Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Gow on way to sign Molineux deal
Wednesday 7th January 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Alan Gow jets in to become a Wolves player tonight – determined to make Molineux history and reward Mick McCarthy’s loyalty.
The Rangers forward is due to arrive in Birmingham from Glasgow late this afternoon for a medical and sign after agreeing a two and a half year contract in a £250,000 move.
Glaswegian Gow, a wiry six-footer, is anxious to prove a point after McCarthy ended an 18-month chase for his signature.
“Alan’s just turned 26 and he’s at the point where he has to make his mark,” said Gow’s agent Phil McTaggart.
“Whether Wolves were 12th or first in the league, he knows Mick McCarthy’s history of trying to sign him and he wants to be part of making history at Wolves.
“The big, big thing is Mick tried to get him 18 months ago when he was at Falkirk.
“Mick had a bid for him rejected and he signed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers.
“The fact Mick knows the Scottish game well, he knows Alan’s history, he’s had him watched and has been cute enough to act within the first week of the transfer window opening shows how highly he rates Alan, and Alan wants to repay that.”
McTaggart revealed Gow could become a real crowd pleaser at Molineux.
“He’s the kind of player people want to pay to watch – his footballing mentality is to run at people, dribble at them, beat someone and a have a shot or beat someone and get a cross in,” he said.
“He’s very technical and the ball sticks to his feet.
“He can wide left, wide right or through the middle.
“If he proves himself, Mick can utilise him in different positions and different formations. If he passes his medical, he’s going to better himself because he’s coming from a club where opportunities were few and far between.”
Bizarrely, Gow failed to play an SPL game for Rangers, figuring just once each in the Scottish Cup and League Cup, after 38 goals in 161 league appearances for Clydebank, Airdrie and Falkirk. Moves to Burnley and Norwich last summer broke down and his long exile ended with an impressive loan at Blackpool, where he’s netted five goals in 17 – including 10 starts – this season.

i realy do think that when they recalled mancienne after only just extending his deal was out of line whhich didnt please mick so as i would of done probly showed chelsea the 2 finger salute.
Regarding Sinclair………..I dont think he was our top priority to be honest. Gow seems to have been the wing/strike cover we needed, there was no hesitation there! Also I would add its fairly obvious our priority is a centre half or central midfielder………to suggest its a blow for us not to get another winger in may be true in one way but it is a bit of a false statement to say he was our top target surely……………Alan Gow permanently or Sinclair for 1 month……hmmmmm not really a hard decision….
Hes alright but hes nobody special but think hes the same type of player that we already have. Thought for a second we might be signing some players that would be prem league level. Hope the lad proves me wrong and good luck to him.
I’d like to see him play a part on Saturday. Good Luck Gowey, I’m sure you’ll have a chant for you in no time.
ROLL ON THE NEXT SIGNING! :-)
It will be interesting to see in what position MM will play him. As a winger, central midfielder or as an alternate striker. Or all of the above as a utility player to fork up a defence. Hope he’s good enough for back-up, but doubt he will find a regular place in the starting XI.
What Wolves need desperately is a top resource holding midfielder with long experience. Our defensive power is not good enough as it is and if Henry gets a knock we will have no one good enough to replace him with.
By the way, those people yesterday who were saying we are not ambitious by signing this type of player……..watch him first. Ive seen him play before, not just with Blackpool, and he is quick, skillful and I actually thought he would go to a Premier club like Fulham or WBA or someone……..For the doubters, watch this space, you’ll be suprised!
Sounds like a good player. We needed cover for LW and upfront.
In Mick we trust.

The ultimate pesimist i am, why are we signing another striker. We have so many players on the books like Harry Potter, Darren Ward, Jodie Cradock who can’t get a game we now pottentially have someone else and the problem is they are all on reasonably long contracts. Surely spending a lot of money to get a couple of quality players in and know they could be usedto get us up and then play in the premier league. My worry is all our squad will be on 2 or 3 year deals, will we have money to buy proven premership players. Right side of midfield and central midfield in my opinion where all the money should be spent. We are already the top scorers in the league averaging 2 goals every game sorry dont make sense and i can’t understand the forward thinking.

who cares about Scott Sinclair. Kightly and Jarvis are better players…
Report abuse
Sinclair didnt snub wolves, he looked at us and thought with kightly and jarvis on the wings he would be a sub so might as well be a sub at chelsea? blues paying 4 mil for boyd made me laugh! john joe o’toole next 1.2mil what a signing he will be, 20 years of age, 6,2, tough tackler, scores goals, awesome!

