Drunken anglers ‘wrecking pool’
Friday 23rd January 2009, 11:29AM GMT.
Drunken fishermen are holding late-night parties at a Black Country beauty spot, keeping residents awake and leaving the area littered with rubbish, it was claimed today.
Beer cans and food are left strewn around Woden Road South pool in Wednesbury after boozy gatherings, say families. Sandwell Council has now vowed to send down enforcement officers to tackle the situation after being flooded with complaints. Retired labourer and father-of-two Alan Tonks, 68, lives directly opposite the pool and said he was frustrated by the situation.
“Over Christmas there were two tents that were erected on the grass and sometimes they even come here in the week,” he said.
“They can be quite noisy at times – the rubbish being left behind as well is really bad and sometimes you get park rangers coming down on a Monday morning to clean up the area and they can be here for a good 15 minutes going through all of the empty cans that have been left behind.”
Fellow resident and gas engineer Wayne Richardson, aged 27, said the rubbish being left behind by the fishermen was ruining the area.
“Some of the rubbish and stuff that gets left behind makes the pool look untidy,” he said. “I really don’t mind people camping out but I would like them to take the rubbish away with them because it is not very nice for it to be left there.
“If you want to walk along there, you don’t want to be stepping into rubbish on your way through because it is just not nice.”
Wednesbury South Councillor Michael Middleton said: “I have no problem with people having fun and camping out, but obviously I want these people to respect the residents and keep the noise down.”
