Bristol City 2 Wolves 2 – verdict

Saturday 17th January 2009, 7:24PM GMT.

BRISTOL V WOLVES 8 GD 17Wolves threw away a two-goal lead at Bristol City to miss the chance to go seven points clear at the top of the Championship.

Neill Collins and Matt Jarvis had scored closely either side of half-time to put Wolves in command at Ashton Gate.

But sub Dele Adebola equalised four minutes later, with Nick Maynard grabbing the equaliser with four minutes to go.

Reading had earlier lost at Swansea, so are five points adrift in second place, while Birmingham are seven points off the top after a draw with Cardiff.

Think we witnessed the best and worst of the frustration that is Neill Collins today. Did well to pressure for the goal, and made 2 excellent last ditch blocks to keep close range efforts out.
But his decision making for the first goal I think will baffle us all and he was far to easily pushed off the ball for the 2nd.

My thoughts, we are conceeding to many goals at present, averaging still a goal and 2 a game but you can’t expect to continue our push conceeding the same too.

Also Mick should shoulder some of the blame, I watched in amazement how the big ox that is Adebola bullied our back line in the wind, why did he not bring Vokes or Iwulemo on sooner?? After we went 2-0 up we far to easily lost the ball up front. Also the Matt Hill change should of come sooner as he was never really going today.

I think we are still ok, we are our own worst enemies at present giving away daft goals and still look a danger going forward. Also Blues still look creaky and Reading are too error prone every 4-5 games. A centre back is needed urgently.

We have to bring in a quality defender,Collins not the answer. How can you step up for an offside
when the balls already been played. He was also slow to pick up Elliot against Preston. When your
two nil up away from home you need quality to hold that lead. The Collins lovers, he,s got a big Heart, but not the quality to sustain a promotion push. MM must act now before it blows up

While the conditions were really hard for anyone to play well this has to be a disappointing result for Wolves. Giving up a two goal lead was really frustrating to watch.

I have only seen them twice this season as I live in Tampa Florida. However, on both occasions, I have been left wondering how on earth we are so far in the lead in the League? We look incapable of dealing with big, strong forwards – a good job that Adebola did not play the whole game!!!

Apart from Keogh and Jarvis I saw little to impress and Bristol were worth a point today. How is that Vokes does not merit more playing time?

The team simply does not look that good and, without major investment, they will not stay in the Premiership if they make it.

Karl Henry carnt tackle the opposition and some times he seemed to be tackling himself!!! And why did MM take off SEB-and why two substitutions at the same time???-why not stretch them out over a few minutes to waste a bit of time while we were leading??? Of course this wasnt nowhere near the Preston shambles,a point in the right direction in terrible conditions.Still a central defender and leading midfilder needed.Oh and it was Kightlys goal-i’d hate Collins to claim it!!!

Unbelievable. Why is it that opposition always seem to have 5 men in attack and 7 in defence.
Is it because MM’s instructions are for every on to get on the score sheet to the detriment of defending. Of the teams in the championship we’re 9th from bottom for goals against. Sceptics might suggest that we are a high scoring team so it equates out. It doesn’t answer the question why our supposed scorers are not doing their jobs. As for the defence why are they leaving opposition unmarked. I feel that their second goal should not have been allowed due to the push committed by their attacker but no other defender was in sight yet they had attackers waiting. If we go up we are going to end up just like the Albion, being relegated the next season.

To all Wolves Supporters and the man controlling the money or more importantly the pies.

If we forget the Doncaster game we have only taken 3 points out of a maximum of 12 over the past 4 games and we are still top by 5 points, that just confirms the Championship league is nothing like what we are going to experience in the Premiership.

We will take all the points Blues and Reading can give us thank you.

If we add the points up of the three teams that were promoted last season and divide them by three to get an average, collectively they are 3 points clear of the bottom of the Prem having spent a considerable amount of money.

I hope that all Wolves supporters witnessed a considerable improvement in the defence when Mancienne joined the club on loan from Chelsea, a step in the right direction if you like to bring our young squad on and add confidence.

As good as Mancienne is, he can’t get in to the team that we are planning to play against next season.

Taking into account the above statistics is it fair to say that we should now be looking to improve the quality and not the quantity of the squad with a view to moving forward.

