Wolves blog: The time is now

Friday 16th January 2009, 9:20AM GMT.

WOLVES V PRESTON 11 GD 10Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd implores manager Mick McCarthy to add the final ingredients in the transfer window for a title winning team.

Woeful, weary and lacklustre – anybody who has seen Wolves over the last month or so would probably use these or similar words to describe how we have played.

With goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and defender Kevin Foley out for the Preston game, a misfit back four and a returning pigmy striker who had a point to prove, I think a lot of Wolves fans feared the worst.

Why did manager Mick McCarthy move our best centre half – Richard Stearman – to right back and then pair Neill Collins and Jason Shackell together in the middle? Collins was at fault for the first goal and Shackell had an absolute nightmare.  It was like watching a couple of Chuckle brothers.

Stearman looked uncomfortable at right back, even though he played there last season for Leicester.  I doubt the Foxes played a system like Wolves, where the full-backs are encouraging to zip up the flanks at every opportunity.

Matt Jarvis was marshaled out of the game, as was Michael Kightly, who has recently looked nothing like the magician we know he can be.

With Chris Iwelumo admitting that he just isn’t feeling sharp at the moment, the goal threat seems to be resting solely on Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s shoulders, but he is getting scraps to feed on and can’t do it all himself.

So Stephen Elliott came back to bite us on the backside, and the subsequent loss has seen a lot of fans demanding more than ever that we see more positions filled in the transfer window.

With Lewis Gobern, Darren Potter, Michael Gray, Alex Bailey and Elliott Bennett all out now on loan and Denes Rosa now finally released from his Wolves prison sentence, surely the decks are clear to bring in some real quality for the run in?

With Kightly so obviously lacking form and confidence, perhaps the new lad Kyel Reid, on loan from West Ham, can play on the left and Jarvis can be switched to the right?

I honestly thought that Shackell could slip in to the centre back position and we would all be wowed at what a player he is. But, unless he got stage fright on Saturday, then we certainly need to bring in some quality into this position.

I had a heated discussion with a fellow fan about the merits of Neill Collins whilst queuing for the Preston game.

I think you probably know my stance on Collins, but the fan, lets call him Cyril – he looked like a Cyril – was adamant that Collins was quality and had done nothing wrong to warrant the criticism leveled towards him.

When I tried to argue that faced with any pace on the deck that Collins has the mobility of an oil tanker, this fell on deaf ears. Cyril was quick to point out that Collins scores goals and is good in the air. Thank god it was my turn through the turnstiles.

Forget about getting in strikers during the window.  We have two of the top goal scorers in the country who just need better service.  Iwelumo has looked a bit jaded the last few games, but he doesn’t become a bad player overnight.

Also, in Sam Vokes and Andy Keogh, we have two understudies and defenitely one who knows where the goal is.

The other understudy doesn’t even acknowledge a traveling Wolves contingent when they are chanting his name! Perhaps the stick that Keogh has had in the past isn’t easy to forget and he feels that unloved, but he can’t actually believe we were singing his praises at St Andrews?

Anyway, a right back, a centre half and a central midfielder.  If Mick could get in the right personnel in these positions, I think we stand a decent chance.

You see, I always see my cup as half empty, erring on the dark side of cautious pessimism.  I’m finding it hard to stay positive at the moment.

We were completely abject against Preston and perhaps slightly fortuitous to beat Birmingham in the cup.  I don’t think the panic button needs to be pressed just yet, but a repeat Preston performance against Bristol City on Saturday wouldn’t exactly help matters.

I know a lot of you will tell me to shut up, that we are still four points clear of Reading and seven ahead of Birmingham, but I still worry about maintaining the charge for the line.

If we can get back to the good football we have played for most of this season, then it won’t matter one iota what the two chasing teams do. But carry on playing the unorganized garbage that we did on Saturday and then our season will only go one way.

I’m sure owner Steve Morgan will know the importance of backing Mick in the transfer window and invest to give us the best chance of success.  Failure is not an option.

Have a good weekend.

