Red route plan wins backing

wd2315313.jpgA controversial red route looks set to be created along one of Sandwell’s busiest roads this year after a public consultation found overwhelming support for the plans.

Despite fears the congestion-busting plan would cripple trade for businesses along the A457 Birmingham Road in Oldbury, residents have voted in favour.

The long-awaited proposals, which will mean no stopping along a seven-mile stretch, were first mooted in 1999.

Double red lines will begin at Soho Way between Baldwin Street and Cape Hill roundabout in Smethwick, up through Cape Hill High Street, Tollhouse Way between Fenton Street roundabout and Crocketts Lane, down Oldbury Road, Oldbury Ringway and Birmingham Road, before heading on to Dudley.

Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and housing, Councillor Mahboob Hussain, said: “Eighty-five per cent of the people who responded back were in favour of the route. There were a number of people who objected on various grounds and we are looking into it at this present time, it could be as simple as moving a bus stop from one place to another place.

“Hopefully in the next few months it will all be finalised and we are on course for a spring start.”

But Ghalum Rasul from King Fish Kebab House in Birmingham Road, Oldbury, is among those who opposed the scheme.

He said: “We are on a dual carriageway and rely on people driving past and stopping. It could kill off business.”

    Sceptical, Smethwick

Much of the main A457 route proposed for restrictions between the Birmingham boundary and Oldbury is a dual carriageway with little evidence of congestion. Traffic might save a few seconds on this stretch only to be held up because of the abysmal congestion caused by inadequate and largely unenforced parking restrictions on Dudley Road within the Birmingham city boundary. The only really useful and welcome pledge within Sandwell Council’s proposals would be to clear hold-ups caused by lousy and illegal parking on the A4092 Cape Hill section.

Excellent. This makes it easier for people to move out of Sandwell and commute into the jobs in Birmingham from further afield.

Hang on – this is Sandwell councillors making it easier for people to abandon Sandwell and drive from outside the Borough into Birmingham, pollute the air, risk lives, cut communities in two, and create more noise pollution for the people who live here?

Thanks a bunch – it’s good to know you’re supporting us, Sandwell councillors….

Good luck to them. When I last visited Wolverhampton I heard tales of how well the Red Route on the Stafford Road was handled. Hopefully this scheme will be more successful for all involved.

Short sighted sandwell again, they’ve only got to look at the money wasting and laughable red route fiasco in wolverhampton. It didn’t work, ruined the area and got dug up in the end at great expence. Ooh the originality, the vision, the twits!

I responded to the scheme and backed the creation of a red route between Oldbury and Tipton. The traffic there is very congested in rush hours.

To stop congestion on the A457 Oldbury-Tipton, all the council needed to do was remove the island at Roway Lane/Brades Road and reopen the road past the council house.
