Villa blog: The Derby Double

Thursday 15th January 2009, 10:30AM GMT.

derby12Villa blogger Dave Bytheway tips Albion to stay up after the derby and doubts whether Kaka will be heading to Villa Park this month.

Maybe I was a bit negative in the last week’ with my match prediction of a draw against Albion. I was proved so after coming away with a win.

The game all depended on the recovering trio of Martin Laursen, Gareth Barry and Carlos Cuellar for me. To see the first two start, with Carlos on the bench, gave us all much more confidence going into the game.

We started pretty sluggish to be honest, giving away posession way too easily. The system we play without John Carew works better away from home, where teams have to attack us, we can sit deep and soak it up whilst using our pace on the counter attack.

This also gives the opposition much more posession, as with Gabby Agbonlahor as the lone striker the ball just keeps coming back.

In the first half Albion played nice pretty football but, as Baggies blogger Jarrod Hill reckoned in his blog, it was more sideways from Jonathan Greening than penetrative, meaning we could just sit and play like we we would away.

Albion had the most possession, Jay Simpson looked lively up front, but he can’t do it on his own. Luke Moore offered little help, looking again, a bit disinterested.

For all their possession I still felt we were in charge of the game, so when the goal came from Curtis Davies it was no surprise. After being booed by the Baggies faithful, he deserves a lot of credit for his muted celebration. It shows he still has respect for the club.

Our counter attack tactic came good again shortly after with Gabby beating goalkeeper Scott Carson, who I cant slate too much as he kept Albion in the game after that mistake, with a save at his near post.

I think the main turning points in the second half were the introduction of the lively Roman Bednar for Albion, who I felt caused problems for us and was changing the game, and the departure of Baggies midfielder James Morrison, who took any threat of an equaliser with him when he went off injured.

A good derby, but most of all another good three points. I do feel however we need to buy another left-back, as playing Nigel Reo-Coker at right-back just doesn’t work for me. He seemed a lot more comfortable in the middle late on.

I’ll put my name on the line here, but I don’t think Albion will go down this season. They have too much quality and a very good manager that is doing it the right way.

Still, the transfer window is open and still no signings. We need some more strength in depth, but not squad players this time. We need two, maybe three, top quality signings to take us to the next level, but most of all maintain the fourth spot we currently hold.

Last time we were up there challenging, we failed to buy anyone and ended up finishing mid table. Surely this won’t happen again??

I’ll leave you with a thought for this week. £100million, one player, on £500,000 a week!

is this the day football ended as we know it? The working class game for everyone to enjoy? Mind you at least the PAYE due on his salary might ease the credit crunch!

Have a great weekend! Up the Villa!

I hope you’re right about the Albion staying up!!

I said on a post the other day that I thought Curtis Davies was your man of the match and deserved great credit for his muted celebration too.

He was excellent for the Albion, I won’t forget that fact, and I hope that we’re playing you next season in the league where again this small section of the Smethwick End will applaude him as opposed to boo him.

Good luck with the push for the top 4. With Steve Bennett on your side, you’re bound to do it…..bloody cheats!! ;-)

can we have a villa fan write the villa blog. we started poorly but could have been 4 up at half time. Sidwell mishitting an unchallenged shot inside the 18 yard box. headers cleared off the line, milners shot which had carson beaten. The baggies were better in the second half but they were two down so you’d expect them to commit more forward. we’d won the game in the first half and were always going to look to shut up shop.

Re villa game it would have helped baggies if they had a right back Hoefkens would struggle to get in the Walsall side Morrison going off didnt help either all the talk of Moore going back to haunt old club how many thought it would be Davies ? is that his first career goal ? considering the money spent by Villa Albion the poor relations emerged with some credit.

The Baggies did start off the much better side for the first 15 minutes, and to be honest could have been a couple of goals up.
But Davies’ header hurt them, we should then have killed them off, Carson helped us a bit, and a after a few more missed chances, the Baggies with Bednar making a big difference, gave us a scare right to the final whistle, I hope they avoid relegation, we want to beat them by a bigger score next season ;-)
As for Luke Moore, you can see why Vila supporters were glad to get rid of him, too lazy by half, a spell in a lower league might do him good.

Thanks for your comments Nedball, at last an opposing fan who would rather talk football and common sense, than make stupid childish comments, because they can see no further than the team they support.
Unfortunately we all have them, but I want all the midlands team to do well, not against us of course, but I can remember when Villa, WBA and Wolves were all in the top flight together, those Derby days were fantastic and I’d love to see it again.
Thanks again Nedball, I too hope you get it right soon and stay up, I look forward to a few more Villa / Baggies games next season.

Ive been a Villa fan all my life, had a season ticket 23 years. been all over Europe this season too. I write this blog as I see it, and Albion caused us problems. I agree we did have the better chances, by a long way, but Albion definitley don’t look like a side on the way down to me.

    Mr Southbank,
We all know who are the biggest club in the midlands, and have been for the last 30 years. I really do hope you go up, along with the Blues, and Albion stay up. By my reckoning that would put 18 points in the bag guarenteed. We’ve only had one opportunity to play you at the golden palace in recent years, and your ground was half empty after 50 mins. when we were 4 – 0 up.

    Hey Southbank Barmy Army !
Watching Villa is more entertaining than watching the Wolves. You had better play better than you did against Preston otherwise you won’t even win a game in the Premiership ,thats if you get promoted?
KenKK it was the best thing we ever did was get rid of Luke Moore,he is finished! Correct he should be playing in the lower leagues just like his brother.
One thing though,it will be great to see the Wolves back up next season and the Albion stay up,it will be just like th eighties. The Blues can stay putt! Come on Coventry,Derby and Forest get yourselves back up .

6 – This threads probably dead by now, but no problem at all kidder.
I’m glad I can represent the Albion better than SBBA has done in post #3. (Even the Wulfies can’t stand him on their own pages).

I’ll stop calling you cheats when you stop calling us braggies….deal??

    Cheats! ;-)