A very negative Blog there nathan.I agree we haven’t been playing well for atleast a month but how can you call tuesday lucky? We outplayed birmingham for large sections of the game and always looked the liklier of the 2 teams to score a goal.I thought we thoroughly deserved the win and played alot better than we have for weeks.I believe big chris needs a rest and sam vokes needs a run in the side.He has looked quality in all his sub appearances and had a brilliant game tuesday night with his holding up of the ball and constant aerial threat.
On a positive note,i read today that Stephen Hunt is going to be allowed 2 leave reading.Great news for us as without him they will not be half as threatening going forward!

Nathan let me offer you some advice. Stay away for the rest of the season. Why have Wolves choked so often in the past, simple, fans like you and added uneccasary pressure. I will cast your minds back 2 seasons ago, 9 pros and losing 4-0 at cardiff we stayed behind and sang ‘love the wanderers we do’ for about 25 minutes after the game. That season we over achieved and mick brought in some gems. I travel a very long way for games home and away and I always get behind the boys. Reading will sell in jan key players aswell, blues are buying everyone they can and the deal to get kris boyd there is not far off the one man city are offering kaka which is crazy as he plays in the scottish league equivalent to our league 1. I keep hearing Mancienne will join permanently but their keeping it quiet to stop other clubs from bidding and I will be interested to see if marvin elliott plays against us aswell. we will win the league and being a wolves fan for so long wouldnt surprise me if we win at reading and bcfc after the shambles on sat. Our young guns are doing well better that the sponsorless boardroom battle tescos down the road!

A win for the boys at Bristol tomorrow is a must.

I can see both Welsh sides picking up a point at least tomorrow. Swansea are hard to break down at home and Cardiff can quite conceivably turn the Blues over at St Andrews.

A lead of six or seven points over Reading would calm a few nerves before we go to Reading rather than being just a point ahead with the possibility of Reading going top if they were to beat us.

Just as a matter of interest, have you looked at the first goal again? Collins was only marginally at fault – Kites should have been ready for the quick throw, Stearman should have closed the crosser down rather than stand off, and Ikeme left the biggest gap at the near post you’ve ever seen. Collins wasn’t quite sharp enough, but his contribution to our letting in the goal was the least important of the four.

Gives us someone that can pass in midfield and stops us hoffing it up from the back all the time, thats too easy for defenders to deal with. Maybe big Chris needs Jones back in the team also instead of struggling in winning headers from a long ball which 9 times out of 10 is a CB ball

NATHAN YOU CAN’T DISREGARD THE CUP GAME TO JUSTIFY YOUR COMMENTS!

Were you actually at the Blouse game? Doesn’t sound like it to me. Other wise you would have mentioned the magnificent performances from Edwards, Friend, Jones and Vokes, to name but 4. The whole team did well!

We are top, were in the next round of the cup, and MM has stated publically that this transfer window is critical to the season, so let’s give him a chance. In the mean time he has to manage what he has.

Last Saturday the players let MM down, period! They played within themselves and did not look sharp, and all were capable (on paper) of playing where they did across the back 4. We cannot win every game, but we can learn from them, and look what happened. On Tuesday we were awesome!

Why don’t you concentrate on the positives rather than the negatives?

On Tuesday night we were noisier than the home fans and created a great atmosphere, which is replicated by the same true loyal fans at home. Then there are the moaners and groaners who to be honest get on every proper FAN’s nerves.

Reserves like Vokes and Friend did a great job and the makeshift full backs were quality.
We need a challenger to Henry, a centre half and maybe a striker and then job done.

‘Abject’ and ‘garbage’ against Preston is a bit OTT. Below par and disappointing, yes – especially after a first 20 minutes in which we were dominant – but if you think that was so dreadful you obviously weren’t there in the mid-80s…

I dont think healthy skepticism should be such an affront to some folk. Keeping your feet on the ground is a fundamental life skill – without it you would still believe in the tooth fairy or Scientology or similar…

You were always gonna get the “ignoratti” knee-jerking their way onto these pages, but blindly spouting “wim fur points ahed” whilst Brum and Reading both seem far more geared up for the final push than us is nothing less than suicidal.

