Around £10 million will be pumped into Aldersley High School as part of the trailblazing Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

Headteacher Tim Perry and his team are planning to spend their slice of the £370 million Government pot on ensuring technology is at the forefront of learning.

Aldersley is in the second phase of the project, which will see every secondary school in the city revamped or rebuilt, and work is expected to start at the site in around two years’ time.

Mr Perry said it was a “very exciting time” and he was eager to see the 1970s building completely revamped.

To prepare for the overhaul, Aldersley High has set up a Learning Zone filled with wireless computer technology, projector screens and flexible furniture.

The area is being used to test drive what the school will be like post-BSF.

Mr Perry said: “Rather than wait and see, we have set up the Learning Zone to live the BSF experience.”

The Learning Zone is mainly used by Year 7 pupils but other students are queueing up to make the most of the facility. “It is a bright, open space and we can organise groups of pupils to suit most learning experiences,” Mr Perry said.

“All students have a portable laptop that they use anytime there is a need for computers. We have put learning at the heart of what we do. The Learning Zone is exactly what we have in mind for the BSF programme. It has taken no time in proving itself an invaluable resource.”

Aldersley already specialises in technology and the BSF money will cement its status further.

Mr Perry added: “Our overall aim is to help our students to become independent, resilient learners. The world of work now relies on motivated, skilled and adaptable people – this is what we are hoping to build in our youngsters.

“The opportunities that BSF funding will give to us are excellent.”
