Davies didn’t fulfil potential – Mick

Tuesday 27th January 2009, 12:30PM GMT.

Mark DaviesMick McCarthy admits he only ever saw “glimpses” of Mark Davies’ potential after the one-time Wolves wonderkid sealed his move to Bolton.

See also: The career of Mark Davies at Wolves – in pictures

But the Wolves boss insists he was powerless to prevent the 20-year-old midfielder leaving Molineux.

Davies signed a four-and-a-half year deal at the Reebok for an undisclosed fee, that it is believed could net Wolves £2million.

The eventual fee for Davies may make him the third most expensive export from the Wolves homegrown ranks after Keane at £6million and Joleon Lescott at £5million.

But unlike the other two deals, Wolves have secured a hefty sell-on clause. The former England youth captain was widely recognised as one of the best players in the country in his age group .

Yet he has been sidelined for much of McCarthy’s two and a half years in charge

The manager said: “I’ve seen glimpses of his  ability – I think Oldham in the FA Cup replay (January 2007) was the last time he really contributed to the first team play.

“I let him go out on loan to get some games. But players decide where they want to be in the end. We wanted to keep Mark and we offered him a contract.

“It’s one of those unfortunate things – Mark’s not been fit for two years, so we let him go out on loan to get fit. He’s now produced some displays.”

Keane-Lescott-Davies: we are a nursery club when it comes to our best players. Davies has been fattened up nicely for sale in the January window. MM never fancied him in comparison to such stars as Henry and Jones, and so never did see more than ‘glimpses’ of his talent. He could easily have made him feel a future star at Wolves. Maybe his judgement will prove right, and Davies won’t make it. But I doubt it. He has gone from League 1 to the Premiership at the age of 20, which tells you something. Very dispiriting.

“Manager Mick McCarthy has overlooked the midfielder in his first team plans” is the caption from one of your pictures. What a shoddy piece of journalism. Put some thought into it. He was injured during the Steve Bull testimonial game and when finally fit 2 years later MM sent him to Leicester to get some first team football under his belt. How on earth is that overlooking him. I don’t blame the guy. Why was he not offered a new contract in the close season? I’m sure Moxey would have said if this was the case. How did Moxey allow his contract to run down like this? We have had no problem offering contracts to other players who’ve had injuries, eg. ndah. This is pure and simple bad business.

After taking some time to think about Davies, too put a positive spin on the situation would be that Davies did us favour but still both parties can take some blame. The club or Mick seem to be trying to give a lad a bad name, of course the lad hasn’t help himself in that manner however he would of gone on a free at the end of the season and only leaving a possible compensation package for the club, so the best result has happened for both sides now we move on.

The concern I do have over this is where other home grown talents’ futures lie? Let’s take Daniel Jones as an example from last season: He had a great loan spell at Northampton, came back and only saw action from the bench, and then he was gone again? Will we ever see the Bennett brothers get a chance or Sam Winnall or Ashley Hemmings? I doubt very much.

For 2 years Wolves have paid his salary and got him the best treatment we could, and as soon as we get him back to fitness he puts in a transfer request and clears off to play for a team who will surely be back in The Championship soon anyway.
MM never had the chance to really see what Mark could do and so this is no fault of his.

Mick is doing a good job,but he doesn’t get everything right, like all of us.Can he honestly say he gave Davies a fair chance? I don’t think so.The real culprit of course is our CEO.Surely we should ensure our best prospects are tied up in long term deals. I do accept that this was not possible in the last two years especially when Davies was injured. In football terms the fans have lost tha chance to see an exciting talent, and in financial terms the club may find out in the next few years that they lost millions

    7. Whilst some posters have indeed decided that Davies could walk on water, I think the majority of people have simply expressed disappointment with a potentially good player leaving our books without, and this is a debatable point, being given the proper opportunity. Having nurtured the ‘talent’ ourselves, we are still more interested in buying in replacements that are MM believes to be proven or believes have better potential.

For example, assuming we got £1m (some web-sites are speculating just £650K) does just over £300K and David Edwards seem like a fair swap? Some would argue it does. I would have prefered to keep Davies personally, from what I have seen, but ho-hum, can’t have it all!

Just think once again we’re sending out the wrong message to the youth players. Tonight, how many home grown players will we have in the team? My reckoning is Hennessey is the only one – and he only joined us at 16.

Mark Davies was let go by Moxey + Thick Mick.He was offered a contract ! But less than Leicester were prepared to offer him,1 division below us.Moxey told him ” If he didn,t like it he knows what to do “.He did not ” Slap in a transfer request as Tim Nash states in his Moxey loving column,He was given NO CHOICE !!! If this is the way the present board treat our loyal players God help us !!Keep pickin your favourites Mick,we will be lucky to make the play offs !!! You have been warned

62 Steve B. You made the point that “When he was fit and playing he was without doubt our best outfield player” When was that then? I must have been on another planet from the day Mark Davies was born.

In the history of Wolves players showing no loyalty, his departure and betrayal is up there with Steve Froggatt, another injury prone big-headed player. At least Tony Daley and George Ndah had the decency to retire!
