHAT AK BRINGS TO THE TEAM -
He does not -
Score goals, head the ball, control the ball, shoot or take players on using pace or skill. WHAT DOES HE DO OTHER THAN PUT A “SHIFT IN”??????????????????????/

Not an opinion – just facts:-
Fact: Preston (home) – Collins let Elliott get in front of him to score at the near post – half asleep!
Fact: Bristol (away) – Collins tried to step out and play offisde, which let them back in the game.
Fact: Bristol (away) – Collins let Adebola knock him over like a schoolboy for their equaliser.
Fact: Bristol (away) – His goal was going in anyway, so hardly a major contribution.
Fact: Middlesboro (home) – Collins tried the offside thing again for Boro’s first goal (hadn’t learned from the Bristol game, obviously).
Fact: Middlesboro (home) – Collins just ambled back, watching the guy score the winner – honestly – just watch the playback – he could have closed him if he’d bothered to run!
Fact: Reading (away) – Collins scores for the opposition – don’t see how Hennessey was expected to come over the top of Collins and the forward to get the ball.
Fact: The best thing he’s done all season was getting a red card last night – now MM can drop him without losing face. Please God, let Shackell have a couple of faultless performances to keep him out.

We travelled back to Brum last night in a car and all 4 of us said what is blatantly obvious, Collins is not good enough and if we insist on playing him we will have to make do with the play offs. He may give 110% and is good in the air but on the floor he is woeful and has no pace. I am also a bit concerned on the goalscoring front. Iwelumo has not scored for a bit, Keogh is not clinical in front of goal, so Saturday it must be Vokes!

Take what your saying about Collins, yes he did get us the points at Donny, but at Bristol he cost us the points, no question & against Preston where he was either full or part to blame for ALL 3 goals, as he did last night & yes I was there, I used to try & stick up for the lad the facts are that he has been at fault in some way for SEVEN goals in the last 4 games at this level, in the position we are in that is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, don’t forget unlike previous seasons we are actually in a position where we can WIN something & that brings its own, different pressures & it seems coco, sorry Collins is struggling to handle those pressures.
I was hoping that the Ref would actually put in his report that he had kicked the linesman & not swore at him, that way he would be banned for alot longer, anyway back from dreamland!!!!!
Keep the faith

I have been convinced for some time the powers that be at Wolves are quite happy in this division. It has been obvious for some time we needed at least 2 quality players(central defender and midfield player)in this jan window. At present we have got rid of far more players than we have brought in,where is the sense in that.At least 3 players last night showed me they are simply not good enough.Collins henry and Keough. If we do not get anyone in its playoffs at best.

it is clear and has been for a while that collins is not good enough, the people that go every week can see this but why not Mick? he costs us far too many goals, karl henry is an average player and “puts a shift in” but is not the quality we should be looking for! We are desparte for a quality centre half but i feel we also need a centre midfielder who is comfortable on the ball and can collect off the back four and distribute (Surman from southampton maybe?) playing henry and quashie in midfield means you are playing to similiar midfielders together, having people who are comfortable on the ball means you can keep the ball which is vital in maintaining a lead.
Mick seems to be doing what Sven did with England! trying to put certain players in the team, even if it means playing them out of position ie henry right back, edwards right back, stearman right back, ward left back (has done quite well to be honest) keogh on the wing………… keep it simple play people in there position if it means playing the kids or rserves do it.
We have been found out big time, and mick doesnt have a plan B, he can only play with wingers! we have to spend and show some ambition, get fryatt in, creative midfielder and quality centre half in now instead of loans!!

Bob Wolf, raffo, ‘we gonna blow it’ and not to mention a lot more of you guys…. try and give a balanced arguement, it’ll make you sound more interesting, and less like baggies…
Personally, I also believe that Collins should be rested for a few games… he makes mistakes, but maybe Shackell needs a run… But remember – for all those IDIOTS that keep saying to get rid of Mick….. We’re top of the league, and ok we may or may not be there at the end of the season, but Mick has shown that he is as good if not better than some of our most recent managers… Ever heard about having a long term management strategy….

Go to google and type in ‘spl highlights’ to get a look at Berra in action. This lad is a quality player with a very promising future in the game. He is more brain than brawn, and with the right coaching he can easily go on to be a really big name player. However, this is where the problem lies. Mick M was always a ‘blood and guts’ type of player, and I feel he might not be able to take Berra’s game forward. In fact, I think he might ruin Berra by asking him to play in a way that is alien to him. Blood-and-guts football might be good enough to get a team into the premiership, but only quality-football will keep them there. Lastly, I want to make it clear I am not dissing MM or wolves. MM is a good motivator and has done remarkably well with wolves – so far. And, as for wolves – they have always been a ‘big club’ name, and that name will not look out of place among the other big clubs – in what is probably the best league in the world (at the moment).

Collins is a good honest defender when doing the simple things, its when he trys to be clever that he comes unstuck. On saturday i hope the south/north banks get behind the team from the kick off, because that whats needed to get us back to winning ways.

