Albion sweat on Greening update
Monday 26th January 2009, 11:49AM GMT.
Albion are waiting anxiously for an injury update on captain Jonathan Greening amid fears he could be sidelined for up to two months.
The skipper has become the latest addition to a crippling Baggies injury list that could see Ryan Donk pressed into action against Manchester United despite a groin injury.
Greening is heading for a scan on a medial knee ligament injury, while Donk is one of four injured centre-backs on a list of 11 potential first-team absentees against the European Champions.
Manager Tony Mowbray said: “The injury list is pretty long at the moment and it’s not an ideal scenario. But it’s part and parcel of football and we’ve got to get on with it.
“Losing Jonathan in particular is a big blow, but he just adds to the list. He is going for a scan this morning and it looks like it’s a medial knee ligament injury.
“After the scan we will assess whether it’s a grade one, two or three. It could be anything from two weeks to eight weeks. We will have to see.”
Greening limped out of Saturday’s FA Cup draw with Burnley on Saturday along with Donk, who joined fellow centre-backs Abdoulaye Meite, Leon Barnett, Jonas Olsson and Neil Clement on the casualty list.
Mowbray admitted he could be forced to take a risk on young Dutchman Donk, as Pele is his only other fit central defender.
The manager said: “I think Ryan has more of a chance than anybody on our injury list and we will have to assess what we think.
“If we do decide to risk him it will be a ‘wait and see’ scenario and let’s hope he doesn’t have to over-stretch in the first few minutes. We are at the stage now, because of the injuries to Barnett, Meite, Olsson and Clement, where we might have to do something that’s not ideal.
“We’ve got five centre-halves at the club and four of them are injured, which is not an ideal scenario going into this game.”
James Morrison, Luke Moore, Ishmael Miller, Craig Beattie and Shelton Martis are also out.

I suppose it gives Valero a chance to show he’s the better player out of him and Greening.
I think we’ll miss Greening personally, but hope Valero does step up to the plate…..Cech might even get a game soon with all of these injuries!!!!

I’d hope that given Man Utd’s ‘even more crippling’ injury list we could have the cheek to go for a draw. Given that Valero came to England to play against these kind of teams I would love to see him fired up for it and dink in a few sweet crosses/passes. Call me a dreamer but I can honestly see us getting a point out of Utd.

The minute Greening went off, we lost the initiative on Saturday. I’ve always rated him highly as a player although he sometimes gave me palpitations with back-passing to the goalie when he could have hoofed it out of the ground. He has a superb engine. We shall miss him.

I am a season ticket holder and supported wba for 36 years.I have been going since i was 5 years old.We have got the best manager since Atkinson and the best chance of establishing ourselves as a premier league side ever. But unless Jeremy Peace pulls his finger out and signs some players in this window it won’t happen. The clubs got no debt and that is good news. But unless we take a gamble and spend at least another 10to15 million we will never establish ourselves. The money can always be put back when we are established.Once the players we need are in place,we won’t need to spend next season. So we can pay our debt off then.So J Peace step up and take our chance instead of being a coward’let your heart rule your head for once.

5 – who do you think we could sign for this 10 or 15 million ??
Which top players will join us now at the bottom of the league – or should we spend it on another 6 or 7 £2 million players ??
I understand that we need to improve but to throw figures like that in is not helpful.
On another topic, I see Blues are signing a player called Carlos Costly – will he be the most aptly named player of all time ???

the baggies are on the verge of being a true premiership club we have fantastic support, why is it, all the clubs around us are signing new players & we are doing nothing ? its so frustrating being an Albion fan .

stoke and hull didnt spend anywhere near what we did in the summer. Spurs have far more money than we do, pompey sold diara for 25 million, and bolton are signing a wolves reject,

Happy is absolutely correct. First of all, we’re only interested in players that want to pull the shirt on and secondly, the January transfer window is notorious for over pricing players because teams get desperate and it’s the last chance to cash in on a player before his contract expires in the summer.
We’ve already addressed our biggest need i.e. strikers with Simpson and Fortune, if we can get a holding midfielder in then great but it’s not going to make or break our season and to just go out and throw money away is ludicrous.
Spurs have just re-signed two ex players Defoe and Chimbonda. Spurs are a joke and their chairman couldn’t run a bath.
JP has one of the best business brains in the Premiership. Fact.
Btw – number 5, we’re in a credit crunch if you hadn’t noticed, where are we going to get 10 – 15 million from? Maybe we can have a wip round at half time eh??

