The £3.5million England striker met Gabby Agbonlahor’s flick on with his right foot to net after just 21 minutes of his claret and blue debut.
Nadir Belhadj received a red card for Pompey with 20 minutes to go to put them really up against it and Tony Adams’ side could find no way back.

It may not have been pretty at times but for a team who, prior to MON’s reign, managed just 3 away wins in 2 seasons, its a fantastic turn around!
One thing you can say about Villa is we defend as a whole team incredibly well!
Heskey was a powerhouse last night and in my book, a better player than John Carew.
The return of Ashley Young will see our attack become a bit more free flowing too because you wont be able to double up on Ash or Gabby when you have someone like Heskey or Big John up there.
Credit also to Luke Young, Knight, Petrov and Milner who were terrific last night!
