Elderly woman is killed on road

A pensioner has died after being hit by a car as she crossed a busy Black Country road with another elderly woman.

Police were today appealing for witnesses following the death of 89-year-old Edna Bytheway, who was in collision with the Volkswagen Golf on The Green, near the junction of Addenbrooke Street, in Darlaston.

Mrs Bytheway was just yards from her home in Cramp Hill when tragedy struck at 3.45pm yesterday.

She was with an 85-year-old companion who was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital and treated for shock but has since been released. Mrs Bytheway suffered later died in hospital.

The owner of the nearby Costcutter store, who did not want to be named, said today: “The lady used to come in here and she was really nice.”

The driver, a 57-year-old man from West Bromwich, was shaken but unharmed following the collision.