Collins needs a rest, and probably more than 2 games. Craddock should be the replacement to add some stability and calm at the back. I think he would operate well with Stearman.
MM worries me! He appears to be defending Collins’ behaviour gobbing off at the lino. Can’t do it. Where’s the ‘respect’ gone? For me, Collins blew the final minutes last night and deserves all he gets, and that might mean an extended stint with the stiffs.
If MM condones such behaviour, he should foxtrot oscar also………

Just a few questions that we believe need answers:
1.Does anyone know if Berra is faster than what we have already? D Ward – No Pace / N Collins – No Pace/ J Shackell -???
2. When Wolves scouts “watched” these centre backs; Did they notice that they have little/ No pace? (This begs the question of what they saw that would add to the Wolves squad???)
3. How much money in fees/ wages have we wasted on centre backs with no pace – If we really have ambitions aimed at achieving premiership status?
4. Is a “Pick N Mix” of several centre backs with no pace/ average talent better than 1 other decent centre back with pace and promise (ala Stearman)?
5. Is a decent partnership at centre back just as important as a decent pairing upfront?
Fans going on about the players being young blah blah are really living in a bubble – these “youngsters” are very well paid and classed as “professionals”
When you watch a film or go see a boxing match – you dont expect to see standards set at average or below – you expect professionals to perform like professionals – the pressures are no different for ANY other team or players – whatever their age!
Finally, Hennessey was very shaky last night – Could that be because any goalkeeper that doesnt have much faith in one or two of his defence infront of him is prone to be nervous???
We NEED a decent centre half – N Collins tries but is simply a bottom half of the Championship defender at best (NO AMOUNT OF “FANS GETTING BEHIND THE TEAM”) is going to make him any better – Its not his fault and he certainly isnt going to tell MM that he isnt up to the job – Is he?
We hope that Wolves dont buy for buying sake – another D Ward etc is NOT the answer!!!
UP THE WOLVES!!!

Get Mancienne Man, Splash the cash, we will get him for 4 million or 5 and he is quality and is premiership quality and a future england star

Yeah..idiots like me must be a West Brom fan because I have an opinion that is different to yours
After all…was I the idiot that blamed the Reading ball boys for the defeat?
I mean that makes total sense eh? Wake up buffoon brains and smell the coffee. Its sad fools like you that are misguided enough to think this team is still capable of auto promotion. We had a better team under Dave Jones, and blew a bigger lead than this.Ahh.. I forget, we will win the next two hoem games eh? Because they are just going to come, roll over and let us get back on a winning streak? I see…all part of the plan.PAH!!!!!!!!!

6.jason have you not noticed all players are rated at five on there well at least everyone of ours, even our better ones.

64.Half their age eh? How old is Quashie? I think you are still blaming the Reading ball boys!!
I would rather have an Andy Thompson than Hill, an Ally Robertson instead of Collins , and an Andy Mutch instead of that waste of space Keogh. We need experience at this stage, not “hoping” that a young squad can hold it’s nerve.Evidently..it can’t

I would say that is pretty young myself?! Jiwal keep away from molineux, booing and critising every 5 minutes is just adding burden to young shoulders.
Neil Collins may not be good enough but dont talk like we all dislike the guy he puts his heart and soul into every game unlike some of the rubbish we have had in the past.

Mate, I think the reason people are expecting us to win our next 2 home games is that recently, over all, the performances have improved & individual mistakes have cost us, mainly by Collins, as I said in a previous post, for me he has been in volved in 7 goals against in the last 4 games, now, he can’t play in the next 2 games so here come the clean sheets, he says hopefully!!!
Without Collins howler Tuesday we would have come away with at least a point, because simply Reading ‘the wonder side’(as everyone seems to think) were not better than us & for large parts of the game defineatly 2nd best.
Now IF we had got a point on Tuesday everyone would have been raving about us, but IF is the biggest word in football, but the fact is that we played quite well away at supposedly ‘the best team in the league’(tongue firmly in cheek, coz we are) & thats why I am backing us to win our next 2 home games!!!!
Keep the faith
Wolves forever

collins is one of the worst defenders in the league!
ok sure he scores a couple of goals but come on the guys a accident waiting to happen!
i don’t really know much about Berra but come on anyones better than calamity collins!

101.Correct, I wasn’t there. I wouldn’t spend a bag of marlies to watch those clowns Keogh and Collins, let alone fork out a 2 grand return airfare from Brisbane.
Before you say it, we get heaps of live games, including ours,(worse luck), each week from the CCC as well as a weekly round up programme.
I spent 35 years as a season ticket holder, so I know I don’t have to be there to know how bad it is !

omfg, we should be supporting not always saying we am crap we need to get behind the team so we can get in the premier if not mm’s gone and another manager to gather and another year dismisle so lets get behind the wolves,
who are we!

Sign Berra, sign Davenport, then we dont need Mancienne. Yes Mancienne is a very good defender, but looked average against birmingham at home and avergae against QPR away, Stearman was class against the Blues and QPR so why waste 3million on Mancienne when clearly a premiership proven defender like Davenport, and by far Hearts’ best player Berra, would be better.
Kightly needs a few games on the bench to regain his desire and hunger on the pitch.
He needs to play Kyle Reid, because he too is pacey, and works hard and played really well against Middlesborough.
And for all the Albion fans out there, next season is our turn in the Premier League. But this time we will show you how its done.
COME ON YOU WOLVES!!!!!!!!!!
