Fears for market’s future

MARKET 3 DH 4This year could be the last for Wednesbury market according to one town councillor.

Only four stalls are currently in use at the weekend market, and as the cold bites, customer numbers are dwindling. Private consultants brought in by the council have recently completed a six-month investigation on how to turn around the fortunes of all Sandwell’s ailing markets.

Experts, funded by the local authority, were brought in back in May to look at the borough’s markets in a last-ditch attempt to increase shoppers and boost trader numbers.

But Councillor Bill Archer, who says he has shopped at Wednesbury market for most of his life, says time could be up. “On a Saturday there’s only four stalls open, it’s bitterly cold and all of the empty stalls are covered in frost,” he said.

“I think markets have had their day. In this weather people go to the nice warm supermarkets. Morrisons was built next to the market supposedly to encourage more passing trade but it has done the opposite. Wednesbury market is a classic example of all of them around the Black Country.”

He added: “Sandwell Council has spent all this money of consultants but it won’t make a blind bit of difference. They should just speak to the people, face reality and accept that the markets are fading.”

Sandwell’s markets have struggled to cope with competition from big stores and supermarkets despite the recent credit crunch, which has seen markets boom in other areas.

Councillor Bob Badham, cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said it was hoped the consultants’ advice would help to protect the markets which are “historically at the heart of life in the borough’s six towns”.

But Wednesbury market had suffered a decline since moving from The Shambles to Union Street in August last year.

Some incentives, including the introduction of a special reduced fee of £5 for a stall, were successful when trialled.

And given the way we don’t like even to shop in High Street shops now and prefer shopping online or buying everything from ASDA, in ten or fifteen years’ time even High Streets will be a thing of the past, Bill.

British people just don’t like other people enough to want to go out and speak to one another. We want to sit in our houses, click a button so we have even more time to sit on our backsides, get fat, and then expect doctors to help us. Except none of us can be bothered to be doctors, so we have to import them from Sri Lanka, and then we complain about immigration.

What a bunch of loser we are.

I don’t think that the council has helped. We went to the lights switch on before christmas and the market was on then but there was no lighting and they where forced to trade in the dark… even the lights switch-on didn’t help!

I think the majority of traders have given it a wide birth even though it is in an ideal spot between Morrisons and the bottom of the high street….

If you had the choice of a busy Brownhills or Bescot market or a few stalls in Wednesbury which one would you choose?

People have lost interest in this town. Trade was lost years ago when the Market moved from the town square (Clock Tower) to its last resting place which is now the car park for Morrison’s. Traders back then moaned that the stall where too cold so councils decided to blocked the market in. Trade went further down until the brick-a-brack was introduced to pick trade up. It brought the trade in on Tuesdays but the rest of the town was dead. Descent traders have now since moved on to better pitches which brings money in for them. I can’t blame them. The good old Wednesbury town will never be revived to what it use to be. council are more interested in putting their money into a building that is a bottomless pit such as the Public build in West Bromwich. Maybe Wednesbury could have a building like this too if the councils think it brings trade to towns……….We’ll wait and see……..lol.

It’s no good Bill Archer throwing the blame at Morrisons…. Do you see Bilston market suffering a similar fate with Morrisons just across the road? No – because Bilston Market is very popular, and a lucrative one for traders who gave up on Wednesbury long before Morrisons was built there…
There’s far more pedestrians in the market vicinty in Wednesbury now, but with no traders they have no-where to shop!!! It could be revived if there was sufficient incentive, but given the costs required to do so, it’s just going to die out quickly.

Why does it take expensive Consultants to tell the reason why this market has died, I can do it free, megalomaniacs at Sandwell Labour Council are the reason, they have to justify the telephone number salaries they accrue and in the process cause mayhem, buy them all a computer game and stick them in a room out of the way, tell me of anything that they have done that has been a success, The Public???????? Says it all!!!!!!!!

About 4 years back they decided to mess with Bearwood High Street, once a thriving shopping centre its now just an area to post “To Let” signs, instantly shops closed down because of lack of custom, Sandwell Council are obsessed with attacking motorists, they narrowed the road, removed a number of parking bays, increased parking warden activity and everyone stopped shopping there.

They just cant understand the saying “If it aint broke don’t fix it” what qualifies these people to do their jobs on the council, they might be nice people that attract enough votes to give them a cushy number on the council, but that doesn’t mean they have the skill necessary to do a job normally done by people with several years education in that field.

Sandwell Labour Council, leave things alone unless you know what your doing, your ruining peoples lives.

Rebecca, what a jaded view of the world you have, you seem a lovely person to have for a friend or neighbour, what a bundle of joy.

Your comment “BRITISH PEOPLE JUST DON’T LIKE OTHER PEOPLE ENOUGH TO WANT TO GO OUT AND SPEAK TO ONE ANOTHER. WE WANT TO SIT IN OUR HOUSES”, for god’s sake don’t move to Bearwood, our road has a wonderful community spirit, I have had the opportunity in the past to move to another area but I wouldn’t change my neighbours for anything, they are all more like one big family, they are from several different parts of the globe, but without exception they are all wonderful human beings.

Unlike you I have never had a problem with a persons race or nationality, I have had problems with peoples attitude though, ring a bell?????

I agree with Sharon (3). The market died as soon as it was moved from the clock tower. Instead of ‘wasting’ tax payers money on consultants, wouldn’t it be more prudent to reduce shop rates and activeley encourage shop owners to return to the town. It’s too easy to blame the ‘click to buy’ generation, Morrisons or out of town shopping centres.
Some of us enjoy the friendly local markets, meeting and talking to locals, as long it is in a safe and secure environment. With Woolies gone and no decent market, there isn’t much to visit Wednesbury for.

Fred Bloggs, one thing about Bill Archer, he like Mary Docker, are well known for what they do for the community, they are approachable, and actually do the job they were elected to do, they represent the people they were elected by, can you say the same about the Labour Councillors??????

Although there is constant criticism of this council, not one Labour Councillor has got the guts to stand face to face with the people who elected them and answer for their failings.

On two separate occasions, one very recently and in sharp opposition to the views of the council tax payer, this Labour Council unilaterally decided to continue with plan to tax motorists even more, see below.

THE CONTROVERSIAL FEES, WHICH WERE ANNOUNCED IN OCTOBER, HAVE OUTRAGED TRADERS AND RESIDENTS, WHO SAY IT COULD AFFECT BUSINESS.

MORE THAN 6,000 PEOPLE IN BLACKHEATH AND OLDBURY HAVE SIGNED PETITIONS OBJECTING TO THE CHARGES, BUT THEIR PLEAS WERE OVER-RULED.

I would take one of Bill Archer anytime, than a thousand of the other faceless wonders.