The target if there is eighteen games left should be eighteen wins and not twelve.

I have tried ASK JEZ and after buying a three quid programme to get the answer it was obvious that the reasons for keeping the barrier down or whether we ran out of pies was far more important.

Just one area to finish this week we purchased another winger on loan, now we have four, Ward, Kightley, Jarvis and the new bloke that’s fine for the attack.

Now I may be wrong on this one, after watching most of the games and particular Bristol match I think we desperately need a top class centre back to bring back confidence in the team.

The reason I came to that conclusion was pretty obvious the defence have suddenly become very vulnerable following the departure of a class player that can’t for fill a place in the Prem, Thats were we are going!!!

I will send this to Jez again if you all feel he should be answering questions relating better quality players rather than selling out of pies.

Please wake up Mr McCarthy, we need to sign a couple of VERY GOOD DEFENDERS. Yes I know the conditions were atrocious, but we shouldn’t be losing 2 goal leads when we are top of the league and at this point in the season. Can we also have a new central midfielder plese. When is Morgan going to spend some of the £30 million he promised when he bought the club?
For those of you who will tell me to stop moaning, yes I know we’re top of the league by 5 points, but we all admit we’ve not played as well recently as earlier in the season and I for one would like to see us put the ‘P’ word beyond doubt by making some good signings and killing off the opposition. Think Morgan needs to get his cheque book and pen out and QUICKLY! Collins was fouled for the 2nd goal but even so, without Mancienne we are looking very dodgy at the back. If Mancienne is available for say, 4 million, we would need to strengthen if we went up anyway so we might as well do it now. There is simply too much riding on it now, if we don’t go up automatically from the position we are in now, it will be the biggest cock up ever suppasing the 2001/02 season when tesco pipped us. One of the most diabolical decisions (or lack of one to be precise) cost us two points. I thought the ref had a fairly decent game up to the point where he and his assistant failed to penalise Adebola for a blatant push on Neill Collins. From the time he came on the pitch that’s all he did. What I want to know is if he can get away with it, why is Iwelumo forever getting penalised for nothing worse ?!!

The second goal was clearly the result of a push and we should have had a foul. The TV commentator said it was shoulder to shoulder but in fact it was shoulder to between the shoulder blades of our player. Once again rubbish referees cost teams points.

Having said that in the first half we actually seemed to want to keep the ball and we played well. In the second we kept on giving it away but both of their goals should not have happened. meanwhile keogh missed his customary chance although once again he was energetic and combative and effective. Had he taken his chance it would have been over. Why do Wolves always have to make things hard for themselves and US….

Craddock back on Saturday to see how he is. If ok then he must replace Collins because once again his mistake costt us. Craddock and Stearman against Reading is a must. With Foley and Ward back we should get the point we need while they need all three.

Collins ws only at fault as he stopped instead of forcing Adebola out wide. Hennesseys positioning wasnt great on the shot either. For the second – Collins was the only guy back there and got shoved off the ball. Im not a great Collins fan – but there was collective responsibility for our conceding 2 goals on Saturday.

I think the only reason MM keeps playing him is to set an example to the squad that hard work and the right attitude pay off, and also to send a stubborn message to the fans that he picks the team. He’s a mid fielder at best ( not a winger).. but frankly, hes just not good enough, and we all know it. Collins is no where near good enough either of course.

MM fully to blame. He’s throwing away all our good work with barmy tactics, and even worse substitutions.

Yeah I know, just checked, got mixed up. I think Reading will be another game that could be another battering, although I think Reading are a little overated. Swansea are a good team, who play good attacking football. They keep the ball well, and score goals too.

I think if we play well, and score first, Mick will make sure this time that we defend the lead, especially because it could be a pivital time. If we win, I think we’ll get automatic. If we lose, I think we’ll cock it up.

And another thing, why knock Keogh, he was fantastic, put 110% in, and played with passion and heart, thought he should have done better with that chance that glanced off his foot, but still we was 2 up, so you can’t put the blame on him.

