Wolves’ FA Cup hopes were dashed by a late winner by Middlesbrough substitute Marvin Emnes at Molineux.

Emnes fired in off the post on 83 to put Boro in the 5th round 20 minutes after Sam Vokes had headed Wolves level with his first Molineux goal.

Vokes’ fifth goal of the season cancelled out a classy chipped finish from Boro’s £12m record signing Afonso Alves a minute before the break.

Mick McCarthy’s men can now concentrate fully on Tuesday’s heavyweight Championship collision away to second place Reading when the Manager will bring back all his big guns.

McCarthy made five changes to the side that drew 2-2 at Bristol City last Saturday.

Dave Edwards came in for Kevin Foley at rightback, on-loan Kyel Reid replaced winger Michael Kightly, Jason Shackell came in for the suspended Richard Stearman, while Chris Iwelumo and Sam Vokes were re-introduced for Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Andy Keogh.

McCarthy’s shadow team took the game to the Premier League visitors with plenty of the tempo that had seen them mount an improvement in the last two matches.

But again its the defence thats letting us down, keogh and reid played fantastic, but not too sure about the back line. MM needs to sort something fast, despite this, wolves put up a good fight against the premier league side.

Today Wolves showed just how much they need Central deffence and midfield reinforcements ASAP.

Middlesbrough could so easly have been beaten but still showed how to win the ball in midfield and the use It. The also had no nonsense cntre backs who could speedly tackle control and pass the ball.

Reid started wel and looks to be very quick but is too easly knocked of the ball and appears light weight. Javis was below par and missed what looked like an easy interception for the first goal. henry was again all energy but little dirrection and made many mistakes.

going forward Wolves are a reasonable counter attack team, but the deffence lacks conviction.

MM must be able to see the problems and needs to act on what he see’s.

Could have been 2 – 1 to us if only…
Keogh made a big difference to the statuesque Iwelumo: I think he died after the Sheffield game.

All was laid bare with the defence and despite comments i heard, Boro will not be relegated> Don’t worry, Colins will never get a start for Wolves again with Manchienne back and Henry can look out with squashie available!

Apart from Henessey, there will be a totally different defence on Tuesday and I really do fancy us to WIn that one!

Although there’s 3 places bewteen the two sides today in league football, there was the clear evidence on show of the massive void in class & quality between the top of the championship and bottom of the premier league. In truth wolves should of been dead and buried before half time. Middlesborough wasted a stack full of chances in the first half before Alves’ quality finish, chipping Wayne Hennssey. All in all wolves created perhaps 5 clear cut chances in the full 90 minutes.

Today’s result and perfomance shows how far we have to go, if we want to win promotion and hopefully stay in the premier league in the long term future. There is some promise of that being achieved, Vokes scored a cracking goal with a great header from even better cross from Edwards (I might add the point that Vokes could well be our best striker in two years time) and Kigthly made a good impression up against a very hard working plus quality back four. Though our lack of quality really showed in the back four and central midfield however could it be a lack of quality coaching? We do have talent and potential premier league players, i.e. Hennssey who was very busy today and made some great saves too keep out Alves and Johnson. Foley and Stearman were badley miss dispite Edwards clearance of the line he was being cut apart through out most of the game likewise with Hill- we do miss Ward without doubt a most improved player this season. While Henry could make the grade as standard defensive midfielder in the top flight, but he would have to be at his best week in and out, while Jones is simply to me is a over rated player, in my opinion, of course he did make a cracking pass in the second half to find Jarvis or Reid I can’t quite remember, which he only does once for me, he needs to do it more in the full 90.

With all that how much would wolves need to spend if we do win promotion? Easily 20 to 30 million, the problem is who would Mick McCarthy bring in? I personally would’nt trust him with that kind of money and perhaps the downside I don’t think there’s going to be that level of investment, take Hull’s 5 million pound signing Jimmy Bullard, I can’t see wolves doing that any time in the distant future. Anyway, some of my doubts about certain players maybe transformed if we could see the very best of them on a regulary basis. However Mick isn’t ever going to get us playing football to the standard of Middlesborough’s play in the first half and by all accounts this is a team who have lost both home and away to the Albion with 4 goals conceded.