not sure about this signing where will he fit into this team jarvis and kites are easily better so are sylvs and looms. waste of cash if you ask me we need a goal scoring midfielder who plays in the middle

I Just carnt see this as a good signing myself.Gows been at Rangers for 18 months and only played 3 times for them. The Scotish SPL is at best as good as the Championship therefore we’re only signing a Championship player at best! It shows our ambition that one of our main rivals B-ham City are spending £3.5M on the SPLs top scorer yet we’re paying £250k for a player that carnt even get a game in the SPL!!! I Can see we’re going down the same road as MM took Sunderland when they got promoted,Championship winning players yes but far from Premier League quality.Im not advocatig spending £3M like Blues on one player but its the quality of the player-long term we need to address. We are just going to be stuck in the Premier league with a squad of Championship players on Premier League wages we wont be able to shift. If SEB gets a long term injury i carnt see Gow,Keogh or any other of our forwards scoring as many as SEB would.A Premiership quality centre back such as Berra,a decent-STRONG midfielder who can pass the ball(unlike Karl Henry) and a fast pacey goalscorer(such as Arron Maclean) are what we need right now-we’ve got to look like we’re going to go up not like we think we might not! A New deal for Jarvis yes,but lets not forgett hes been injured most the time hes been here-we dont want another Matt Murrey or George N’Dah.
15 – I agree with you to an extent, he wont be a first team regular, but what if any of the above you mentioned get injured? We have cover for all three positions in one player, should hopefully be a great addition to the squad.
I’d expect to be on the bench against Preston
Report abuse
1. Danger Mouse. Considering the reading age of most Blues fans its hardly that supprising now is it. I really, really dislike Blues on so many levels.
Is nobody else slightly suspicous that the pitch was not protected for Saturdays game. thought you were a big club??? I bet if you were playing in the prem league or if the game was on TV they would have made sure it went ahead. hmmm conspiracy.
Excellent signing whether he’s back up or a starter. Hope we can get a tough tackling midfielder and centre back now.
A good signing for me. Cover for wide and forward positions, clearly hungry for it and at £250k not exactly a risk. I’ve never been too sure about Sinclair personally to be honest – and if he does well I expect Chelsea will recall him anyway.
I do not think anyone should question any of MM’s signings. Ok there are one or two that are questionable but overall if we looked at their market value now we are millions in credit.
A decent record for struggling Blackpool, I think this is another quality acquisition. A central midfielder now please and we are nearly there!
dont expect him to be a first teamer, just gives us a bit of strength in depth and all for the price of some cheap undersoil heating!
Have to say, not at all impressed with this one, hardly set the world on fire a Blackpool and missed a sitter against us, total waste of money this one, if Rangers didn’t want to play him then to me that speaks volumes. would have to agree with others though about Scott Sinclair, would like to see us get hold of him.
I’m sure there were a lot of these same comments running through peoples minds when we signed Iwelumo too. But look what happened there… You can’t start determining whether a signing is a bad idea or not until after you have seen that player, player a few games within your own team, not someone elses. Chelsea never play Mancienne yet we know what a star he was for us, so does that mean because Rangers rarely played Gow, he’s gonna be a downfall for us? .. Give him a chance, he hasn’t even pulled on a Wolves shirt yet.
I remember reading simular comments about BIG CHRIS every1 saying 400k what a waste and look what hes done so-far give him a chance would be nice to have a winger slash striker adds something to the bench rather than keigh who cant play either the wings or striker… so let him come and do his thing…

Gow is a top professional proven goalscorer and will enhance greatly our Clubs chances of promotion.
To succeed in this league a large squad of top class performers is needed this is what M.M. is giving us. Open your eyes get behind him!

Well done Wolves. A very sensible signing.
History suggests that at some time in the next 20 league games Kites or Jarvis is likely to be out injured, suspended or otherwise.
Having noticed how loosing a winger(s) has impacted negatively on Wolves results (Reading, Norwich, Swansea, Blackpool) signing another solid winger seems intelligent.
Any other role Gow can/might fill seems like gravy.

