Wolves 1 Preston 3 – verdict

Saturday 10th January 2009, 5:10PM GMT.

WOLVES V PRESTON 7 GD 10Wolves’ hold on the Championship lead was left looking fragile after two-goal Stephen Elliott saw them lose to Preston at Molineux.

Things seemed to be going the home sides’ way when Sylvan Ebanks-Blake gave the home side a 20th minute lead, following an awful goal kick from keeper Andy Lonergan.

Former Wolves striker Elliott – who hit the bar after the first goal – equalised in the 24th minute then made it 3-1 on 61 minutes.

In between defender Sean St Ledger – the aggressor in Chris Iwelumo’s sending off at Deepdale in September – put Alan Irvine’s side ahead four minutes before the break.

Coupled with Reading’s 4-0 win over Watford, which cut Wolves’ lead to four points, their two and a half month strangle hold is looking as precarious as ever.

The patchy performance only served to underline why manager Mick McCarthy is seeking to strengthen his squad in the transfer window.

Wolves welcomed back star winger Michael Kightl,y while there were also rare games for keeper Carl Ikeme and Jason Shackell for the departed Michael Mancienne and the ill Wayne Hennessey, but they couldn’t inspire the home side to the sort of performance that we have come to expect from Wolves this season.

The closest Wolves came to a reply was when Iwelumo headed against the bar in the 67th minute.

But it was a hard earned and well deserved win by North End. Burly striker Jon Parkin also had an effort disallowed and fired over, as Wolves defence was sliced apart.

Molineux old boy Elliott punished more slack defending, when he stabbed home after Ikeme flapped at Ross Wallace’s cross.

Wolves’ hopes were finally dashed in the 74th minute, when an alleged handball from Parkin – which was initially signalled as a penalty – was over-ruled after referee Colin Webster consulted assistant Steven Rushton on the far side.

Earlier, the returning Kightly wasted two decent chances, as Wolves enjoyed their best spell of the game either side of their goal.

But, in truth, they never did enough to win this game and they look a side short on ideas and in need of reinforcements.

The loss of Premiership quality in the team is apparent. This is not the form to get us automatic promotion, when Brum and Reading are full of Premiership experience.

We need some extra quality in central defence, and mid-field.

That wing cover is still essential as well. Some players demand a team place every week, but if we had 3 quality wingers and permed them regularly, then I’m sure that would is reasonable, and we can do that with Jarvis and Kites being able to play on either wing.

After what he has achieved so far this season, Mick needs our continued support, just as long as we don’t start playing rounds and squares again!

What a complete and total farce that was!!!! We were second best in every department and to be honest we’ve had this coming for the last 6-7 games.Considering we’ve had a 2 week break we were aweful. It just shows how average this division is that we’re still top because at best we are an average Championship team in an average Championship.BADLY-BADLY need a new central defender of PREMIERSHIP CLASS which we’ve known since the start of the season! BADLY-BADLY need a ball winning central midfield powerhouse to boss the midfield(such as Paul Ince,Alex Rae were),we were powder puff in there today. And we BADLY-BADLY need another goalscorer who can come on and change the game when plan A’s not working.Im sorry but Sam Vokes isnt ready yet for this division and Big Chris hasnt played well since Sheffield Utd away.Ikeme dosnt give the same steadyness that Hennessey does.Collins needs to go and go NOW,how MM can give him a 4 year contract is on the same lines as Glen Hoddle thinking Thomas Frankowski was the missing ‘piece of the jigsaw’.SEB scored but never looked like scoring again,Kightly tried his very hardest-as usual but it just isnt coming off for him-transfer talk affecting his game???-and i really carnt remember Jarvis doing anything???? Preston wernt much better but still won after gifting us a goal.Yes we will have people on here saying ‘DONT PANIC,DONT PANIC’ but it is not panicing to point out what EVERYONE must of been seeing for a good 6-7 weeks now.Sunderland went up a few years ago after being below mid table at turn of the year,Stoke and Hull went up last year after being around play-off postions in New Year, just because we had a good start it wins nothing.History shows its the last 10-15 games that win or lose promotion not the first.Pretty football in the sun is great but every year when its cold and wet we start to strugle. We just havnt got a strong enough team now let alone squad which is plain for all to see.Teams have sussed us out and dont look scared of us.Before i went into the game i saw the Villa fans on Sky Sports singing along to ‘Hi Ho Silver Linning’ after beating WBA.Its about time we got rid of this aweful song at Molineux and brought back THE LIQUIDATOR,this i think would give the home games a much better atmosphere because today it was flat as a pancake, almost as if everyone knew what was coming.MM had better sort this out-AND QUICKLY otherwise he’ll be ringing the South Korean FA for a job!!! Im not panicing….im just not burying my head in the sand!!!