So there is a chance of a premier league team being made from our current squad with some changes of course, so still a exciting future despite losing and the recent slugish form, however if we do achieve promotion is our current manager good enough? Reason why I ask is because if we get out-played by ‘the Borough’ then are we ready for Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool and the rest of the premier league?

Best result of the day was indeed Blackpool beating the Brummies lets make that count on Tuesday at Reading. Onwards and hopefully forwards.

We have a good game against Boro just losing out to a late goal by their 12 Million QUID record signing. Although Henry didn’t help by getting caught in possession!

So we tested ourselves against quality and established premier league players and came out well!

We got through without any major injuries – apart from Iwelumo, but not sure we’re gonna miss him much anyway.

Vokes looks like he is now emerging into a class act!
Jarvis, apart from his miss, keeps getting better and better.

And we’re out of that competition! Too many cup runs at Wolves have resulted in disasters elsewhere!

And, we can prepare with new confidence for the next league games starting with the big one at Reading.

And Birmingham get turned over at Blackpool!

Now on to far more pressing concerns like Tuesday night. Avoiding defeat is vital. In the context a draw there would be a great result, so do we go with 4-5-1 formation? I don’t know. Getting a quality centre half in on Monday would be great but can’t see it happening.

    Otherwise 4-5-1 formation v. Reading:

    1) Ikeme, if fit.
    2) Foley
    3) Ward, if fit
    4) Shackell
    5) Stearman

Embarassed by yesterdays performance – Midd’boro are the worst Prem side on current form and we could have been 3 down by half time. The defence looks like conceding every time the opposition attack. Collins had his usual shocker and how much did we pay for Shackell??? McCarthy has a dreadful record of signing centrebacks since he came here and the sale of Mark Davies – the best homegrow midfield player we have produced for over 20 years – is just unbeleivable especially when you consider Collins was given a new 4 year deal in the summer. If we manage to hang on to a top 2 place this season we will do a Derby. The current team is not as good as the one Dave Jones took up 6 years ago and I just don’t see that MM’s record in the transfer market is good enough to make the 6 or 7 decent signings we would need in the summer to make a decent fight of a life in the Prem! Good riddence FA cup. Now for reading although after Saturday’s result, blues may no longer be a main competitor for the top two places. They only have eight days to get others in for a challenge and Bowyer will get injured soon – he always does.although I do not wish this on him. Collins, oh dear, how many chances is he going to get to find some form, thought he was at fault for their winner, wasn’t close enough to their forward & how he got away with the foul on Alves in the 1st half only the ref knows, who was also awful.

Shame about Davies, but if he wants to go let him go, we MUST make sure that we get at least £1m plus a sell on clause, don’t think MM has given him a fair crack of the whip here, if only he had been given the opportunities that Collins & Keogh have had in the team.

i should have also said I also dont rate Stearman. Ok, he’s better than the other useless centre halves we have, but he’s no way a premiership player, and he shud be at the peak of his game now. Nor do I particularly rate Hennessey. He’s no where near as good as Murray.

Finally, for the Iwuelumo knockers, any player will lose form when he’s constantly hauled off at half time for the happless keogh who couldnt hit a barn door, let alone the back of the net.

I cannot believe the number of matches I’ve seen when the top two strikers in the division have both gone off on or befor ethe 60 minutes mark. It must give the opposition such a boost to see top players going off.

    MM is unbelievable.

If you want to keep your players scoring, give them some confidence, and play them. He does it with Ward and Keogh, so why he cant with Iwuelemo is beyond me.

Taking everything in to consideration Wolves were put to shame by the effort of all the other Championship teams in the cup games last weekend.

Just a taste of the Premiership came to Molineux and it has to be said they won in a canter, is this what to expect from a team that are top of the Championship?

Lets forget buying players, we need to buy a coach that can teach the ones we’ve got how to shoot on target from further out than 5 yards.

Mick, we know Middlesbrough have got good players it was a pity we made them look a lot better that they are, the only consolation from losing the supporters don’t have to pay full price to see another cup game.

Its getting to the stage where its embarrassing that the reason we are top of the league is due to other teams losing, ya having more luck than a lottery winner.

With your luck I wouldn’t surprised if half the Reading team don’t turn up you’ve got a sell out support going with you so to compensate for charging them full price to get in last Saturday just WIN.