We are going to need those 4 points (actually only 3 if you take Readings GD) for the trips to Medejski and St Andrews – a mulligan if you like – and if we dont find some way of stemming the tide there is a very real possibility we’ll slip to third by Feb.

Kightly, SEB, Wayne and Jarvis all stand poised to walk should we fail to go up so its a case of, premier league or 3 year setback. The stakes have never been higher.

Its not doom and gloom, far from it, its a great position to be in – but lets not kid ourselves and say the job is done – far from it – we need 2 quality defenders, we’ve got a loanee on the wings but I’d still like someone upfront.

I realise that things may have changed since the Preston game but as it was my first game for 2 years ( It’s a bit hard to get to the games when you live in OZ!). I can sum the performance at Molineux, both on and off the pitch as…. woeful! Fair enough there had been a few changes but there was no desire for the majority of the 90 mins. It is the first time I have seen the majority of the players in the flesh so judging them on 1 game is very harsh but only Stephen Ward had a reasonable game. As far as poor performances go a special metion goes to Ikeme – cost 2 goals ( did not cover his nearpost for the first and was motionless for the second) Karl Henry, Neil Collins, Matt Jarvis – kicked the ball out or to a white shirt, Kightly – left his shooting boots at home big Chris and MM. The way the game was going changes should have been made prior to Preston’s 3rd goal. I almost forgot – the fans were poor too. When I was a season ticket holder the fans used to get behind the team more often than not during games like that. There you go I’ve had my say. Just for a laugh should Wolves win on Sat how about going mental like the Man City fans did when they reached 60 points and knew they would be safe from relegation. Enjoy the rest of the season.

Nice blog Nathan and for me you are not being negative but being realistic!
No team is that good they do not have bad patches and we are no exception, so a few new players would not go amiss.
I believe we need a midfield general, someone who can control the centre position with authority plus an agile, quick central defender who is not afraid to shout instructions to his colleagues.
As for strikers, maybe we are ok here but Keogh for me will always be a provider not a striker, so if the right striker became available at the right price, it would be ‘goodbye Andy, thanks a lot’!
There is no need to panic just because we have taken only 2 points from 9 recently but what is worrying is if that trend was to continue, heads would go down, confidence would ebb away and our league position could be in danger.
Bringing in extra recruits now would put us in good stead for the run-in BUT they must be the right ones not just anyone to swell the numbers!

We all saw the difference Mancienne made – I think his ability to pass the ball out of defence as well as defend has been overlooked. Collins hoofs more long balls than any other defender I’ve seen over the years. Very dissapointed with Shackell on Saturday – he looked worse than Collins – I personally think a decent centreback is the priority in this transfer window.

Have to disagree with a number of points.

Preston, we were not out played, we just defended like an under 7′s side ALL of the back 5 were woeful & I agree especially Collins & Ikeme, Collins you could blame in part for all 3 goals & Ikeme in part for the 1st & 3rd.

Kightly, I agree he hasn’t been himself for about a month, but he ain’t a robot you can’t play supremely well, as he has been doing at this level all the time, but he has still been working hard for the team & never hides.

FA cup game, Blues put out their strongest team, not too different to the team that play us at the Mol, the fact that they have signed half the country on loan aint our fault, we did play a weakened team & won well, away at a team that DID want to go through to the next round. Also KIGHTLY’s work for our 2 goals was back to his very best. This was a great response by the team to what happened Saturday, what more can they do???

Very harsh on Shackell too football is about partnerships & this lad has not been given a chance I would like to see him given a run of games playing next to Stearman, my understanding is that is what he was bought to do.Some one said on here earlier in the week that the whole back 4 had changed from the Blackpool game, how can we expect consistent perfomances if that keeps happening, we need to get back to basics & the results will flow.

    Keep the faith

Nathan are you really a “W” fan or a plant to stir out comments ? -

One of our bloggers suggests you stay away for the rest of the season and some of your comments mate are simply insulting.
Why MM chose to play the team against Preston only he knows but lets face it he turned it around in the Cup Game.