Terrible game, terrible performance!!!Im so so glad that Alan Gow failed his medical this week!!! After watching this rubbish against an ordinary-average team containing one of our cast-offs its so glaringly obvious that we need PREMIERSHIP CLASS PLAYERS AND NOW- preferably a central defender and a tough ball winning midfilder in the mould of Alex Rae,Paul Ince or Keith Downing. We also need another ‘in-form’ striker who can change things or give us another option because Sam Vokes carnt do it.We are not good enough to beat the likes of Blackpool,Preston,Sheff Utd etc mid table Championship teams yet we are expecting to get to the Premier League with this squad and then to beat average but established Prem teams like Bolton,Fulam and Middlesbourgh(first 2 games last time in Prem Blackburn 5.1 and Charlton 4.0-and we thought we had an easy start!!!).My fellow Wolves fans you really are kidding yourself if you think the likes of Alan Gow are going to make a differnce to this squad!!! Never have we had such a chance of getting promotion than this year as really we are battling it out with Blues and Reading for a top 2 spot.We need to spend big money on big players otherwise its going to be a case of too litle-too late. Some of you say ‘In MM we Trust’ well rarther you than me! For the couple of good signings hes made such as Kightly,SEB,Foley you have Potter,Elliot & Collins.MM isnt bothered what the fans think, look at last season,he gives our worst player Collins a FOUR YEAR CONTRACT-KERCHING! and sells our most creative goal scorer Eastwood after keeping him on the bench almost 3 quarters of the season! Everyone is screaming out for a top central defender but MM will probebly spite the fans and buy another Championship ‘never will be’ striker!! The presures on and this squad isnt good enough to handle it! The natives are getting restless,2-3 weeks to sort it otherwise play-offs lottery becons at best.

Perhaps the happy clappers will begin to understand why some of us loyal fans moaned about the points dropped against Sheffield United. A bad result against Bristol and we could be second after we’ve played Reading. The pressure will be really on if that happens.
Dropping Dave Jones is no longer looking so clever. Edwards has been poor the last few games. His distribution has been awful and we have no midfield control. Henry seems to have forgotten how to pass forwards.
Tinkering with the defence has really unsettled things. Stearman was uncomfortable at right back at Blackpool, so why put him there again. We’d have been better off with him back in the middle, play Hill at left back and try Shackell or utility man Ward on the right. We really missed Foley today.
The passing was poor throughout the team. Iwulemo seems to have lost the ability to win the ball or knock it down for a Wolves player. Perhaps it’s time to give Vokes a start.
However, looking on the bright side we’ll come back from this and win the next seven games.

I’ve been reading Leicester city supporters reviews on Mark Davies on another forum, they all raving about him. Describing him as a class player and one compared him to Gazza, I fear Mick will off load him beacuse his face don’t fit with his favourites. Oh Dear! I hope this is just a blip, but it looks as though the recent performances have taken a steady decline resulting in this ‘embarrasing show’. I think Big Mick is a bit clouded in his judgement if he thinks we don’t need to bolster this defence in the transfer window. Collins is a liability & considering we have two of the most promising Goalies around they ain’t performing and further up the park where’s the threat from the ‘Previously Unstoppable Ebanks-Blake & Iwelumo fed by Kightly & Jarvis? Have teams done their homework and snuffed out the early threat? Somehow it looks like the spark has dissapeared. We need to add some quality to this squad or it’s the dreaded ‘Play-offs again’ and we’ve been given a seven point head start after Christmas. Reading will not make stupid errors like we do….at least not as often anyway. Come on Mick you can kid yourself but you can’t kid the fans ‘there may be a lot of days left in this transfer window’ as you hinted in the Star but by then we could be in the chasing pack. All the rest of us can do is Keep the Faith!!!! Just a quick note to ‘TERRY GOT A NEW TOP BAGGIE’ I reckon you’d be better off concentrating on your own boards, don’t you we’ve got it to throw away you lot need help more than we do, Mowbray won’t get you lot up again when your Bounce, Bounce, Baggies!!come down this time!