Iv also heard on the grapevine, don’t invest in banks there’s a better way of turning a tanner into a shillin, invest it with a Scouse, an Accountant and a Barnsley Chop buy one half get the other half free.

53 this is the problem not enough quality, to many yes men to MM, M Davies must have something for Bolton and Wigan to want him, MM said he offered a contract to him, why did he bother, all MM would have done was loan him out to some other team, why do we waste money on the acadamy MM would not know a good player, just ask Roy Keane about MM

It’s time to get behind the lads!
I’m convinced that certain people on here actually revel in us losing so they can say “See I told you so”

    quality counts

Over the years tha gap between the Premiership and Championship has widened. Teams who move up a division lower from say third to second, can make it in the next division. Move to the Premiership is totally different. We witnessed the gap wth Boro. They are just about relegated yet were equally as good as us high flyers. The lesson really is that if we get to the Premiership we had better be ready to spend some real money to stay there. Can’t get away with odd ball players from third world countries. Just imaigine if we had played Man Utd instead of Boro, I think it would have been ugly.

We need Mancienne back urgently. Need to sell Davies for the 2 million and sneak in a last minute buy, hint hint.. Mancienne or the on loan Reid. Or a swap from Bolton would be good, aslong as its a decent player.

Its weird to see you all convincing each other that this game didn’t matter…. lots of talk about the result meant nothing, and whilst i agree that the league is your priority it still adds up to another poor result (following your last game). The fact that Brum lost only covers this up.

I see all those fans who promised a better result than we got against them last week are all now talking about 1 of their players being worth £12 million….. well thats the prem for ya !!!

I still think you will come up, and I’m very confident that we will be there to greet you – but I hope you have just had a little taste of what awaits… we are a better team than last season and we are fighting for our lives.

I hope you come up to make our life a bit easier next season.

    Mark Davies has gone ?

Disgrace. Of course he didnt want to come back. Why should he? He’s got a manager that didn’t value him. Apparantly we offered him a 3.5 year contract. Great, COLLINS was given a four year one, that’s how much we valued him.

Davie has gone because he knew the manager wouldnt play him, simple as that. He’s gone for football reasons.

As usual , Moxey has done a great job, spinning the press because he knows if the truth was out, the fans would be up in arms!

the pessimists- were not good enough, mm doesnt know what hes doing ,the defence are rubbish , etc, etc, etc .

the optomists-we dont care we lost, what matters is tuesday, we only need a couple of quality players to get promoted and stay there etc etc etc.

the undecided, boro should have destroyed us , but , promotion is more important , ie-agree with the pessimists and the optomists.

.baggies. bragging that this a taste of the premier and they will be waiting for us and , nobody wants to sign for wwfc and how much they are better than us etc etc etc yawn.

fact . no one has ever been relegated or promoted because they have listened to supporters opinions.

fact . france won the 1998 world cup with no recognised strikers .(iwelumo)

fact . england have qualified for several world cups and european championships , with guess what? slow defenders who when faced with any one with any movement or skill just couldnt cope.

fact. mark davies three matches in two seasons.if he is as good as some believe , bolton , will win something nxt season ??? . and gerrard better watch out because in no time he’ll lose his place to davies for england and maybe liverpool .

    66,
Boro??? did we really look like we wanted to win the match??? with 5 out, virtually unenforced, mate we ain’t got to play Utd week in week out, but there are 6 – 8 ‘boros’ in the prem & that who we are competing with.

The prem is a lot weaker than ever before, look how many teams are fighting for their lives?

Take away the top 4 then Villa, Everton and the rest are there for the taking. yes it will be hard to stay up but not as hard as it has been years ago.

Look at the teams in the prem that aint that good. WBA,Stoke,Hull,Fulham,Bolton,Sunderland,Boro,Newcastle,Portsmouth etc, Hardly fills me with dread.

So we’ve been promoted and none of our players are good enough for the prem? That’s what I’m reading.
No, Collins isn’t as good as as Mancienne or any number of other defenders but he is the best we have to play right now.
I’d love to swap our entire team for that of say, Man Utd or even Villa but it’s not going to happen. The players we’d like wouldn’t commit until we are really up and truthfully we couldn’t pay their wages anyway until we make it.
There are some real fantasists posting on here. We have the best squad in the division based on the FACT we’re top of the league and come what may will still be top tomorrow.
