Nothing to prove for Saddlers stopper

brighton-5.jpegWalsall defender Rhys Weston believes he has nothing to prove as he looks to exorcise his demons against Brighton.

Weston was sent off after just 15 minutes and was then followed by Netan Sansara, in the Saddlers’ improbable 1-0 win at the Withdean Stadium in September.

It heralded a downturn in the defender’s fortunes where he found himself on the fringes of the squad, sparking rumours of a rift between him and manager Jimmy Mullen.

But he has since returned, in recent weeks scored his first goal in six years and was made captain for the game against Tranmere two weeks ago.

He said: “I don’t feel I have anything left to prove. I am 28, I have had little tests throughout my career and time and time again I have come back from the brink of obscurity.

“I am looking to improve as a player for my own benefit and there won’t be anything else in my mind, other than doing well for myself and the team.

“I don’t have to put anything right against Brighton, I was unfortunate but I will be going out to do my very best.”

Weston has looked the part since he returned to the team as a centre back. I think that he is a natural replacement for Gerrard because of his pace and ability on the ground. We would need a big centre-half to play alongside him though – I don’t think that is Stephen Roberts (when he’s fit!).