I have to laugh.. We are no where near good enough. I get slagged off on this board every time I say it, but I suspect the penny maybe dropping with most of you now.

We have no cover for any first team place at all, apart from the goalies. If a left back is injured, we shuffle the whole back four. If the right back goes, we do the same. If we lose a winger, then we do the same again ( remember blackpool).

Henry and Edwatds are no where near good enough. I’ve been saying Hentrey is not good enough for 18 months. The centre midfield is a complete disaster area.

This team will finish 4th or 5th and lose in the play offs. Sorry, but I’m afraid that’s what will happen.

Some of you lot are unbelievable and a disgrace to the club. We are top of the league four points clear. We are one of the youngest most inexperienced top flight teams in the division. I think saturdays performance was a shambles. But needless to say, our players need a kick up the arse, to get them going again, and also a few home truths need to be addressed, such as the Kightly, Ebanks-Blake and Iwelumo situation. I would drop them all, and put a few hungry faces in like, Keogh and Vokes and Wardy left wing, with Jarvis right wing. I Think its crucial we stay focused, on grinding results out. Every team are going to come at us, all guns blazing, at the opportunity of beating top of the league. Therefore lay off the manager. Mick has done well so far. Dont forget, these lads could be producing the goods in training deserving a shirt on the day, and not performing well when playing. In which its the players and not the manager. I still believe we will go up, but perhaps, top of the league (as champions) is a bit much to ask considering, we have teams below us, playing good football, with premiership proven and experienced players.I think 2nd, or play offs. I still think that the right results will see us top though. Still got the faith. Theres still a lot of games to play. Up the wolves!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get real. Mick’s acheived nothing yet. The point is, this team isn’t good enough, and most people recognise that his tactics are terrible. Have you ever seen John Terry play right back?? Then why play Stearman there.

Collins is no where near good enough. Ward isn’t a left back ( or left winger) .. the list goes on…

I can see why Mick needs new midfield players. We give the ball away far too easily and against Blackpool it was evident we could not stamp any authority on the game. It’s not only the defence (but Stearman at fullback?) because too often they were exposed. We are again missing chances some of which are unforgivable.

However we can use the brum game to perhaps give a kid a chance but I bet that this game costs us at least one serious injury and that is my worry.

However I think we are capable of turning this round and remember 75 points are needed for the playoffs so another 18 or six wins will see us there at least.

We MUST stop giving the ball away and missing chances……..

    65. I think you have a similar opinion to what i think. Our biggest stars are simply just not performing at the moment. The 1st season under Mick McCarthy saw some young and very talented players such as Mark Little and Mark Davies. We need to give players like this the chance to shine again. That season saw some fantastic results and performances from the young and lesser experienced players. They all have pace and the hunger to put their all in to the game. Our best assests at the moment are our full backs Foley and Ward, who when came on at Blackpool looked outstanding Stephen Ward. At the start of this season, we were playing good football, when every player on the field were getting involved in the action and style of play and progressing up the pitch with tremendos power and pace up both flanks and in the box. At the moment its gone missing. And i thnik this is because the full backs simply arent overlapping or showing any interest in knocking the ball about and playing it through up to the wingers, instead of central. I think with the right centre-back brought in, because another CB is inneviatable without Mancienne, we will look more sturdy at the back. Mick needs to start playing football though. If you look at Blues and Reading and even Burnley and Sheffield Utd, they all play attractive football, and rarely give the ball away cheaply. I think the cup game will be good, because its something else to look forward to. As we can forget about the league and enjoy something different and the opportunity of another derby. Also might give us a fresh start. to give us confidence going into Bristol City. Up the wolves !!!!!!!!!!!

I think there’s some perspective missing. Mick has assembled a team without spending a lot of money. Blame that on Morgan/Moxey if you must. They’re young and they’ll only get better – if they get the support they deserve.
Top of the league is great, but none of us should be expecting it as divine right. Both the Blues and Reading have got more money, and players with Premier League experience. At the moment, we’re still over-achieving.

Standing on a freezing South Bank watching that garbage (when your nads are practically dropping off) was hard to stomach. I thought Sylvan was the best player on show in a Gold shirt, though.

No time to panic and the team needs our undying support, however we can’t gloss over what’s wrong. That defence is leakier than an oil sump on a clapped out Morris Marina. Anyone who doubted that Mancienne’s loss wouldn’t be felt too much should think again.

Collins is a tireless worker, gives his all and is solid in the air -but on the deck he’s a total liability.

