Wolves close in on Gow capture
Monday 5th January 2009, 3:18PM GMT.
Glasgow Rangers striker Alan Gow is meeting Wolves as he closes on becoming the club’s first signing of the January transfer window.
Rangers and Wolves have agreed a fee of £250,000 for the 26-year-old, with Blackpool and Leeds still in the hunt.
Wolves, who have identified several possible targets this month, are now meeting with Gow and his representatives.
Rangers boss Walter Smith said: “The clubs have agreed a fee for the player and Alan and his representatives have gone to speak to Wolves.
“As long as they reach agreement, the move will be finalised in due course but they have to talk first.”
Smith believes the move will be ideal for Gow, who made just two appearances for Rangers in 18 months.
He said: “Mick McCarthy has done a terrific job. They’re doing well and look to be the favourites to go up.
“I don’t want to pre-empt anything but it certainly looks as though they’ll get promotion and Alan has an opportunity to join a club on the up. It would be a good move for him.”
Gow has been backed to make a difference to title-chasing Wolves, according to Blackpool captain and former Wolves defender Rob Edwards.
Edwards said: “If Alan goes to Wolves, it will be a great move for both the club and ‘Gowey’ as well. He’s different to anything they’ve got. He’ll definitely bring something different to the table.
“He’s got a really good left foot and he’s a real crowd pleaser with a good football brain and he scores goals. He did very, very well for us – he’s a top footballer and a top lad.
“He did really well up front and he finds those little holes and gets in good areas. He’s one of those players who seems to create space and makes something happen.
“He also created goals as well. He’d be an asset for anyone in this league.”

Just what we need, somebody who can play wide and chip in with a few goals. Need another centre half to keep the pressure on Collins as clearly, Shacknell is out of the picture for some reason or another.

Gow would be great and give us cover and competition for places on the wings, and indeed up front.
Macienne would have been great to keep but hey, move on now and bring in a replacement. We have looked ordinary for a while now and January couldnt come soon enough in my opinion. We are top and in a great position to strengthen now to push on home. Get the money out Steve!! lol

I thought he’d be a good signing, but i’ve changed my mind.
Is this all the ambition we have got? A Blackpool and Rangers reject?

Whats this rubbish about Shackell being out the picture! He hasnt played because there had been 3 players ahead of him. With only two places available two can play and one on the bench! Meaning Shackell wouldnt make the bench! SIMPLE
I bet we see him on the bench for next few games!

Looks like Mick is addressing all of our concerns. Roll on May!!!

Agree Bullseye-He had a good game against us holding and playing the ball off-On a pitch that by Saturdays standards at Brum should not have been played-Another Story.
Still need an experienced defender-& wonder who will be transferred from us–
happy New Year all–KEEP THE FAITH-Crazey Dave

Merridale Wolf, Shacknell has not been given a run in the team since we signed him in August. When MM wanted to change it around at the back he signs Mancienne on loan. When you consider the money spent on him, doesn’t it make you wonder why? Same thing happened with Darren Ward! I know theres competition for places but he hasn’t had a sniff.

here we go again why is it taking so long to sign him he,s been a target for a long time should have been signed as soon as the transfer window opened the sooner we get these players in the longer they have to gel into the team so cmon wolves pull your finger out and get the players in nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww,WE ARE WOLVES

Looked good against us last game – though he does need to get his barnet sorted – candidate for the worst hairdo in the league I reckon!! ;-)

Totally agree rich5Wolves.
We have been ordinary since the end of the first unbeaten run and we need a player who is clever and can unlock blanket defences.
From what I’ve seen of Gow, he is that type of player and if…and I say “if”….any complacency is the reason for not maintaining our early season form, Gow’s arrival should be a timely prod for Messrs SEB, Kightly, Big Chris and Keogh.
I’m not a “doom and gloom” merchant and we have done really well this season but we have moved from being like the Albion of last year to the Birmingham of this …and I know which I prefer!

If Mick was addressing our concerns he would get rid of Ward and Collins.
If we get Gow, this could mean MM will try to use Keogh as a makeweight for another deal.
Bob Wolf you’re a fool.
Agreed Ward is terrible (hence the reason he’s out on loan) but Collins has done ok.
Get off Mick’s back and support the boys.
I imagine you’ll be the first one praising Mick in May when we get promoted.
11 agree but you should have included Keogh
These are not the type of players to have

Ward and collins done nothing wrong this season, Infact Steven ward has been brilliant, most improved player id say. I have no concerns with jan mick knows who we need and it prob will be someone out of nowhere. look who he brought last jan ebanks and edwards and the jan before kightly ?
So spend away mick

13 – Ward out on loan? Did we miss something???