And like I said before, Collins is a litlle unlucky at times, I think if the fans and Mick stick by him, he will improve.

i am not a collins hater, far from it becus the last few games the lad gives his all and has played OK. HOWEVER, saturday just highlighted the good and bad of the lad and to put it bluntly, he simply ain’t good enough. He has tryed and tryed but his lack of pace and error-prone ways are costing us points. We should of won saturday, for large sections of the game we outplayed city and made them look plain rubbish. I thought kightly was back to his brilliant best and jarvis does what he always does, terrorises teams. We need a decent centre back in alongside stearman as the awkwardness of collins is rubbing off on stears and affecting his normal high levels of confidence. I dont care who it is just as long as they have pace and are strong in the tackle and physically so we can deal with the cart horse type players like adebola.
I also agree that we need something else in centre mid. Altho i dont think its to replace jones as his passing and distribution are what hold our midfield 2gether. We need something to give henry a kick up the jacksey as he is complacent and drifts in and out of games far too much for a “hard-tackling” centre midfielder. Ive saw rumours about us signing ched evans…now i dont think we need striker cover but that kid is talented and he aint ever gunna get into citys team now. That would be good business!

What he should have with 3 minutes to go is make sure that by, whatever means possible Adebola did not get past him, he hedn’t been booked & wasn’t the last man so couldn’t be sent off.

What this shows is that he is not one paced on the deck, but worse still also one paced upstairs as well, the guy needs to be taken out of the side as he is a liability.

That bloke, more than any other, is costing us BIG time. Oh, and his “goal” was Kight’s -we all know that, but credit for being in the right place, all the same.

We’ve sent a clear message to all our Championship rivals: we can’t defend and we’re running out of steam. Everyone will want to play 6′ 2″ bags of concrete against us now that Adebola’s shown our weakness against big, brick sh*t houses.

However, we didn’t make the ball stick up front and the midfield were passengers for large parts of the second half. We couldn’t even defend a 2-0 lead with a bloody gale behind us!

A point gained? YES, because we could easily have lost it…but NO because at 2-0 up away from home, it should be in the bag. It was absolutely embarrassing and cringeworthy to watch as an ordinary Bristol City side made us look chumps.

Stearman should avoid picking stupid yellow as it put unnecessary pressure on him afterwards: he should be the one to stick with Adebola but could not because of his yellow. Also, why don’t MM replaced Hill earlier as he was struggling and too fiercy at times; he finished injuring himself. Why do we buy Shackell for million and he is not considered better than a once-transfer-listed Collins by MM. Is he slower than Collins?
How is it that we conceded the 2nd goal when our backline so high upfield? Can’t we control better the game with 3 minutes left?

1-0 up versus Preston at home…0 points.

1-0 and 2-1 up away from home at Blackpool…1 point

1-0 up at home versus Sheff Utd…1 point (and lucky not to get thrashed out of sight).

That’s three points out of twelve and no wins. The defence has more holes than a collander and Collins is a liability. Very soon, Stearman will go to pot, such is the uncertainty that Collins is creating.

As a collective unit, the team has to shoulder the responsibility, yes. However, Collins is by FAR the weakest link, so fans are merely pointing out the obvious. If WE can see it, so should Mick. I don’t like scapegoats, but enough is enough.

If you are hot on stats, how about this one. 3 points out of 12 is relegation form. Yes I know we wont go down, but come on man, Collins is a waste of space. Slow and pedestrian for the 1st goal, what was he thinking of, and got bullied out for the 2nd goal but a journey man striker and a donkey called Dele! Abject and shocking performance from him, he should be dropped for saturday! I want us to start to spend the dough, and MM should stop lookin at the lower leagues and bring in much needed experience from the premiership as this team needs Daddies, similar when we had Irwin and Ince, experience and hardened soldiers for the difficult months ahead!

SEB has been anonymous for ages now. Mick seems to want us to grind our way through the season. We lack discipline and a plan to hang on to any lead. We looked out of legs in the last 15 minutes on Saturday and desperately need some experience to hold the defence together. The time to make some quality signings was at the start of the season. What price Morgan’s millions if we don’t go up. The writing has been on the wall for a long time now scraping along instead of dominating and cruising.

If we continue to collect points at the rate we have done in the last few games not only will we be overtaken by Blues and Reading but by Cardiff and Sheff Utd.That only leaves another couple of clubs to put a run together and we are not even in the top 6.As for the conditions it was the same for Bristol City and if we cant defend a 2-0 lead we dont deserve to get promoted. As we are top of the Championship NOW is the time to show some ambition and get at least 3 quality players in.

