Iwelumo fears the axe for City trip
Friday 16th January 2009, 12:16PM GMT.
Striker Chris Iwelumo admits he could become Wolves’ fall guy for the clash at Bristol City.
The 15-goal Scottish international has gone seven games without a goal and, with Sam Vokes and Andy Keogh both netting in Tuesday’s 2-0 FA Cup win at Birmingham, the pair are turning up the heat on Iwelumo.
The former Charlton forward said: “The pressure is there but it always has been. Everyone has good runs and bad runs, but with the quality we’ve got, when someone has a dry spell they can maybe come out for a couple of games and someone else comes in.
“The gaffer’s always had that way of thinking. We’re all fit at the minute so it’s an interesting one which gives the gaffer the sort of headaches I’m sure he likes to have.
“But we’re going to need all the strikers between now and the end of the season.”
Iwelumo, who scored Charlton’s 90th minute winner at Bristol City last season, insists he hasn’t let his goal drought get to him.
He said: “The more you think about it the more it’s probably going to hinder you.
“I’ll just take a goal however it comes now, whether it’s off my backside or the defender nicks it off me, but I’m not thinking too much about it.
“You can’t lose any confidence because once you do that it’s a lost battle.”
He insists he only has encouragement for the younger pretenders to his position.
Iwelumo said: “Whoever doesn’t get picked is still right behind the ones that do.I was delighted to see Andy and Vokesey score and that we’re in the next round of the cup.
“Vokesey has shown time and time again he’s a finisher. People sometimes say Keogh doesn’t get enough goals but his work ethic and the fact he’s always playing off the defender’s shoulder makes him a constant threat.”
