Thief ruins night for paralysed teenager
Friday 2nd January 2009, 11:29AM GMT.
A paralysed teenager had his New Year ruined by a pickpocket who stole his wallet and mobile phone as he partied with friends at a bar.
It was the first time that Ryan Cockbill, aged 18, from Great Barr, had been out on a night out with friends since his accident two years ago.
Ryan, formerly of Walsall Wood, was paralysed from the chest down after diving into an inflatable swimming pool in a back garden. The accident left him with a broken neck and he has to use a wheelchair.
He spent eight months in a spinal injuries hospital before returning home. But he needs regular trips to hospital and his home has been specially adapted to cope with his needs.
On New Year’s Eve he headed into Walsall with six friends to enjoy what should have been a memorable night. But while at the Revolution bar in Bridge Street he discovered his wallet, containing £50, and Apple iPhone had been taken from his jumper pocket shortly after midnight. His mother Karen appealed for information about the theft. She said: “It really is despicable what this person has done.
“Ryan is a vulnerable young man and to target him in this way just breaks my heart. He has been through so much.
“Ryan was enjoying his first night out with his friends since his accident two years ago and this happened. It ruined his New Year and has put a massive dampener on what should have been a memorable night for him.”
She said a mobile phone was vital for Ryan in case he needed medical assistance at any time.
The Ryan Cockbill Trust was set up to raise funds for Ryan to allow him to live comfortably at home. Anyone who wants to help can call Mrs Cockbill on 07989 612782.