We had a good start to the season and swept all before us except Reading. Teams set in and grinde out results- Manager’s assess our strenghths and from the Cradiff game onwards it was clear that our “Young Guns” were being muscled out of games–See the QPR game and Blackpool game all there to see on Sky if you are not an away-fan.

Preston game showed what agression was, they came to the “Asda Dome” and used their strenghts- playing people in experimental position was not the time-

We lost it completley-To slate Shakell is unfair and to put him in at that time was unfair on him particularly has he had not been given a good run by MM.

I will not go in to the Collins saga that is well documented on these Bloggs-Yes we need to get other players in but I have to say I think GOBBERN and Jones should stay and be used in the squad.

We are top of the Championship-It looks as if players will come in- we have to trust in MM, he is mad – yes- but we are there at the moment.
Please keep your negative views to yourself-We are all aware what we pay to go to the games we make our choices – I am a Wolves Fan with the FAITH as most on here are-
If you are a reporter be factual and fair and you will not go far wrong–

Very negative blog! Are you an Albion fan is disguise?

I think most Wolves fans appreciate how well Wolves have played this season, and how can we not expect the odd blip throughout the season! I’m sure either Blue or Reading would happily swap position with us at this stage of the season.

Not a great time to be bad mouthing the team, but a time to be getting behind them.

It’s harsh on Shackell who has hardly played for the first team and then he’s expected to work wonders in a square peg back four! He hasn’t had a chance let’s face it. I think he could still play a good part for us though obviously if we can get someone better at the right price we should. Still can’t see Mancienne becoming permanent but Chelski might just loan him back to us.

I’m sure MM has noticed this aswell and has a few things in the pipeline.
Not many of the first team were known to anyone on here when MM took over and now the big boys are after them, so keep it up MM, get the right guys in and i’ll cheer you on at Old Trafford next season.

    Sorry Nathan
I have to agree with those who have stated that this is one of a number of very negative Blogs you’ve written. As we all know, it’s easy to sing when you’re winning, and all too easy to get on the manager’s back and single out a few players for criticism, instead of getting behind the team as a whole. After all, we win together and we lose together surely, don’t we?
Most of your Blogs are great, but I think on days when you are feeling despondent it would be better to really think about what you’re writing before you actually do so.

Spot on Nathan, everything you said was correct, the problem on here is a lot of fans cant see the wood for the trees, they dont seem to grasp the fact that you can be a true wolves fan and critisise even iff its warranted. The only point I have to dissagree on is half Blues starting 11,,Blues had a team of names out,who knows Blues starting 11..We beat them and they cried about a penalty, and help from the reff, the reff has even described it as one of the low points of his career..What a load of utter rubbish, stuff happens look at our Preston game, first we were given a goal by their keeper, later denied a certain penalty (I WAS CLOSER THAN THE LINESMAN)those two incidents hardly got a mention,I think Micks comment was we didnt deserve anything. It seems par for the course,I remember Steve Bruce did a lot of whinging when he was Birmingham manager..As a final thought I hope Tuesday night didnt get Keogh a start for tomorrow,,the fans who say he has earned his place, what have Big Chriss and Sylvan earned..??

As a long time reader and occasional poster on these pages, I’ve come to the conclusion that Nathan doesn’t have his own opinion on the Wolves.

He seems to read the message boards and takes the view of the vocal majority – hence the rants last season when all around him was doom and gloom, the positive blogs pre-Christmas and now the negative opinions again now that the paranoid postings are on the increase.

Please, stop this Nathan and give us your true opinion, or give up the blog to someone else who takes no notice of the fickle nature of most contributors to these pages.

Let go of the need to please SBBA, raffo and the like, realise that we’re still top (where we’ve been virtually all season) and accept that we’re going to lose games when certain players don’t perform to their full potential. After all, even teams like Chelsea and Liverpool sometimes don’t get it right…

I was at the training ground yesterday & i asked Mick if, after the constant abuse he recieves over team selection / substitutions etc, whether he now felt justified & felt personal satisfaction sitting top of the league.

