Villa in hunt for Sunderland striker

Tuesday 13th January 2009, 11:52AM GMT.

SOCCER Middlesbrough 10Villa are limbering up for a three-way fight with Sunderland and Tottenham for Kenwyne Jones.

The Black Cats striker is now believed to be among Martin O’Neill’s top January transfer targets with the prospect of Emile Heskey arriving from Wigan having receded.

Villa chief scout Ian Storey-Moore was in the stands for Sunderland’s game with Middlesbrough on Saturday, ahead of this weekend’s trip to the Stadium of Light.

It was the Trinidad and Tobago international who caught the eye ,with his fifth goal in six games. Sunderland have insisted Jones, who cost £6million from Southampton in August 2007, is going nowhere but they face a battle, with Villa and Spurs both hovering.

It seems likely Villa would have to equal or better the £12million club record fee spent on James Milner to get their man but O’Neill has already admitted he is prepared to pay inflated fees in this transfer window, as he bids to keep Villa’s Champions League challenge alive.

O’Neill said: “I have said I don’t mind paying over the odds if you get value for it in the long term, like Ashley Young two years ago, but it is a difficult market.

Defender Luke Young is one of those who know Villa are in for a tough task against the powerhouse this weekend, having already experienced first hand his match-winning qualities.

Young said: “Last season I went there with Middlesbrough and he single-handedly won the game for them. It’s not my job to be talking about players that might come to our club – but he is a great forward.”

If Sunderland don’t want to sell then Villa are not big enough to force them to sell. Sunderland are a big club with a large fanbase, money to spend and a whole heap of ambition. It would send out the wrong signals about their ambition if they were to part with any of their top players.

…..and by the way, does Villa’s chief scout being at the game of Villa’s next opponent equate to them being interested in Jones?

I hope they are then they will be completely unprepared for what Cisse will do to them at the weekend.

To be fair if Jones is available then I wouldn’t mind seeing him here. 12m is inflated but if that’s the price that’s the price.

I firmly believe that we can go to Sunderland and give them the same treatment they got at Villa park. The only thing interesting about Sunderland at the minute is what colour Cisse’s hair will be next game.

if he helps get villa in2 the champions league he’s a bargain at 12mil!! Wenger obviously belives villa have a good chance of getting in2 the champions league because he looks set 2 try and splash the cash to get in2 the champions league places. Which is very unlike him! And I think villa need to do the same!

Although i think Jones is a great player i think we need a predator in front of goal,so the only player i truly think will improve the villa is none other than MICHEAL OWEN.We have been missing a striker like that since the days of Gary Shaw, and if we are truly thinking about the holy grail then only players of that calibre are going to get us their.