34.MARK EDWARDS. Yes seen Bera play around 12 times and although he does play in the SPL at present i dont think its a secret that everyone knows he is an English Premiership class defender who plays regular for Hearts-oftern getting M-O-M awards and probebly would of left sooner if it wernt for takeovers etc at Hearts.Seen Gow play 4 times in Championship of which he was just ok in 2 of them. Will be maybe a good squad/cover player in place of Keogh but the point i was making is that we should be going for players with an eye to next season because lets face it only 4-5 of our present squad will be any good in the Premiership.Top quality players now will settle in just right for promotion and the Premiership next season.

LOL at this whole thread. Wolves sign Gow (who can’t even get in the Rangers side) for £250k, Blues sign Boyd (SPL’s top scorer) for £4m and we sign Sinclair and guess what……..Wolves fans didn’t want him anyway. Gow’s rated and Boyd’s not ha ha. We’re comin’ after you Dingles. Keep Right On!!!

Dream on Pal. Us and Reading will soon be over the horizon and out of your sight.
Wolvesmod :

Zulu……jog on mate, youve been chasing us all season and the gap keeps getting bigger!
Gow has been brought in as cover for Kites and Jarvo, a sensible move at a sensible price.
Boyd has just cost you 4 million!! way overpriced and it smacks of desperation at the blues, the pressure must be really on eh?
I wouldnt concern yourself too much with keeping pace with the Wolves, personally id be worried that Reading have caught you and look a better team.
Food for thought my zulu friend

39) I am really worried about your signings. Do you not think that Ebanks-Blake is better than Boyd? Scott Sinclair would have been useful for us as cover, as he would not dislodge Kites or Jarvis.
Anyway find some money for the pitch and Main stand you tinpot club!

There is chance that Boyd will sign for Newcastle-I am more concerned with the comments from MM re defenders. Not to get onto the subject I for one has a regular attender do not believe that NC can cope at the back–Does the Manager’s comments mean we are not looking for an experienced defender-
I hope we are going to have additons that we can use in the PREM and will help take us there. Come om Mr Morgan use some of that thirty million and make sure we get UP.

ZuluBlue, look for contention in the dressing room with Boyd. According to some sources you are also looking at Lee Bowyer. Remember him fighting with his team mate at Newcastle? That could lead to disaster for you if they both kick off. I must admit I rate Sinclair though.

39. You’re coming after us because you are BEHIND us!
You can’t rate a player by how much you’re noddy manager is prepared to waste on them! Compare value for money between Kightly and Ferdinand, for example! Sinclair has come to you because he’s got more of a chace of a game with you than he has with us. Boyd may well struggle now that a) He’s got a £3.5M price tag, b) his team mates aren’t so good anymore. Gow on the other hand will flourish now he’s in a young, decent team, rather than the “mighty” Blackpool (who beat you at home).

zulu blue. just because you paid 4m for boyd, doesnt mean he is a better player than gow. Yet another ‘Championship’ player at best.If we were signing him at the begining of the season or if we were pushing for the play offs then fair enough, but we’re top of the division,we must have an eye on the Premiership now otherwise i can see Reading and Blues soon overtaking us-we’ve still to play both of them away.We need to show some ambition now with who we sign.I Also read that Blues are on the verge of signing Lee Bowyer-the type of experienced-tough tackeling midfilder that Dave Edwards and Karl Henry arnt!!! ‘Young & Hungry’ on their own wont keep us in the Premiership ‘IF’ we get there,it will be top quality sigings with a bit of experience. And just one more thing, lets get rid of the awefull ‘HoHo Silver Linning’ and bring back the mighty ‘LIQUIDATOR’ for home matches!!!!

And If you buy some other leagues leading scorer, your front 2 might have scored nearly as many as our front 2 have, in this league, you know, the one we’re playing in.