In his answer Mick was quick to acknowledge that most of the booing last seson was because he wasn’t putting on Freddy Eastwood. He was also honest enough to say that the booing directed at certain players did affect the team as a whole.

The best example he gave of a player who received a lot of stick was Stephen Elliott who maybe didn’t get many opportunities at Molineux but didn’t become a bad player overnight, a point he proved last week on his return.

Come on Nathan & the rest of the boo-boys. Mick is in charge, you cannot change team selection so let’s all get behind whoever is picked to play & encourage them to get us past the finishing line.

    37) I think you are giving Blues a bit too much praise. You ask most of their fans and they have been poor this season. As for the new signings – Bowyer so what, Bouazza never did much at Charlton, Fahey – one for the future but will never be anywhere near Keane’s standard and a non-league player. Look at their back 4 and an over the hill goalie and reliance on Phillips.
MM, Moxey and Morgan are no fools we will never get a better chance than now and I am sure there will be other signings and we have enough in our locker to get the 7 wins out of 19 games!

but this blog seems a little unwarranted, ok the team are having a blip but MM recognises this and isn’t panicking, I trust him to sort it out, he’s the one, after all, who guided us to our current position.

As for dropping Kites, as he’s lacking confidence and form, is just madness surely? We expect him to be loyal to us, lets be loyal to him as a team and fans. Hopefully we’d all agree that on his game he’s a quality player. Give him the chance to play through this bad spell and come out the other end.

As for Keogh not clapping the fans, I agree with others, he should be concentrating on playing well and being consistent, rather than taking accolades.

Generally far too negative a blog for me, when a teams down they need the fans cheering them on, inspiring them, we have the players, they’ve done the business in the first half now all we need is the same again in the second.

15- spot on, collins has by no stretch of the imagination been bad this season, hes still young in terms of a central defender and is improving game by game, his error count is now relatively low, it wasnt him who was pushed aside time after time against jerome tuesday or who dived in knee high to try and give a penalty away.
give the guy a break hs improving and will do more with our support, not all central defenders are lightning fast in fact there is a handful who are and as long as we have the safety net of stearmans pace collins will be fine,
as 15 said kightly and steaman allowed that quick throw in against preston and ikeme wont be happy with his positioning.
finally, keogh, he was hailed as our best player the season before last so as you say about iwelumo , he hasnt become a bad player over night, and who can blame him for not clapping the fans, he dosent have to regain our confidence it should be us trying to regain his the treatment he has recieved.

In the first half our goal was not that threatened and we were comfortable- Keough Voakes Collins played well- Kites played better than previous weeks – was it because the Moaners/Idiots were not in existence.
Bristol tomorrow will be tough – we might have dissapointments again – but at least we’re in there battleing so get behind the team and leave the negagtivity behind – Reading and Birmingham will not win all their remaining Matches – so it’s up to us to get behind our team and go forward

Why do ‘Nathan’ types think that the solution to losing any game is to find new players. Modern football is about more than that. It’s also about tactics, shape, work ethic. Good blog Nathan
I dont find you negative at all. You love Wolves, and worry about certain issues, that does need to be sorted.

Regarding Collins – if he is so good, why on earth has he only been called up for Scotland once (Scotland B).
Oh wait, I forgot – about 10 players are in front up him in line to be called up, including players such as 37-year old David Weir, Falkirk captain Darren Barr, 35-year old Christian Dailly.

George Burley doesnt rate him. Neither did Roy Keane at Sunderland. He was a star at Dumbarton(!) then sold for 25k to Sunderland, never to establish himself in the team, being loaned out to Sheffield Utd, who couldnt use him either, yet McCarthy think he is the greatest player to date, and decides to pay Sunderland 6 times the money they paid Dumbarton, despite Collins having only played 18 games for them.
Then after an average first season, where he didnt show any signs of developing into a player worthy of a Wolves shirt, McCarthy decides to award him with a 4 year contract, even though his current deal had two year left.

Where I’ve written a blog in the past and skirted over the issues, some have accused me of being a happy clapper. I know players like Keogh and Collins do give there all for the club, that isn’t in question. But so what? If they don’t cut the mustard, then I’d rather they didn’t play.

