New £7m waste facility gears up

BIN 5 TS 27Staff looking after this waste mountain in Walsall are gearing up for the launch of the borough’s new bin system.

Around £7 million has been pumped into the “revolutionary” new waste processing facility, it has emerged.

News of the investment at the Greenstar site in Westgate, Aldridge, comes ahead of the revamped bin collection service, due to start next week.

The mammoth new facility in Aldridge features cutting-edge equipment that can sort and separate waste and recycling mechanically, rather than the large numbers of workers who previously had to sift through mountains of rubbish.

Councillor Rachel Walker, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Today’s launch is a major step forward to revolutionise the way we collect, process and dispose of residents’ household waste.

“The changes will help to meet very challenging government targets to recycle more materials and send less waste to landfill and still maintain weekly refuse collections for non-recyclable waste.”

The new service will feature fortnightly collections of waste that can be recycled.

The Aldridge site has always been first class in the 20 years I’ve known it, as in fact has been the waste collection every week. I do hope we shall be given a little time to adjust though and not fined for putting the wrong tin in the wrong bin.

Anything that can be done to save landfill gets my vote. In my opinion we should burn all we cannot recyle. I don’t think there is anything worse that landfil sites.