All season we have played decent football, only to fail to convert this into goals. So in this window so far the club have brought in TWO new strikers (Simpson & Fortune) and yet the fans just seem to ignore this.
TM has also said they are looking at other areas of the team and a holding MF has been mentioned – and yet fans are STILL moaning about lack of activity.
maybe if we concentrated a little more on the Albion and less on what other teams are doing we would see things a little clearer ??
Other than Bullard (who i can’t believe has gone to Hull) I don’t really see any other new signings for Hull and Stoke (ect) that are better than what we have.
The window is still open so lets see what happens – but don’t forget, these players have made us the in-form team in the bottom half of the prem and we are 3 points off 11th place.
Can we PLEASE lose the JP haters, just for a little while ??

Does anyone else think we’ve done our business in the transfer window now?
TM keeps saying he’s not going to get anyone in short term as a fix for the injury situation, so is that him saying his hands are tied on getting anyone else in, or am I reading too much into it?

All of the injured centre halves are either playing or on the bench most weeks. Who is playing at centre half in the reserve team? If it was the last game of the season and we needed a win then I’d say risk Donk, but it isn’t. Surely the games in the coming weeks are more important, so why risk making Donk’s injury worse and losing him for those games. I think that realistically most of us don’t expect us to get a lot from tomorrow night anyway but personally I’d rather try it with 11 100% fit playes on the pitch.

[Re_Happy baggie]I did’nt mean spend 10to15 million on 2 players, more like 5or6.I think we should go for Leroy Lita,Hereiderson,Miller from sunderland and Earnshaw back.Earny would bang goals in now we have a team who can play the ball on the floor. They should also try for a big central defender with prem experience.Any ideas let me know.

Use Zuiverloon or Hoefkens and centre back!

Do those idiots who were mouthing off at Robbo think they were helping Albion? Do they think the bloke doesn’t feel down when they blame him for anything and everything? They are not supporters, just unhappy people who will slag off anybody to get the bile out of their own system. Fact: We have so many injuries we shall be lucky to put out a recognisable team tomorrow. I would ask those ‘supporters’ to either be quiet or stay away because we are going to need EVERYONE pointing the same way. Can you imagine what their behaviour would have been on the Titanic? Or in 1940 ? This is NOT that important, but it does need CHARACTER!
Show some !!

Stick Robbo CB, or go for Hoefkens out on the right Zuvi centre and Robbo Left.
We need to sign a Centre back just for back up, no one major just someone who can be on the bench and come on just incase we suffer yet another injury, we cant risk Bednar Centre back now can we :P

I just remember him taking the Mick when the ball was going out for a goal kick, trying to real the ball in like a fishing rod lol

Quite worried about the centre half situation, i do think TM should get another CH before the window closes, if JP could raise 5or 6 mil, i reckon Micah Ricards from Man city could do a job if he wanted to come, and he may with Ishmel Miller connection. Other than that totally happy with the job TM and JP are doing.Boing Boing

21 Cyril.
These people are like fashion conscious young girls. Having a dig at Robbo is the latest ‘must have’ accessory. Other popular targets are Valero, Greening, Hoefkens and one or two others, who will get grudging praise if they play brilliantly but otherwise get slagged off. Remember what these idiots did to another LB, young Scott Darton who didn’t have the experience to deal with it.
Tonight we need fans to support the whole of the team, not just the bits that they cherry pick.

25 – Bully.
I don’t think people knock Valero much to be honest. I myself, have stated a number of times that I don’t think that Greening and Valero work well together in the middle of the park as they are too similar, but have never said that Valero is a bad footballer.
I think he’s got quality on the ball, and gets stuck in, but we need either him or Greening in the middle.
Just heard Greening’s out for at least 4 weeks, so we’ll see what impact this has on Valero’s game without Greening……again it could be a blessing in disguise by forcing TM’s hand????
