New boss working on player bids

Monday 26th January 2009, 11:16AM GMT.

WALSALL V HEREFORD 1 AE 24Walsall boss Chris Hutchings has revealed he has already had bids turned down for players as he desperately tries to bolster his new squad.

The Saddlers manager saw his first game end in a 1-1 draw with Hereford at the Banks’s on Saturday amid rising injury concerns.

Hutchings is without Stephen Hughes, Stephen Roberts and Rhys Weston for at least another week and Michael Ricketts pulled out hours before the game with a hamstring injury.

Saddlers are preparing to travel to Swindon and Hutchings concedes if he fails to add loanees to the squad he will put his faith in his current players.

Hutchings said: “We’ve been knocked back on one or two. I won’t reveal any names, but we’ve been working extremely hard behind the scenes to try to do something.

“We’d all like more quality because that’s what it’s all about, but the cards we’re dealt with we’ll play with and we’ll get the best out of what we have.”

“The experienced players we have out are a big loss for us and our endeavour and work rate have got to come to the fore.”

Anyone else noticing Chris mentioning Work rate in every press release? Not a criticism, just an observation.

I don’t blame him for that. If you haven’t got enough quality then you have to make up for that in other areas. Hopefully, our work rate will continue for 90+ minutes – no more late goals let in please. We still need at least 3 players: a decent centre-half, creative midfielder and a goalscorer – Jabo is a worker but not a proven goalscorer and Ricketts is missing a lot. Oh, and a decent left-back (if we lose Boertien) and right-sided midfielder would be good too. And find a way of shipping out Roberts and Hughes – too expensive and injury-prone.