Wolves defence has been a shambles for some time, bring back Craddock, that is more than three steps backwards. Youth wins matches not old men. The trouble we are in stems from the Hayward days and those supporters who and he went to Watford and guess what. He proved a point with less talented players than he left.

    M. M chops and changes players without rhyme or reason and fails to spot those who cannot pass a ball. Too many of the team fail to pass the ball when a colleague is open and finish up giving it aways to the opposition. Dare Icomment upon a Jarvis run for goal against Britol City and with two colleagues in prime position failed to pass them the ball.He tried a shot when he was not in position to so. Time and time again they fail to give Blake the ball when he is open and then when he is covered they decide to make Blake run for an impossible ball. Wake up you Wolves coaches.

I am still awaiting for an answer on how many of the Wolves players paying are admission money as they only seem to be spectators for most of the match.

As for promotion? Does any one believe that the club could survive the first week in the Premiership with the way the current squad, or is it the coaching side, approach matters? Stearman shows promise but playing him out of position will not help him to form stabily in defence . Long lasting partnerships will give it the foundations to stop it giving goals away.

Struggling with people keep going on about Big Chris not scoring, but, he aint gonna score sat on the bench, the guy has been quality all season if his form has dipped of late he should be given the opportunity to play through it & return to form as Collins & Keogh are continually given these hances to find some form let alone return to it!!!!

This guy is a proper centre forward & would have done the same job for us as Adebola did for Bristol on Saturday.

How many back fours have we tried this season? A DOZEN? It must be around that figure, surely?

Injuries/suspensions aside, there’s been too many unnecessary changes performed by Mick. Overall, I applaud his efforts because there’s no denying he’s done an excellent job at the club. Nevertheless, he has a really grating habit of playing square pegs in round holes even when there’s pressing urgency to do so.

    Defensively, we’re a joke.

Considering that Mick was an accomplished, international centre-half himself, how come he still hasn’t rectified our most glaring weakness? That’s what astounds me most.

All in all , we’d have taken that as a good point in those conditions BUT we should not be still talking about a new and quick centre back .The subject was raised at least 2 years ago. However, one is still needed. The last thing we want is Stearman’s game to be upset by worrying about Collins’ pace .We do not need a giant centre back ,just someone that’s quick and efficent with good “sweeping ” ability and a football brain . Unfortunately , nice bloke that Craddock is , he is as slow (er)as Collins and is not the long term answer.Either way ,we must beat Reading !!!!

Vast majority here share my opinion that Collins is costing us. Over and over again he’s left with his head in his hands as another howler costs us points.
I’m sick and fed up of seeing him with his bloody head in his hands!
And yet, it’s not his fault. It’s the manager who keeps picking him when anyone who’s ever kicked a ball can see how inept Collins is.
I can’t help liking MM as a bloke but as our manager I’m beginning to detest him!
His insistence on Keogh, Collins and Ward beggars belief.
If he was manager of a World X1, MM would pick Stephen Ward – striker, left winger, left back, goalkeeper, anybloodywhere but he’d pick him.
And handing Collins a 4 year contract was simply amazing. Talk about rewarding mediocrity!!
And just what has MM got against our own, home-grown youth players? We hear a lot about his youth policy but only if they’re from Scunthorpe or Balymena or Glentoran.
Come on Mick, what have our own kids done to you? You know? The ones who got you out of the shit and into the play-offs when you came here?
Mark Little, Daniel Jones, Lewis Gobern and especially Mark Davies all farmed out on loan and all excelling wherever they’ve gone.
But no, MM prefers Stephen Ward (signed as a so-called striker) in preference to any of our own academy products.
Lescott, Keane, Hennessy would never have had a kick if he’d been here earlier.
Davies (captain of England at every youth level) looks cert to be playing in the Prem within 3 years and yet I fear it won’t be with us.
MMs stubborn determination to play Keogh, Collins and Ward led to failure last season and if they stay in the team we’ll fail again.
Never mind Blues and Reading. Sheff Utd, Preston, Cardiff and Burnley are all threats the way we’ve been playing of late.
It could only happen at the Wolves and yet it always does!!
