Defender Matt Hill believes Wolves have a “good chance” to progress in the FA Cup this season after being drawn against Middlesbrough – if they can overcome Birmingham.

The fourth round draw paired the winners of Blues and Wolves with a home tie against Boro on the weekend of January 24/25. Wolves first have to negotiate their Championship rivals on a re-arranged date of Tuesday January 13 (7.45pm).

Hill, who was part of a Preston side beaten 2-0 by Boro in the fifth round in February 2006, believes it will be a good test.

He said: “There’s already enough motivation to try to beat Birmingham, but both teams will be looking at the draw thinking there’s a good tie in store for the winners – particularly as it’s at home.

“It’s a game where we’d feel we’d have a good chance, but of course we’ve not even got there yet so no one is looking too far ahead.

“Whichever team gets through, it’s always good to be able to test yourself against the best and a team from the Premier League.

“It’s where everyone is aiming to get to and if we did get through, would give us a chance to take them on and see how we matched up.

“We need to get through the Birmingham game first of all which is one we’re also looking forward to.”

Two second-half goals from Ayegbeni Yakubu killed Preston’s hopes, for Boro who included current Blues players Franck Queudrue and Stuart Parnaby in their line-up that day.

Hill added: “It was a good occasion when we played Middlesbrough with Preston and a close game. We played really well and were on top for the majority of the game but Yakubu was the difference.

“We missed chances and he tucked away a couple of what I’d call half chances and it was game, set and match. The strikers were the difference.”