Wordsley Wolf – Bob Wolf ia actually referring to, amazingly, beyong belief – Stephen Ward, not Darren. The Stephen Ward that apart from Sheff Utd at home has been superb all season.
And if / when we go up, Bob will still call for Mick to go. He’s just that sort of guy. We keep him around the place as he brightens the corners with his amusing spin on things……

16 – Darren Ward

Bob is not a wolf and neither is taggy – they are from sandwell. Ignore them and they will go back to baggieland to discuss their “diassapointing progress” with their mates.

As long as we keep all our star players, I will be happy whoever signs

I think Shacknell will get his chance. If a player like Mancienne is available you must look at it. If Collins hadnt been playing well then Shacknell would of had his chance. I just think its a bit asumptions to say he isnt in favour. He just has “better” or in form players ahead of him.
I’m not saying he’s any worse or better than, say, Andy Keogh.
OH DEAR.. JUST WHEN I THOUGHT HE COULD BE GOOD FOR US.
We still need some more experience at the back & in mid field. the sign them young policy has done well for us, but now I think it is time for a couple of older heads. We are so close to going up, we just need some more experience to help when the going gets tough. As the last few games has shown !

Some of you on here are playing the same cd all the time (BobWolf etc take note!), don’t you have another one to play?
We all had a moan about the team and some of the players last season BUT this season the jigsaw has had the missing pieces put in place, we are top of the division and the rest are playing catch up, so who do you want Wolves to sign – Ronaldo, Torres, Fabregas, Terry…?
McCarthy is obviously looking to strengthen the squad and is bringing in players who offer us different options. Collins and Ward may not be everyones favourites but they doing a good job so far!
If you cannot get behind the team now without having a moan then basically you will never be pleased!
I suggest you keep your opinions to yourselves until you can post something more positive or failing that, don’t bother posting at all!
Iff he isnt any better than Keogh, leave him where he is.

I recon he will be a cost effective signing. I also think we need to splash a bit of cash to make sure of promotion. I would like Marvin Elliot mostly and I think Scott Sinclair on loan would be ideal. I also think Surman would be good and possibly a quality CB and we’ll be set. That may mean £5m-£6m spent but I think that should almost guarantee us promotion which is worth A LOT MORE THAN THAT! I MICK (and co.)WE TRUST

24 – Well said!
I honestly can’t believe some of the moaning muppets that comment on here! Some of them are obviously not Wolves fans… were top of the league!!!
Oh and as for Shackell – comment 21 hit it on the head, I don’t believe he’s out of favour – their were just better options. The same as for Vokes!
Oh and I agree we should be getting more cover in… but the lads haven’t done badly so far. To hear some of you guys it sounds like this is the worst team ever! Relax and believe in Mick. He’ll bring in cover…

Mick must know something everyone else doesnt. 250K for a 26 year old striker? This seems incredibly cheap. He has good stats from Blackpool but Rangers seem keen to offload him quickly.
Lets hope he works out.
Charlie.

No 5. You’ll have to buy me a babycham and a bag of scratchings first. I’m not that easy.

No 3; I suggest you shouldn’t make your conclusions based on cost alone. I seem to remember signing a young bloke from Greys Athletic for only 25k a few transfer windows ago and he’s done quite well hasn’t he?

wolvesmod – I bet you were one of the muppets who said is this all our ambition when we signed Iwelumo. Thank God people like you arn’t managers, dampening a players ability and he hasn’t even pulled on a Wolves shirt. It is possible for a team to play to a players strengths……….some of you people arn’t Wolves fans. You can’t be……… Go back to the Albion site……….

2 at the back..! 2 at the back 2..! at the back… !
Also, i’ve been echoing the above sentiment for a while we’ve not had a great performance in a while… new blood and new inspiration.
looking fwd to Vokes getting a full game. Exciting player and certainly not complacent.
COME ON YOU WOLVES !!

It seems that we never learn anything from past experiences, the squad we have now is good enough to take us to the Promised Land.Where we went wrong with Dave Jones in charge, and in a similar position as now,is that we did not get any Premiership Players in while we were at the top.Anybody who has played or managed in the game knows that it is far easier to get in the top players when you are top of the league,[no one will look at the boggies now].I feel we will once again go for the cheap options and sign players who are only as good as what we already have.Come on McCarthy,Morgan and Moxey and act BIG.Think of life in the PREM!!!

Alan Gow very highly rated when he went to Rangers just got a little lost as so many do there!Middle of the park not center back is where we need somebody ,someone to help KH with all the dirty work.Would like to see Shackell play a few times just to make my own mind up.
