Shock at moves to shut glass museum

Wednesday 14th January 2009, 5:43PM GMT.

broadfieldhouseDudley’s historic Broadfield House glass museum could be sold off to raise cash for the council, it emerged today. The news has shocked glass experts.

Council chiefs are considering closing the museum in Compton Drive, Kingswinford, and moving its world-renowed collection to the Red House Glass Cone in Wordsley.

They say the plans have been in the pipeline for years but documents released ahead of a meeting tonight reveal the possibility will be considered during the 2009/10 financial year.

And they hope to realise the capital from the sale of Broadfield House by the start of the following financial year in a bid to achieve savings of £120,000 per annum.

The council hopes it will help to create an improved visitor attraction with all the borough’s collections centred around the Stourbridge Glass Quarter.

Graham Cooley, a glass collector based in Oxfordshire who has held a number of exhibitions at Broadfield House, said: “It would be an insult to the borough’s heritage to scale down the collection in a bid to save money.”

The plans will be discussed in detail at tonight’s meeting of the select committee on regeneration, culture and adult education.