Karl Henry’s form worries me, too. As Captain, he needs to show leadership and bang a few heads together when necessary. When we were losing the midfield battle, I expected him to step up to the challenge and get the lads cracking -like Incey would have. He didn’t so time for a rest, maybe?

The oppo have finally sussed Wolves out, now. We’re being sucked-in and exploited on the break. We’re conceding at an alarming rate whilst the goals are getting harder to come by. There’s no Plan B from what I can see, and the sheer tenacity in our tackles is missing…think back a couple of seasons to see the drop in “in your face” football. Prettier we may be, but not half so effective when the going gets tough these days.

I see Mark Davies bagged another goal for the Foxes. Time for a recall, Mick? Potter aint the alternative -gimme Davies any day.

Anyway, the game’s over so let’s just get the Blouses game out of the way tomorrow and prepare for the next league match. Hopefully, this latest kick up the backside will give the boys something to think about -and especially Mick.

Most of the blame for Saturday has to go on the two centrebacks and Ikeme. They haven’t played together regularly and it showed. No one took responsibility and there was no communication. That’s why Preston were able to grab such scrappy goals.
Contrast that with the other end of the pitch. Preston marked well giving no room at all to our strikers and wingers. In those situations you need a little invention from central midfield but we simply don’t have that.
This highlights our lack of strength in depth. We need to invest in some quality players for defence, midfield and up front. It is time we put sentiment aside and cleared out all of those players who are not capable of making it at this level (let alone beyond). Invest in some real quality, not just as cover but to provide competition for our “star” players.
And for goodness sake, bring back Mark Davies. He’s proved his fit now and he has more invention than the rest of our midfield put together.

Were you actually at the game? Collins was and always has been a shambles, and his fellow lovechild Ward isn’t a full back either.

I think you need to take a look underneath your skin to see if your colours are Blue and White, because it certainly aint Wolves colours. I understand your frustration, but singling out, is not needed. As i see it, you win as a team, and you lose as a team. And i can honestly say, and probably so can Mick McCarthy that THE TEAM has NOT been producing the goods and good performances of late.

Its wrong to single people out. Last season, I think it was against Sheff Wed at home, when Collins came on as a sub, and he was booed. I was disgusted. That should never happen, and you expect the lad to play with his heart, when you fill it full of disown and hurt. I like Collins. Reading took us apart when they were playing as they have premier quality players. The reason we are top is because of the form of Iwelumo and Ebanks earlier in the season, who put us out of sight before liability Collins got in on the act.

You have a good point, Reading did take us apart, down to all the back four having a shocker and also to the fact that, against Reading nobody played well.

Collins is indeed in his mid 20s as he is 25, but isnt that still quite young to say the average age of a defender retiring is about 32/33. He scores important goals like at Doncaster and Sheff Utd and tries hard, Stearman has been performing not to his best too. Neither did Shackle. The back four are all good players. FOLEY, STEARMAN, COLLINS AND HILL OR WARD. But do need to work as a unit too.

As I’ve said before, the blame should be on the team and not an individual.

And your the idiot, for thinking that Ward is that bad. At blackpool away, he was the only influence in the 2nd half to try and get us the points.

Iwelumo and Ebanks-Blake need a few home truths delivered, because they are simply not producing the goods that they can. They must think they are gods given gift. Because the last few appearence from both strikers for me have lacked enthusiasm and energy and desire to stay in the starting eleven. Keogh and Vokes up front tomorrow.

Perhaps, we will see more effort and chasing down from the both of them.

Yes we are top after 26 matches if you like half way through a race it’s the next 22 that matter only the top two go up automatically so we are 4 points better than second, after the past 5 games I would estimate the form to be mid-table performance so we have to improve 25% to get back to top form.

Not easy to do without a change of formation attacking and solid defending the question is can we do that, do we have the right balance of players, we may be short of experience to finish the race in front, we will see.

There is one player we will miss and he his Michael Mancienne what ever Mick says about the defence, that he has no problems, Mr Collins will never replace Michael and that is only referring to reading the game, regarding football talent, sorry but not within a 100 metres.

Can we buy someone of his calibre, not for £300,000 if we don’t spend soon we may end up with most cost effective team in the prem but it won’t last, Class D horse’s just don’t beat group1,2 or 3 horse’s week in week out at level weight that’s and fact humans are not much diferent.

