Wolves bid £2million for Berra

Tuesday 27th January 2009, 2:14PM GMT.

Christophe BerraWolves have made a fresh bid of around £2million for Hearts defender Christophe Berra.

But reports suggesting the Scottish Premier League club have turned down the offer are well wide of the mark, according to the Molineux club.

It is believed Hearts want £3million for the Scotland international, but the Championship leaders are highly unlikely to meet the asking price for a player they bid £1million and £1.5million for in the summer.

Wolves reckon the Edinburgh club are trying to force a marketplace where there isn’t one, and they are adamant they won’t be held to ransom by anyone.

Their attempts to sign Berra are also frustrated by the fact they can’t even communicate with the Lithuanian power brokers who control Hearts.

Wolves claim they can’t have had a bid rejected, as they haven’t had any further contact with Hearts.

Berra, who turns 24 on Saturday, has two full caps for Scotland. The 6ft 1in tall centre-back has made 146 appearances for Hearts, since making his debut in November 2003.

This is what worries me about the “Mighty Wolves” and if they do reach the Promised Land! I can understand there is a wage structure in place and they don’t want to break it by paying some players silly money, which they may have to do with Berra etc. But once/if we go up then we will have to spend a min of £25M if not more…. We will have to bid for players in the £5 – 7M price range and with that comes the higher wage bill etc and moving other players up the pay scale we already have.
So the pay structure is going to change in 4 months time anyway so why all this hassle of 3M for a player who is worth it? If we get the three players we know we all need in (Defender, Midfielder and Striker) then we can win this league and build on it in the Premier (only if the money is spent) I’d hate to go up and not invest and end up the laughing stock of the division and dare I say it take away Derby’s record when they were there last season. We have some very good player at the Wolves, but we need at least 5 extra to try and survive in the Premier… If we need to get players in to win this division I’d rather we loan players in then buy somebody who isn’t quite good enough for the Premier and wait till our fait is decided before buying anyone this season (Obviously unless they are Premier stock and good enough for if/when we go up)

    Old news.

Besides I will think he would want to move to a premiership club if one of them does go for him. Personally I think with fanny possibly leaving wolves they are lookin to bring in reinforcements. Berra or Mancienne or both would be fantastic bit of business. Also Wolves have got a pocket full of cash, so show the ambition and offer £2.5M plus Collins who incidentally is scottish take it all leave it.

Collins was also awful against Boro.
I have nothing against him and he does try and I would never boo, but Collins is hardly good enough to get us cross the finish line…….. With money to spend and such a great chance, we have to strengthen now!!! Macienne and Berra would in my opinion be enough to get us to the Premiership.

If our negotiations were conducted by the fans we’d be the proud owner of Billy Sharp (who’s role in life was to make Andy Keogh look world class) and Freddy (very occasional flash in the pan) Eastwood.

Our actual management team negotiate quietly and well to secure Kightly, Jarvis, Elokobi, Foley and Vokes for around a million IN TOTAL.

The clubs who don’t go into debt WILL eventually triumph. Or would you rather spend like Blues – and still get uncommitted mediocrity?

None of the other centre halves we have i.e Shackell, Ward and Craddock will get in as Collins has hidden talents that Mick sees but the 23,000 fans dont. Perhaps he makes good tea at half time. As for Berra who knows he may be a Stearman he may be a Collins.

As for Mark Davies I know as close to factually as I can be that Wolves did offer him a contract last wek, no negotiation, take it or leave it however once Mick has got it into his head that he dont like you, then its dead meat and goodnight Vienna, ala Eastwood, Boothroyd, Mcindoe and Rosa. Mark Dacvies will be a star in the Premiership, Wolves know/ fear that, therefore the big sell on. Pity is if we cock up and dont go up then MM will be gone and we have lost our future captain.

Terrible at Maths or Short Memories or Both?

Our Club is being subisidised every day by Morgan … it is NOT remotely a viable concern at the current level of expenditure.

Think back 2 seasons (MM’s 1st) … no cash .. a selling club.. free transfers mainly.

Think Leeds Utd, Leicester City, Southhampton, Notts Forest, Sheff Weds and many more

2 Seasons ago the tickets, the shirts , the drinks were all overpriced.. always will be ..thats Football ..nowt we can do about that.

Its January 09, we are bidding 2 million for a decent player, other bids in the system

In the Premiership we will spend 30 million

Like it or Not .. its being subsidised by Morgan.. we have no parachute payments like Albion had, our Revenue doesnt scratch the surface of our expenditure.

Mike 41. You can’t just cherry pick some transfer deals and ignore others. We all know that there has been some decent transfers made by the Wolves in the last couple of years – as you point out. But that’s one of the beauties of undisclosed fees. I suspect they cost more than the 1 million you mention.

    And what about these:

    Collins 150K
David Edwards – undisclosed by WWFC but Luton say £675K
    Keogh – 600K
David Jones – undisclosed, rumoured to be £1m
    Shackell, just over £1m allegedly
    Hill – undisclosed

These are some shocking buys – but what remains most concerning is that for the biggest game of the season so far, Ward is rushed back from injury to play, Iwelumo/Vokes don’t get a look in so that Keogh can play and Collins is seen as the defensive rock. So, the only real difference I see at Wolves this season compared to the mediocrity of last is that we got lucky with Iwelumo, who may have shot his bolt after getting off to a flyer, we have Kites and Jarvo playing a bit more and Ebanks-Blake for a full season.

Confidence of both keepers has been shot to bits through management meddling, central defence has more leaks than me after breaking the seal on pint 4 and the side effect of playing two wingers (albeit at least this season they are actual wingers) is the ongoing lack of creativity in centre midfield and the inability to change our approach in the course of a game if the wingers aren’t having an impact.

Still, since people revert to type when the going gets tough, we can be guaranteed of one thing – Henry and Quashie to sit deeper to try and keep clean sheets – we’ll try to grind out 1-0′s against Watford & Norwich on the break.

“Their attempts to sign Berra are also frustrated by the fact they can’t even communicate with the Lithuanian power brokers who control Hearts.”

Are you sure you have the right number?

I am assuming no-one posting on here actually went to the game last night. Collins and Stearman both had very good games. Limited Reading to 2 chances at most. Not bad against the team with the best home record in the league.

I am not a Collins fan and agree we need to replace him, but get your facts right lads. If you want to blame someone for the goal take your pick from Foley or Hennessey. If Hennessay had the confidence to leave his 6 yard box he would have caught the ball lobbed in just before the goal. If Foley had not been tarting around with the ball and lost it, then the cross would never have come in for Collins to score.

As for Berra !!! I have seen him a few times and he does not look any better than Shacks, or Collins. He thinks slow and has no pace, do we need another one like that? I really don’t see players at Hearts level making the step up to Championship football. And def not to Premiership football. If we do sign Berra then I hope I’m wrong, but he does not look like the answer from what I has seen.
