January jobs around your home

Thermostat (Picture: PA)It’s the start of a new year, and now’s the time to ensure that your pipes are well insulated before the winter weather worsens and you face ice blocking your system.

The best way to thaw a copper pipe is to use a hairdryer on it. Warm the pipe gradually, working back from the affected tap or valve.

Alternatively, wrap hot towels around a frozen pipe.

If you’re going away on a winter break, remember to set the heating so that it comes on for at least 20 minutes at either end of the day to help prevent pipes from freezing.

Although it’s bleak outside, there are still some garden-related tasks that can be undertaken.

These include sharpening the blades of secateurs and loppers, giving wooden or metal outdoor furniture a lick of preservative or outdoor paint, and carrying out a lawnmower winter MOT ready for the spring.

If it’s frosty, keep off the lawn so you don’t crush the grass, and to allow any bulbs to grow through.

We’ll be running monthly guides to jobs around your house and garden this year. Look out for the next one in February!