I just don’t want our fantastic first half of this season to go down the toilet because Mick starts returning to some of last season’s mistakes. Is that so wrong?

I think we can go up and improve on our efforts from 6 years ago. It’s now a 3 horse race for those top two spots and Birmingham are looking the least likely at the moment to get there. With a some fresh legs through the door, I’m more than confident we will make it.

Mick McCarthay meet Nathan Llyod, Nathan please repeat this blog verbatum. At Bristol our defensive faults were there for everyone to see. Reading will go up, if we want the other place we have to strengthen the squad. Collins is a player you want to love but he makes fatal mistakes. Midfield is ordinary so lets get the players in and push for promotion. Over to you Mick

Nathan shopuld say what he thinks, not what some of you fans want to hear. Football’s all about opinions and he’s giving his. Isn’t he entitled to? Here’s mine, for good measure:

Wolves are NOT the finished article, despite our excellent season. No team is ever ‘complete’ -improvement is the neverending Holy Grail for every manager, which is why every club buys and sells.

Collins is NOT up to the required standard. Hardworking and solid in the air, yes…but hopelessly skinned by anything faster than a tortoise. It’s not criticism for the sake of it; it’s just a fact of footballing life. The odd, vital goal he scores is unfortunately undone by his regular moments of madness. Fact.

Wolves need a quality midfielder, a right-back and another centre-half if Shackel’s going to remain unused. We’re leaking goals at an alarming rate -that’s SEVEN in THREE league games, so things aren’t right, are they?

Anyone content with merely “keeping the faith” (another name for turning a blind eye) will wonder where it all went wrong IF Wolves don’t act quickly in the transefer market. You all saw how pumped-up Sheff Utd, Blackpool, Preston and, now, Bristol City were? Are you SURE the current squad can cope?

Personally, I don’t want to wait to find out the answer…better strengthen before the rot sets any further in.

And no, this ISN’T a vote of no confidence in our young lads. It’s an observation that the stress of a long, hard season is beginning to show itself. They’d probably welcome extra soldiers in the trenches beside them.

Happy Clappers are a house studio project from the UK, featuring Chris Scott, Graeme Ripley, Martin Knotts and Mark Topham with Sandra Edwards on vocals.

They scored two hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, first in 1996 with “Can’t Help It” (which went to number two) and “I Believe” (as Chris Cox Vs. Happy Clappers), which went all the way to number one in 2003.

“I Believe” was a top 10 hit in England in 1995, but was never released in the U.S. until Cox picked up the track and remixed it. “I Believe” had actually been released four times in the UK prior to the Chris Cox remix, peaking at numbers 21, 7 and 28 between 1995 and 1997. The initial release in 1994 did not yield mainstream chart success.

Other UK hits: “Hold On” (number 27 in 1995), “I Cant Help It” (number 18 in 1996) and Never Again (number 49 in 1996).

Figuratively speaking, I interpret “Happy Clapper” has evolved to mean: Someone of limited vision who overly optimistically looks on the bright side of life” I’m going to check Urban Dictionary and will be right back!

a happy clapper is seriously religious person, most often used in connection with reference to a re-born or new-born christian.

can also be used as a describtion of someone naive or easy to please.
    - “what happened to mike? he don’t come round to our club no more.”
    - “well, he don’t go out doin sinful things no more. he’s a happy clapper now.”
    - “what? oh man. amen!”

    or

“you think i ‘m stupid? do i look like a happy clapper to you?!”

This second definition is the one both “Southbank Barmy Army and, in post 106, Nathan refers to.

For what its worth, I’m a lifelong Wolves fan living in Oz, I saw the first few games of this season live, and all the televised games, which are also shown in Oz.
Regarding Collins, he’s a good Championship squad player, reminds me a little of Butler, but when compared with a true “Rising Star” such as Mancienne, you can see the gulf in class. I fear Collins would be found wanting in the Prem. Hope we can sign Mancienne, although can’t see Chelsea releasing him. He’s good enough to captain England one day (or am I being a Happy Clapoper?)
