Police blocked off part of the Birmingham New Road for an hour as the air ambulance landed and traffic backed up along the dual carriageway towards Oldbury and the Tividale Road.
The car, a silver Seat, landed on it roof and firefighters cut the woman driver free.
It is believed the car skidded as it turned the corner at the island on the Tipton/Dudley border at around 11.20am.
A wheel came off, causing the car to crash into railings and flip on to its roof.
Acting Watch Commander Michael Bagnall, of Tipton fire station, said: “The car was overturned in the centre of the dual carriageway.
“There were two crews, ourselves from Tipton and Dudley along with the air ambulance and three other ambulances. Our crew had to cut away one door with heavy-duty cutting equipment and got the woman driver out.” The air ambulance landed on Burnt Tree Primary School.
The woman was taken to Selly Oak Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.
Witness Ray Brothwood said: “The road was completely blocked off so there was a lot of traffic backed up.”