Sorry but i could question 5 or 6 of Micks signings.
Keogh. – showed alot of promise NOT a goalscorer, some love him – some dont
Shackell.- Not had many games
Friend.- One for the future
Hill. – Not really had many games
S. Ward.- Vastly Improved at Left Wing Back
D. Ward.- Agreed
Potter. – Agreed
Gibson. – Loanee – Not given many games?
Elliot. – Gone – Agreed
NB* To give this “balance” What about the successful players that we now have? Surely, the “Cup Is half FULL – Not half empty?”
Not a MM lover, but he seems to have taken on board alot of what was wrong last season and acted on it – fair play to him!
Every manager at any club have made mistakes – some more than others and assembling a squad of players that can gel together and be top of this league (with all the other more fancied teams around) must be viewed as a major step forward for Wolves and a major achievement for MM, Backroom staff and his team
Promotion automatically must be the TOP priority and this would give the club the time and opportunity to assemble the important Premiership experienced players that would give us a very good chance of survival in the top flight
Gow was highly rated when at Falkirk – he chose Glasgow Rangers and was overlooked – We believe that Gow – when given the chances will show people what he is capable of – and so will the likes of Shackell, Vokes etc
Whilst we are in the “Championship” MM will be “tweaking” and “adjusting” – looking at options that will serve our “traditional Wolves style of wing play” and as long as we are moving forward in the right direction, just ask yourself – How many of the other sides in this “heavy duty league” would like to be “Top of the league by 7 pts” right now?
WHEN we gain promotion, not IF; Wolves will just need a sprinkling (5 or 6) Prem experienced players to give this young & hungry set of players the “backbone/ spine” that will be required in the Prem – No excuses from the board – IF we are to stay in the greed league – the club will have to compete in EVERY department

Im sure mick is well aware of what we need to stand a chance of staying up. If Birmingham go up will 3.5 mil boyd be a good premiership player? I dont think so. We’ve spent well getting good players who can get us promoted and we have some players who are premiership class. There should be money, if we go up, to get the players we need to add to the ones we have.

We wouldn’t sell SEB cz ya don;t sell ya Top goalscorer yet they keep a cart horse like Lafferty real glad We didn;t sign him now. Boyd will more then likely end up lik O’Connor how many strikers come from scotland and are over rated and priced Kenny Miller For one,
I really do feel Gow which in my opinion will be used as a winger not a CF (unless injuries and needed up front) could be a McIndoe like signing and be a major factor late in games if he comes on and make Something happen. rather then putting on a player who doesn’t have the ability to turn a game on its head which midfild wise we don’t really have that coming off the bench

Have read and have appreciated a lot of comments in earlier posts. It’s interesting to see there are some quite varing viewpoints – Ok Gow has not been that good for either Glasgow Rangers or even Blackpool – However Mick seems to value the Lad – so give him a chance. We have gone down the route of buying “Named” Players in the Past and these have given nothing in return (I don’t need to name them Wolves supporters know them already) Looking at the past 2 seasons we now have a squad which is pretty good and there were players signed who have given us a team to be proud of. Let see what Mick is going to do with Alan Gow – I agree with an earlier comment that the Lad from Bristol City would Beef Up our Midfield and i,m sure that Mick Jez and our Chairman Mr Morgan will agree with.
Look forward to the Match on Saturday against Preston – when we can see what Mick’s thoughts are Keep the Faith Fans we are still at the TOP

So many good comments it is difficult to critise as until they walk on the pitch all us fans don’t know so we can only speculate. However I find it surprising that we are buying another forward when they are other needs. OK its only 250k but what about all the other costs that go along with it.
When we are talking about Darren Potter as our midfield back-up then this points to mid-field as a priority.
I want to believe that we are buying not only to win promotion but also for our future in the Premier League so how can we be happy that we are buying a 26 year old that couldn’t get a place with Rangers!
I am quite happy that Mancienne has gone back. Great player but he was never a Wolf. We spent a million on Shackell on a long term contract let MM give him a chance to prove he is a Wolf.
The best team we can have is with players that want to play for us not a bunch of players who are in it just for the money.
I look forward to us getting promotion but let us make sure that we are buying players that will work there, not sign long-term deals with players that can’t make it in the big time.
We are a great club – make sure that MM believes it.

Overall, Mick’s signings have been value for money, so I’ll reserve judgement on Mr. Gow until such time that I can form an honest opinion.
That said, my initial reaction was: “we’re pushing hard for auto promotion, so WHY sign a 26 yr old that hasn’t yet made his mark?”. By the time you’ve hit your mid-twenties, you should’ve made it, if you’re going to. Besides, when you’re top of the league, that’s the best time to bring in proven quality, not take gambles. If we do get promoted, is this the kind of player that’ll keep us up, or will he be yet another player we’ll have to unload?
If Mick’s sole aim is to build a promotion-winning team, then maybe he’s got it right. My concern is that, if we do go up, then Wolves will have to rebuild more or less from scratch -with just one or two exceptions.
That wouldn’t apply to Blues or Reading, so is Mick looking far enough ahead? I bloody hope so!

Was Gow too old at 26, anyway?
“Hungry”, maybe…but hardly “young”, is he?