We have got a problem at the back it was plain enough to see on Saturday and the other teams have weighted up blakie and lumo, not there fault we just need to change the approach instead of being I one trick attack, a few 25 yarders wouldn’t go a miss.

I think you probably wouldnt be able to manage a football team unless you are a Sunday League version of Mourinho.

And may i say that I think Keogh is a fantastic player. We all knew when we borught in Keogh that he wasnt a 20 goal a season goalscorer. Hardworking, a briliant pass and mover and comes up with a few goals.

But he is willing to work incredibily hard to get in the side.

there’s certainly a lot of heated debate on here but there is a common thread – the team, as a whole HAVE NOT BEEN PERFORMING for a while now.

And instead of lifting the others up to their level, Kightly and SEB seem to have gone the other way.

But our defence has been weak all season long. Mancienne gave us a slight breather but mick is having complete brain fade if Friend Hill or Shackle are the answer.

We also clearly missed Wayne yelling out commands on Sat and the sooner he is back between the sticks the better. mick, sell wayne at your peril fella.

nothing good to take from the weekends game except the 11 out there stated the bleeding obvious. WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

    3 questions:
Why is Davies, who is a big part of Leicester’s form not brought back.
Why is Vokes not given a full run out – SEB and Chris are woeful at the minute

Yes – I was at the game. Pretty harsh to blame Collins for all 3 goals. You blame him for not picking up Elliott (twice) and Parkin, too – so who was he marking ? Or is he always to blame, regardless ?
So why did Ikeme come half way for the second, and who allowed St Ledger to tap in ? On the third, Parkin was free in the box, tried to shoot and scuffed it straight to Elliott. Who was marking Parkin ? (or was that Collins, again ?).

First defeat since September 2008 at home A ref that certainly needed a visit to the optician. Come on guys get it into perspective and back the team.Picking on a few seems very churlish to me as a team is a team not one or two players

Please can we just get Kightly and Jarvis hugging the touchline again, taking on their full-backs and whipping in crosses?!? I’m sure other people have noticed this at the games, but I’ve seen a lot of drifting in field, with these two being arguably our most dangerous players, they’re getting too close to the strikers and crowded out. This coupled with our obvious lack of a combative midfielder is losing us the midfield. I think we could do with getting back to our strengths a bit, and playing a wide 4-4-2. Also, I think the time has come to maybe give Vokes a couple of starts, if anything just to give Big Chris a bit more impertus to do more than just concede free kicks!
Obviously everyone is talking about new faces, but I think we’ve already got a promotion standard team. Granted you don’t lose a player of Mancienne’s obvious quality and just carry on regardless. But I think our squad is good enough, they just need to simplify things a little.

Some of these comments are an absolute disgrace and so embarassing to read. The most ridiculous is comment 25, do you really know anything about football?SEB is the best finisher we’ve had since Bully and Keano and Iwelumo has been a relevation since his move. Just because he hasnt scored for 6 games doesnt mean that he is a division 2 bench warmer. Without these two we would be bottom haf of the table and then that would be something to moan about. Not top of the league and one really bad performance. Get over yourselves and stop being so petty and unbelievably pathetic and last thing comment 47, Sean O’Driscoll you being serious?one of the best things about this club in the past three years is that McCarthy has been in charge.

cant win them all .. ? First defeat since Sep 08.. what games do you lot watch.

The last 6 or so games have been disgraceful…. thats 6 (six) and I see no reason whatsoever that mick knows how to shift this slump. Perhaps we should try playing people in different positions… oh wait.

new blood is all that will do.

Blues are without pretty much everyone for tonites game and I still dont think we stand a chance… come on Wolves prove me wrong, i would love you to prove me wrong.

    Whartons Right Cross

I’m right cross about the way we played on Saturday, this is not a Championship winning team!

Dramatic changes are needed, and that doesn’t mean playing Potter!

The centre-half-backs is where I think we are weakest, we are letting too many get past and not supplying the forwards with the balls they need.

Some class is needed, the rest of this young team then respond to that inspiration. The need for wing cover has been an issue for all the time Mick has been here, except for that short period when Carlos Edwards was on loan to us. We were also scoring for fun in those days.

Finger out, no round pegs in square holes and keep it simple. It works for the Villa!

    49. West Bromwich are the current football league champions. We’re not talking about an achievement from half a century ago here, but last year. They’ve won the English league title, 5 FA cups (that’s right, one more than Wolves), and also played in MAJOR European competition. I’m not sure what point you were trying to make?
